i assume anon means this painting was used as a cover illustration for a history book about the 1789 revolution. unpopular opinion but i don’t mind it too much, it is one of the rare iconic paintings that represent the popular revolutionary spirit in a positive and relatable way. i can’t think up of an equivalent for the 1789 revolution, apart maybe David’s Tennis Court Oath but the subject and conveyed message are very different. frev paintings with a similar subject usually show immense crowds of revolutionaries so it’s harder to get one powerful emotion out of them.
