Why would Reshiram submit to him…? They had done nothing but fight over the truth when they first met and when they fought with Zekrom and him. They were at war with one another, but yet it was willingly bring him along? Submitting to him?

Natural couldn’t understand. They were barely friends, and Natural didn’t understand it’s heart and–

There was a purposeful jolt, one that jostled Natural into slipping and wrapping his arms firmly into Reshiram’s fur. A silent reminder that it heard him, it heard them both and it agreed with Rayquaza. It chose to stay with him, to guide him on his journey for the truth… Even if he wasn’t the hero the legends spoke of.

❝Thank you, Reshiram.❞ Natural murmured into it’s fur, then took a moment to brace himself and lift his head back into the air.

Surely they were close now, one glance ahead and he could see bright lights and land.

❝If I am ever able to fly for myself, I will. I want to experience this sensation.❞ He promised.

Of course Reshiram agreed with Rayquaza, because Rayquaza was correct. While Rayquaza displayed arrogance on-level of believing itself to be a god, that was because of its sheer power -- that didn’t necessarily mean that it blinded itself to reality around it. It would not humble its fellow world-shapers, either; if they believed that a human was worth being around, then that was their choice, and he would not let the human believe for one second that such a choice was made because the human pushed them into submission. Ridiculous notion.

『You may be able to request an audience with the Origin if that is what you wish to accomplish,』 Mew being ‘the Origin’, as it were, since it was the very first besides Lord Arceus Itself. 『If it so chooses, it can allow you to fly.』 Rayquaza did not dare recommend that the human go to Lord Arceus. Lord Arceus did not have time for humans.

And there it was. Laverre City, and therefore, the Factory that was attached to the back of it. Rayquaza hovered over it, observing the Fairy-type Gym there, as well.

『This is the place.』

Flying is freedom.

So was Natural free now…? Had he been confined his whole life and now he was able to touch the skies? No. This wasn’t freedom, this was being lost. A being like him couldn’t have freedom, he’d never truly experienced the suffering of being trapped like many Pokémon had.

❝I’ve never thought about it.❞ He answered honestly, because what reason did Natural have to imagine himself with wings? It wasn’t important. But now the question was presented to him and he… Thought about it.

About himself.

How selfish. How… Human. Ugh.

❝I suppose I would… If I had wings then Reshiram wouldn’t need to guide me. I could fly away by myself.❞ His eyes flickered down to the white fur he was clutching to so firmly.  ❝After all, it’s unfair that it’s kept inside the very thing I question.❞

Rayquaza could tell right away from that kind of response the kind of person this human was -- someone who likely never thought for himself. Not thought for himself, or about himself, in general. And if he did think about himself, it was self-depreciation.

No wonder Reshiram saw this one as someone in dire need of help.

『Your Bird of Truth is bringing you along willingly. You really think that a legend such as it would simply submit to you because it felt it had to? That is arrogant thinking.』 Rayquaza snorted with derision, but it wasn’t with the kind that it regarded the human with before. Rather, the dragon-type was a ‘tough love’ kind of Pokémon; it didn’t humor self-pity. 『No capsule could hold one of us unless we allowed it to. The Ozone God does not understand why it stoops itself to that level, but the fact of the matter is that it has, by its choice.』

Kalos was getting closer, and Rayquaza could see it. Anistar City’s sundial shone brilliantly in the sunlight. 『The sensation of flying yourself is different from the sensation of using someone else to fly. That is what Rayquaza stresses to you. You have much to learn, that is clear.』

It was a fascinating creature, how it could even fly was beyond Natural. It possessed no wings, no jets, nothing, but yet it sailed through the sky faster than anything he’d ever seen. Of course, it wasn’t as if his friend was close behind, but he supposed that was why Reshiram had, albeit mockingly, referred to Rayquaza as the ‘Ozone God’.

