This time she did turn to look at him, still grinning just a little bit. “Well I suppose it’s better than the excitement of an actual emergency, right?” she questioned.
His smile grew slightly, “That is very true.” Silence followed as he tried to come up with a new topic that wouldn’t bring up anything touchy. “So, how’s your mom?” yeah, perfect, bring up family. Idiot.
She still wasn’t looking at him, but the corner of her mouth quirked up into a grin. “That sounds incredibly exciting,” she replied, joking around just a bit. Attempting to have at least a little normalcy between them.
He let out a light chuckle, mostly relieved to have even the slightest bit of normalcy. “So exciting.” he replied, sarcastically. “Almost as exciting as yesterday when we inspected the hoses.” he joked.
She couldn’t look him in the eye, hadn’t been able to since that night. So her focus remained on the menu, though she had picked out what she wanted almost right away. “Uh, yeah, I guess so,” she replied. “It was pretty boring, but not bad. What about you?”
He stared blankly at the menu to give himself a distraction, unable to look at her for long periods of time. “Pretty boring as well, cleaned the trucks today. Not a bad day though.” he nodded, finally putting the menu down.Â
She had been glancing at the menu and taking the occasional sip of the water she had ordered when Derek got there. Looking up, she returned the smile after just a second and shrugged. “Not too long. I got here like ten minutes ago,” she replied before looking back down at the menu. Two seconds together and things were already feeling awkward. This was going to be an extremely long lunch, she could tell already.
“Good.” he nodded, settling in. An awkward silence following. “So, have a good day?” he asked, picking up a menu to look it over, even if he did always order the same thing. Small talk was never really his favorite, but he honestly couldn’t think of what else to say.

It had been a month or so since that night at her house. The two of them had seen each other since then, but it had always been more polite than anything else. Never one for awkward or overly emotional conversations, Ash was mostly in favor of just forgetting the whole thing ever happened. Though she was surprised that Derek hadn’t brought it up yet. And she’d be lying if she said it wasn’t on her mind as she sat waiting for him at the diner where they were meeting.
Derek would be lying if he said he hadn’t thought about that night since. He was just too afraid to bring it up and push her. The last thing he wanted was for things to turn out like last time, so pushing her was completely off the table. If she wanted to pursue it, she’d bring it up, right? Now, he just quickly headed to the diner to meet her. Smiling immediately at seeing her already there. He sat down across from her, “Hey. I didn’t keep you waiting too long, did I?”

Ash: Well where's the fun in that??
Derek: It'll be fun.
Text to Ash
Ash: Whatever you say.
Derek: Then feel free to monitor my drinks tonight. ;P

Ash: Sounds like a problem.
Derek: It's not.
Text to Ash
Ash: It's no wonder you need a drink after work, really.
Derek: I always need a drink after work, whether it's slow or busy.

Ash: Uh huh. Then thanks.
Derek: You're welcome.

Ash: Still not sure that's much of a compliment.
Derek: It is a compliment though.
Text to Ash
Ash: Gee, thanks.
Derek: Kidding. You're much less boring than cards.

Ash: Because that's more exciting than cards?
Derek: Depending on my hand. :P

Ash: Sounds...fascinating.
Derek: Which is why I text you.

Ash: So what do you do when you're not out fighting fires?
Derek: Cleaning, eating, or playing cards.

Ash: That's not what I meant.
Derek: I know. :)

Ash: I was wondering why you weren't, you know, actually working.
Derek: Well I am a good multi-tasker. Thank you.
