more diversity is good, yes. and like in general/on paper i agree with more progressive, diverse casting, but at some point i do need people to be more intentional with it. cause when you don't, then people feel like they can just swap their initially east asian faceclaim with like, a southeast asian one, and not see a problem with it 😭
this implies either a) they see most asians as interchangeable (bad) or b) the specific cultural and ethnic background of their fc wasn't factored into the character at all (also bad, imo).
i do understand the need for diversity rules, and i agree w/ them in principle, but i fear a lot of the time it just leads to having characters of colour that aren't actually written as characters of colour.
you're just gonna have to factor your fc's background into your character in some way, sorry. you're just gonna have to do it. it doesn't even have to be all that detailed (cause if you're writing outside of your experience, no matter how hard you try it's just never going to be the real deal), but it wouldn't hurt to research into some local customs or cuisine or even like, what the weather was generally like in the area they grew up in, you know? wouldn't hurt to mention those kinda things once or twice in their bio, or as a throwaway line in a thread or two, would it?
let's all get more #conscientious and #intentional with our casting choices.
Genuinely the narrative of Shilo Norman infuriates me because what do you mean Jack Kirby created a Black boy to be Scott's successor as Mister Miracle and his first appearance includes Scott & Barda taking him in, Scott saying "I see me" when he looks at Shilo while Barda implying she sees Auralie and them both promising not to fail him. And the tagline of this issue is Shilo "is soon to change the destiny and give new purpose to the life of Mister Miracle" btw!! What do you mean when the series ends Scott & Barda leave Earth and Shilo ALONE and then when they come back he's in COLLEGE!!! But then when Barda & Scott look at Shilo flying around as Mister Miracle they embrace each other and Scott LITERALLY SAYS it makes him feel like a proud father and Barda echoes the sentiment. And DON'T FORGET that the themes of Fourth World in general revolve around biological vs. chosen families and the ability to choose good despite/in spite of your parentage. ALL THIS just so each new ScottBarda writer can make another biological White baby while most people don't even know Shilo exists I'LL RUN DC COMICS OVER WITH MY CAR