Although it’s words caught Natural’s thoughts more, as always, Pokémon always had a way of speaking to him and capturing his attention. Human’s spoke a lot of nonsense, but Pokémon only spoke truths…

…

❝I was stuck underground for so long, but I don’t know if it’s flying that is really what I desired.❞ He explained, his fingers curled into Reshiram’s fur. ❝However, this feeling… Flying freely, is similar to what I desired. Perhaps it’s the free part.❞

He’d watched that toy plane in room spin on the ceiling for hours and hours, days and days, for years even, but never did he want to touch the sky. He wished for the Pokémon that were captured to be free once more to touch the sky.

But it was… nice. It was like being on top of the ferriswheel. So high up, so exhilarating. Did Reshiram feel it too? Did it feel free?

Rayquaza heard the human’s tale and let out a huff -- did humans really put other humans underground like that? This human didn’t look that old. Probably freshly an adult, at that. How could he have been underground ‘for so long’? Something told Rayquaza that it wasn’t voluntary.

Not that it cared, of course. The personal affairs of a human remained a very far-off concern for the gigantic dragon-type.

It continued to fly forward as it responded, 『It is freedom. Flying is freedom.』 That’s how Rayquaza generally experienced it to be, anyway. For Rayquaza, it was the time that it enjoyed the most.

They watched as the world below them drifted by; Rayquaza was good at keeping its attention focused and split between the world below and the air that it flew. As a result, it kept a close eye on the landmarks below them, and that allowed it to track the fact that they had officially left the humid climate of Hoenn and were making their way over to Unova. It was quite some distance away from them and would take flying over another region, but it didn’t bother Rayquaza.

『Were it that you had wings, would you use them, human?』

Well, that was all Natural had to offer, berries and the clothes on his back. Everything else had surely crumbled with his castle, or was buried beneath rubble and dirt. Where it belonged, honestly.

Nothing had ever truly been his.

But before Natural could think further on the painful pangs in his heart, he was distracted by the take off of the ‘Ozone God’. Stretched out and speared up into the sky, causing the clouds to part for it. What a sight to behold, one that Natural watched with wide eyes briefly before he was knocked slightly by Reshiram’s own take off.

His ‘friend’ spread its wings and lifted off into the skies after Rayquaza, jostling Natural slightly on its back but he soon got a firm hold on the drag to keep him securely on its back as they soared through the clouds after Rayquaza.

He was so undeserving of such a wondrous moment of sailing through the skies, chasing a legendary dragon.

Rayquaza soared through the wind as it whipped through its scales, a jet stream of air that felt akin to that of a storm around it. For Rayquaza, flying was exhilarating -- it breathed life into it, after days of lying around doing nothing as it slept to regain its energy. With the jet stream of the dragon behind it on top of that, it intensified that feeling.

It wasn’t often that Rayquaza got to fly with someone else, after all.

It kept a slow enough pace that Reshiram caught up by its side, with Rayquaza being long enough that although its head remained ahead of Reshiram, the rest of it still trailed enough behind. Its arms were tucked against its chest as it barreled through the sky.

『You humans always sought out a method to fly because you are aware of just how incredible it is. Even those grounded have an instinct for it,』 boomed the Ozone God, in a rather good mood due to the fact that it was flying now and not having to stare at the human to talk.

Ordinarily a conveyer of the o-zone, Rayquaza made a pit stop on the ground in a field, mainly because it wanted to bask in the sunlight, which served to be extra strong that day. It didn’t realize that it had company in said sunlight -- in the form of a Delcatty and Skitty, lingering not too far from where it decided to perch.

Its eyes were half-closed as it stared out in the distance. It’s a little funny, seeing the grand dragon sprawled out like that. Dare they take this rare opportunity to approach it, while it was not taking seat within Sky Pillar?

Kalos.

…

… Nope. Natural had no idea where that was. He could pin point it on a map, toss a dart and hit it’s exact location, but knowing it’s location on a map and actually navigating his way there were two different things, as he’d already discovered during his travels with Reshiram. His knowledge amounted to nothing if he failed at applying it to practical situations, it seemed.

He’d already began to hoist himself up onto Reshiram’s back when that strange request was heard, prompting a blink from Natural.

The ‘Ozone God’ certainly had a unique sense of humour.

