my claim to tumblr fame: posting lemon stealing whores. more on the origin and death of lemon stealing whores below!
in 2011 or possibly early 2012, when we were in college together my friend @/inglouriousmusic showed me the intro to lemon stealing whores. sometime in 2013, it came up in a discussion with my friend @/pairofsmittens (who can vouch), and they'd never seen it. back then, if you embedded a video to tumblr, it got around the age-gating on videos. no, i don't know why i thought it was sfw, i guess i didn't realize that the bodysuit was sheer, and i have literally never considered "fuck" to be particularly inappropriate. oops! i think i actually posted it with the tag "please don't let this be the thing that makes me tumblr famous"
it immediately, and i mean very immediately, broke containment and spun out of control. i have never had more than like 200 followers so it was very surprising to me. not long after i had posted it, i decided to delete 90% of all my posts on my main blog and start using a sideblog as my main because my main blog was full of a lot of painful memories at the time relating to an ex and a work stalker. i think my url was weepingkind when i made the post, but between that blog and my sideblog, i also went through violetbowdelaire, lippytappy2spooky, thanksjupiter, and some others i just cannot remember at this point—scary insight into my fandoms / aesthetics, i know. lmao. but i left lemon stealing whores up, because at first it was kind of fun to be tumblr famous! not that anything came of it, no one recognized me, no anons came, etc., it was just that one post. honestly, that's for the best.
the problem came from how posts appeared in the dash. in 2013 and before, notes appeared in your dashboard right alongside posts, so when a post popped off, it made the dashboard completely unusable. i tried missing e (for the younger folks, missing e was sort of the precursor to xkit) and all sorts of things to block notes on it, but inevitably every time i would switch browsers or computers it would become an issue again, and i was at a sort of tumultuous period in my life where those things weren't stable, so i think around the time it had hit 50k notes or something i decided to delete the post entirely. i remember i was in a call with @/ptyler when i was lamenting to him about the notes in the dash and he told me about a similar experience and how annoying it was and encouraged me to not feel guilty for just deleting it, so i did!
unfortunately, post editing was still a thing back then, so a few blogs tried to claim credit for that post after that 🙃 one of my only two regrets in deleting the post, not that i did anything cool, all i did was post a video from youtube, right, lmao, so who cares. that felt like the end of it.
but then some time in 2023 or 2024 (it was on discord and discord's search sucks, i can't find it now) one of my friends (@/blackcvrds i think?) asked "sev what the fuck happened to lemon stealing whores" or something similar to that and i had NO idea what they meant, i was curious so i went to check. i have a version saved in my drafts that still shows the correct blog source and sure enough. the video is totally broken and errors out after a second, and if you reblog it, it will force anyone's dash it appears on down to that post. i don't know what happened. my only guess is that because the post is now so old, and also deleted, that the video is just... gone from tumblr's data...? it's either that or they nuked it. the world may never know.
