Redesigning the Job Interview Experience

DTNY members were hard at work this past Wednesday redesigning the job interview experience. It was our first workshop, and for many, it was the first time they used design thinking to come up with creative solutions to a real problem in need of a human touch. Here is a quick recap of how things went:

Here is a great example of a prototype one of the groups came up with. In order to help the interviewee overcome pre-interview anxiety, they designed an video which would be created by the interviewer(s) to introduce them and give the interviewee an idea of what to expect in the interview.

Test With prototyping complete, each of the groups proceeded to test their ideas with the "user". This was a chance to gather feedback and better understand the user as he/she experienced the solution. Ideally, this process would repeat itself several times until the product or solution meets the user's need. In many cases, the solution could change entirely if needs were misinterpreted in the earlier phases, but that is why design thinking is a great process. It allows you to get to this realization rapidly because you always keep the user front and center. What I could have done better I wouldn't be doing design thinking proper justice if I don't reflect on what I could have done better as a facilitator. I encourage all of you who attended to give me constructive feedback as well so that we can improve future sessions. From my perspective, I think the main thing I could have done better was to explain each step of the process (empathy, define, etc.) before the step begun. I tried to do this in my intro upfront but now realize that it was too much to take in at one time.