❝Guidance is appreciated,❞ Natural smiled once he was settled comfortably on Reshiram’s back. ❝I can offer you berries in return. They are all I have.❞

Reshiram’s response was snort, it was not in favour of handing either the human’s blood or their berry collection over, but if one had to be exchanged then it supposed berries were the better option.

Natural’s fingers combed through it’s fur briefly, drawing it’s attention from the Ozone God as he asked, ❝will it be too far for you, friend?❞

Hoenn had been quite the distance from Unova, but Reshiram was more than capable. Silly human. ‘I am capable of the journey.’ It huffed, then stretched out it’s wings to prepare for take off. ‘Lead the way, mighty ‘Ozone God.’’

Berries? Rayquaza let out a snort. 『Rayquaza has little need for berries.』 It was a joke, anyway. Rayquaza didn’t need anything in return -- it was self-serving and had plenty as it was. It didn’t need hand-me-outs.

Other than the human recognizing how honored he was to receive its assistance, of course.

With that, it uncoiled again, paying little mind to Reshiram’s derision as it suddenly shot up into the sky, a spectacle to be seen as the wind around it kicked into high gear and the clouds themselves appeared to part for its spectacle. The sheen of its scales stood out within the pale sunlight that reflected along its back, edging its sides in shadows and making it all the more imposing to those beneath it, along with the shadow its body itself cast.

It did not wait, not feeling it needed to for a fellow dragon-type as it started for Kalos.

Manufacturers? For all his knowledge, Natural hadn’t even considered that. The origins of the Pokéballs, surely those who placed them together would know how they worked and if they were right for Pokémon.

How foolish of him to not think of such a thing. Then again… He was always making foolish mistakes, it seemed.

❝Do you know where they are made?❞ Natural asked, already turning as if he was ready to hop up on Reshiram’s back once more. If it was there that he would discover the truth then he had to leave urgently.

 Whilst Natural didn’t pay much attention to the glare Rayquaza had given them, Reshiram did. It’s body lowered enough for the human to climb back up upon him if he desired, but it’s eyes fixed on the so called ‘Ozone God.’ It wouldn’t make a sound though, just address the other with a silent nod of appreciation.

It truly was grateful for the guidance provided. 

That silent nod was all Rayquaza needed for now. An acknowledgment of the time that it took for this human. Insignificant in himself, but... He was part of a greater whole, and the Ozone God would be remiss if it did not acknowledge it.

It uncoiled, but this time not to lean toward the human. It instead faced up toward the sky. 『There is a facility within Kalos... Your Laverre City,』 it grunted. 『If you need the Ozone God’s guidance, Rayquaza will take you and the Bird of Truth there.』 It wasn’t as if it would be a hard reach, anyway, and Rayquaza needed its daily fly, which it hadn’t engaged in for the time being. If they were going to fly anyway, might as well come along.

Rayquaza remembered the Factory’s location, so it wouldn’t take much for it to lead Reshiram and the human there.

Rayquaza couldn’t help but add, 『In exchange, you must give Rayquaza the blood of a virgin, as the Ozone God is hungry and has not had human flesh in so long...』 And was that... A toothy grin on the dragon-type’s face? 『That is only a jest, human.』

To make that choice. They could choose to be with humans.

If that was the case then perhaps Natural could make his own dream come true… Maybe. He wasn’t like that trainer. He lacked so much. He didn’t fit into his own equation.

❝I want to live in a world where Pokémon choose, and Pokéballs are unnecessary.❞ Natural explained, his head lowered and voice softer and slower, something unusual for him.

Everything was unusual to him now though.

❝I agree, separation is… Bad.❞ It was a struggle for him to spit that word out, as if he was lying but the truth had stared him directly in the face multiple times. How could he still find it difficult? How could he still not understand?

Maybe he really was without a heart. 

Not even one that understood Pokémon.

❝… You said you come from a time before Pokéballs. Do you think my dream is achievable? Perhaps not by me, but by another who fits evenly into the equation?❞

Rayquaza noticed the hesitation in the human’s response, and the way that he seemed to struggle with it. It was as if he didn’t really agree.

Humans were interesting creatures -- filled with contradictions. No wonder Reshiram saw fit to help this one.

