something i love about mary is how much she likes to claim she’s part of the old ways, and immovable… but then embraces things that would be forward thinking as if what do you mean? that’s just logic and makes sense. do it that way. while she’s always wary of change because not all change is good change, she embraces it when its something for the better — even if it’s not her tastes exactly. yet, she seems so unaware that she’s like this. she almost seems convinced to believe the way others paint her.

never forget how absolutely horny mary and matthew are for each other. like the one time they didn’t bang, was only because it was doctor enforced and matthew was so shook to hear those words come from her. mary, the woman who joked about sex with her mother and sisters before she was even at the alter and caused her husband to tell her father that sex with her was eye opening, for once not dtf ?  he looked like she was an impostor… and you can see in their body language and dialogue that they are constantly wanting each other. iconique.

i think a lot of people think mary acts as she does in earlier seasons because “she’s just a bitch” ( i see similar unfair claims about edith too ) — but the crawley sisters are all extremely intelligent women who are very capable… and due to their society, are severely limited in both their self control over their lives and how they can spend their time. she’s frustrated, bored and has no meaningful way to spend her time and use her mind. while she is naturally stubborn and guarded, it’s GREATLY affected by this and it’s why she and edith occupy their time being so catty and vicious to one another. it’s also why once she finds something self-fulfilling so much of her demeanor changes. she’s still mary, but she’s her best self. she can have a somewhat good relationship with edith. i’m sorry but mary’s arc makes me emotional.
