During summer, this can make the house too hot.

What Does BTU Mean?

BTU stands for "British Thermal Units". This is how we measure heat in the UK. The BTU rating on a radiator tells you how much heat it can produce. They give you the rating as a BTU per hour, so you know how many BTU are produced within an hour.

To work out how many BTU per hour a room requires, you use a BTU calculator. They ask you for specific information, such as the size of the room, the type of room it is (e.g. bathroom, kitchen, bedroom), and whether it has double-glazing. It will then return to a BTU figure, e.g. 2000 BTU you then match this to the radiator.

For example, if the calculator tells you that you need 2000 BTU per hour, you buy a radiator that can produce 2000 BTU per hour. Or, you can buy to radiators that produce 1000 BTU per hour each and so the room receives 2000 BTU across two radiators instead of one.

What Are Watts?

Some people get confused by the difference between watts and BTU. Fortunately, they are just two different ways of measuring heat output. You can look at the wattage or the BTU measurement find out how much a radiator is likely to cost to run and whether it will be able to produce enough heat for the room.

What Does Orientation Mean?

Orientation simply refers to whether the radiator is taller than it is wider (vertical orientation), or wider than it is taller (horizontal orientation).

The orientation of a radiator does make an impact on how it can distribute heat. Generally, horizontal orientation is better than vertical orientation, but there are some exceptions.