『Rayquaza is not a human. Loath as the Ozone God is to admit it, even Rayquaza does not know everything. Rayquaza does not know how Pokéballs work.』 It grunted. 『So, if you really feel you must oppose the capsules, it would benefit you to understand how they work. You can speak to Pokémon, no? Speak to the ones who are bound to Pokéballs, and speak to the manufacturers. You should not oppose something you do not understand the mechanisms behind -- that was Team Magma and Aqua’s respective mistakes, as they did not understand purpose behind the sea or the land. But everything has its balance... Even human-made things. What purpose did humans have behind their creation?』

Not that Rayquaza favored Pokéballs. Honestly, it believed the world could benefit without them, too. But Reshiram was there and it knew the Bird of Truth would not approve of the Ozone God giving opinion pieces to a human who sought guidance. He glared at the bird itself, to let it very well know that its words are for their sake.

『But should you continue to decide they are unnecessary... A world without them did exist, and partnerships existed before them, as well. But if such a thing would come to pass again, humans do not appear to enjoy exchanging convenience for morality unless there is something else in exchange. If you expect to influence a generation by moral postulation alone, forget it. It will not work. Some may consider otherwise, but you want change on a grand scale. And Lord Arceus gave each and every human free will.』

Humans evolved from Pokémon…? Perhaps that explained why he could understand them. Not that Natural was particularly interested in pursuing the origins of his strange ability. He had accept that he was wrong, that he lacked a human heart.

By understanding the world, humans and Pokémon, perhaps he would gain a human heart.

Maybe.

❝Were they happy? To fight in wars for humans. Was it a good thing? If a war was to happen again, would Pokémon do the same?❞ Natural paused briefly, shaking his head after a moment of thought. It was a valid question, wasn’t it? Even if he was sure his past actions were wrong.  ❝Do you believe Pokémon would be better off with or without humans? Do you think it would be fair to separate them?❞

『Conflict is a natural part of life,』 Rayquaza rumbled. 『Whether or not it made them happy, fighting was an inevitability for a Pokémon. Still, humans did not always have good reasons for starting wars... In fact, a majority of the time they were simply artificially constructed conflicts. Pokémon knew this, intuitively.』

It made this human a strange one, to ask if Pokémon were happy to fight in wars. What a strange creature this human was in general. It made Rayquaza curious.

『They were not happy with wars. No one was. But Pokémon were happy to be able to do something for the humans that served them.』 Rayquaza’s eyes narrowed. 『It is likely that Pokémon will continue to participate in wars as long as humans continue to have them.』

As for the next questions... 『There is little purpose in separating them. Humans and Pokémon have become tightly ingrained in each other, and that is due to intentional invention of humans themselves. Pokémon can learn to survive without them, but it will take the planet a long time to heal should they suddenly disappear. As for what the Ozone God thinks... Well, a partner bond with a human is something that the Ozone God would never stoop to; My purpose, and indeed all Greater Pokémon’s purpose, is to serve the planet, and we cannot do that if we allow ourselves to become paired with someone, much less someone unworthy of said pair bond. Still, Greater Pokémon may choose to allow these bonds regardless, as have been the case with Latias and Latios, and others still may see it as a benefit.

『For lesser Pokémon, such bonds have an undeniable benefit of allowing them to live longer, and explore aspects of life that they could not while fighting for a meal in the wild,』it seemed to be a begrudging admittance on Rayquaza’s part, given the way it grumbled afterward. 『It matters not what might have happened if humans never came to be. They exist now, and Pokémon have formed relationships with them. To separate them now would result in tragedy that may not even pay off for anything in the end. The Ozone God works with the tangible. If Pokémon wish to be with humans, Lord Arceus gave them the ability to make that choice.』

Natural would thank Rashiram, who still seemed to remain close to his side despite how Rayquaza had receded back to it’s coils. So his fingers idly brushed Reshiram’s feathers, eyes remained focused on Rayquaza. He couldn’t allow himself to waver again before the creature.

He had to be worthy.

❝I know, I intend to be.❞ Natural responded with a nod of his head. After all, it wasn’t as if he had anywhere to return to. He would learn where he belonged the longer he travelled. He would learn everything.

