about fëanor. I think it is very interesting to read him as essentially a political prisoner in mandos. it's important to note that I'm not using 'political prisoner' as a shorthand for virtue or even good politics, but because the implication in the text is that he's being confined as a punishment for defying the will of the valar in general rather than for any specific violent act in and of itself*.

fëanor is very much a symbol in-universe. he is finwë's heir, the most famous noldor smith in aman, etc. etc. it makes sense that many people act in accordance with him. of course, that structure in and of itself is worthy of critique-- why does fëanor get afforded such a position of influence, why is his grief and rage able to reshape the world (imo it's a combination of the flaws of a monarchist model and, from a doylist perspective, tolkien showing an adherance to writing great man theory-based stories)-- but in the story itself, it definitively exists. fëanor incites the revolt of the noldor, and people follow him.

fëanor is influenced covertly by morgoth, but never turns to his side or grants any allegiance to him. in fact, he literally dies fighting creatures of morgoth. he dies having engaged in far less kinslayings than even his sons. his punishment/'doom' is disproportionate to the acts he's actually committed and instead seems to be based upon the positions he takes and the influence he holds in spreading those positions (i.e. 'corrupting' the noldor against the valar, inciting them to leave aman).

textually, fëanor's continued imprisonment is viewed as justified or at the very least morally neutral. this reflects tolkien's worldview as someone who is very catholic and seems to believe strongly in obeying the authority of those who (he thinks) are righteous. however, it has been decades since the silmarillion was written/published and we do not have to adopt tolkien's worldview when reading tolkien's work. if fëanor is confined to mandos when he does not wish to be, for the reason that he defied the valar and publicly incited the noldor to do the same, he is effectively a political prisoner. forever. until the breaking of the world. which is (imo) pretty abjectly horrifying seeing as it's even worse than the sentence morgoth got the first time around.

to be clear I don't think this is the only possible way to read fëanor remaining in mandos, or the only possible way to read mandos in general. but I think it is an interesting one, even if it does turn the text itself a little sour.

*I'm assuming that alqualondë was not the defining factor in fëanor being condemned to stay in mandos until the breaking of the world, because if it was then this condemnation would extend to everyone else that committed murder at alqualondë (or at least the commanders that gave the orders), and there's no indication that it does. in fact, the text indicates to the contrary because alqualondë combatants are allowed to return to aman after the war of wrath when the ban of the noldor is lifted. even galadriel is allowed back post ring war. and it wouldn't make sense for it to be predicated on him being the 'instigator' at alqualondë because there's no confirmation that said specific condemnation extends to those who were the 'instigators' of other (and worse) kinslayings. the text does not explicitly state that maedhros or maglor or the ambarussa are confined to mandos until the breaking of the world. you could interpret that they are (doom on fëanor's house), but there's nothing to confirm it. you could just as easily interpret the doom and disposession on fëanor's house to predicate their various misfortunes in beleriand (and the fact that they never regain the silmarils) rather than anything post-death.

and for you . an attack direct to the asks. for the record. i don't think 'jesus if he was pro and not anti violence' really fully encapsulates fëanor's role in the silm but it's certainly a great start . people dont dig deep enough into the fact that whatever the fuck happened to make feanor exist is genuinely cosmic horror just as much as ungoliant's existence as a world eating spider is . feanor was not just an exceedingly prolific elf feanor had like an intravenous drip to the imperishable flame and it literally tore him apart. terrible move on eru's part but when are his moves not terrible