So indeed, he had many questions for the so called ‘Ozone God’.

❝How long have humans and Pokémon been together? Have they always benefited from each other or was there ever a time when separation was necessary?❞

Rayquaza was settled where it was perched, awaiting the human’s question -- and it certainly came. It was an interesting question to ask, to be sure.

『Pokémon have lived long before humans ever came to be in the world. Humans evolved from Pokémon millennia ago. Even when they came into being, there existed no such thing as ‘trainers’ for a long time. Humans found that, while they possessed little physical strength, they carried a kind of intuitiveness that many Pokémon are incapable of on their own. Pokémon saw benefit in allowing this kind of relationship, and as a result humans and Pokémon came to form partnerships. These were not friendships; they acted as you humans would call contracts. As humans learned they could provide facilities for Pokémon to stay in and, as they did so, Pokémon would agree to stay with them, the actual partnerships that you may know today came to form as they became more permanent fixtures.』

The beast grumbled, 『Humans tell tales of how Pokémon and humans have always been close, but in reality it has been all about worthiness and dominance from the very beginning. Humans use Pokémon in order to dominate others. Pokémon like this, naturally, because we have always subscribed to survival of the fittest; and Pokémon do not have to fight to survive when a human takes care of all their needs. As a result, they can progress and dominate with a safety net behind them.

『The worst example of humans’ usage of Pokémon comes from the wars that have occurred over millennia. Pokémon would participate in these wars between humans not due to personal beliefs, but because they find themselves bonded to humans and humans provide for them, so they offer their loyalty in return.』

‘You are the Ozone God. You have been around long enough to witness the evolution of humans, why would I not bring a human who wishes to learn the truth of human and Pokémon interaction to you?’ Reshiram no longer roared, didn’t spread it’s wings to address Rayquaza. There was no need for any fighting, but it wouldn’t be stroking the so called ‘god’s ego any time soon either.

‘Is this not the best place to bring him? Where land and sea share such an intimate bond?’ It levied it’s questions, then ducked it’s head closer to Natural’s side, especially as it witnessed Rayquaza uncoil.

Natural wasn’t afraid. Never in his life had he been afraid of Pokémon, humans maybe, but Pokémon? No. No matter their size or whether or not they attacked him.

… But perhaps, just for a moment, as he stared their creature in the eye and took in it’s words, his heart wavered.

❝… That’s what I search for, the truth to believe in. What I believed in and fought for before was a lie. That’s why I’m here, I want to see what the world is really like for myself.❞  He replied, digging up that confidence he’d once had in his terrible ideals.

❝I will become a worthy friend. Perhaps that’s my dream… To be worthy of friends.❞ After all, it was he who needed to be worthy. Oh, how the tables had turned from the days he sought out Reshiram’s power, believing it to be worthy of *him* and his *ideals.*

Rayquaza seemed to sit on the information that Reshiram presented. So, it would come to Rayquaza because it oversaw from the ozone the kind of interaction that occurred between human and Pokémon? In Rayquaza’s eyes, there was very little difference between them when it came down to it. All of them were helpless against the onslaught of attackers that the Earth would receive -- and so, Rayquaza would defend it, and them, to its last breath.

Not that it would ever say as much, of course.

The human then went on to talk about what he believed and fought for being a lie, and Rayquaza let out a snort. 『There are lies that everyone tells themselves all the time,』 Rayquaza intoned. 『Also, the world is vast. You will not be able to understand its entirety by exploring one portion of it, no matter what the portion. You will be on this quest for a long time.』 Rayquaza rested its head on its coils, seemingly no longer having its hackles raised. The human can thank Reshiram for that. 『You may ask the Ozone God questions. You are here, and the Ozone God is not busy. Many, many years has Rayquaza roamed the skies, and many, many years has Rayquaza visited different regions. It knows all.』

The arrogance was quieter than what it displayed earlier.

❝I haven’t been in Hoenn for long…❞ Natural’s words fell on death ears however, and he lacked the same drive he did a year previously to struggle with a legendary dragon and force it to befriend him. He hoped he wasn’t that same kind of person anymore, that his travels had slowly begun to shine the light on him.

…

Could he even consider Reshiram his friend? Was it happy to be at his side, the same way he had observed other Pokémon being happy at their trainers side? Could he ever experience a bond like that?

From behind him, Natural heard the roar of Reshiram as it stretched out it wings in order to address the Pokémon before them. It was unusual to Natural, his ‘friend’ was normally so quiet, letting Natural do the talking for the both of them. Was that really fair though? He could he really speak on behalf of Reshiram?

He wasn’t the supposed hero who was bonded with him after all.

‘I do not need salvation. This human is no leader of mine, I am guiding him to the truth that he searches for. Perhaps it’s you who also needs to be shown the truth, ‘‘Ozone God’’.’ Reshiram roared, then proceeded to settle it’s wings back into it’s feathers. It saw no more reason to engage in petty conversation with a creature so egotistical. It wouldn’t reveal any worldly truths to it’s human, after all.

Falls on deaf ears? No, Rayquaza heard what the human said -- it just didn’t care. Its focus fell instead on Reshiram, who responded directly to it, about how it didn’t need salvation, the human was no leader to it, and it was guiding him to the truth. Fighting words especially existed in the air-quotes that Rayquaza picked up on around its (well-earned) title.

『You believe this human genuinely cares about the truth?』 Rayquaza snorted. 『He will dedicate himself to self-pity before he legitimately self-reflects. If you are guiding him to the truth, why did you take him to me?』 Rayquaza still refused to believe that the both of them were just ‘wandering’; there’s no wandering into Sky Pillar, given that it was in the middle of the ocean and it was huge and daunting. After all, when the girl sought out its help, that was no accident. 『And you,』 it turns its attention back to the human, 『if that is truly your purpose, then you should remain with it with conviction. If just a few words from me, how ever great they are coming from the Ozone God, are enough to shake your resolve in what you believe in... Well, how strongly did you believe in it to begin with?』

Rayquaza leaned in closer to the human, uncoiling from where it was originally lying down so it could lower its head closer to him, eyes narrowing. 『If the Bird of Truth chose you as a vessel, act like it. The Ozone God will not have My brethren choose to spend time with a spineless coward. If the Bird of Truth must dedicate its time to you, then make yourself worthy of it. Of course, you will never be fully worthy... But you can at least try instead of sniveling like a newborn.』

Was... Rayquaza trying to encourage N?

Finding the Pokémon that attempted to chase him and Reshiram out of the skies in that region wasn’t in Natural’s formula, but upon reaching the top of the rugged pillar he had found, there it was. Yelling at him.

Natural wasn’t intimidated, he’d met so many Pokémon who yelled and screamed at him, who attacked him and recoiled in fear. That was all the Pokémon his father brought to him, all those that had been abused and hated or feared humans.

It was the word ‘pets’ that had his heart shake.

❝Battles are far much more than forcing ‘pets’ to do the fighting for you.❞ Natural had learned that time after time.  ❝I’m not here to fight you, nor is Reshiram. We are just travelling… Finding you up here wasn’t in my formula.❞

『... You must think me naive if you believe that the Ozone God will buy such a pitiful explanation! The Sky Pillar is my domain, and you would know this if you spent any amount of time within Hoenn!』

To Rayquaza, its name was known far and wide no matter the region, but especially within Hoenn, where it most often reached the earth. For this human to claim that he did not believe he would run into Rayquaza here... It was not only incredibly bold, but incredibly daft, as well.

『For the Bird of Truth, it must be incredibly adept at lying to itself if it believes that a human will bring it salvation! How the mighty have fallen... The Ozone God wishes to hear directly from the Bird of Truth! Why do you demean yourself your time with this human, who honestly believes that we need humans’ leadership when we have existed long before they roamed the planet?』

『Like all humans, you ogle uselessly when presented with the Ozone God in front of you.』 Rayquaza lets out a snort of derision, its eyes narrowed on the very, very small human presented in front of it. 『Well? Your business, state it. Unless you believe yourself so arrogant that you’re allowed to waste the Ozone God’s precious time? At the very least if you mean to capture my attention, you should battle me.
