rita  doesn’t  exactly  come  from  humble  beginnings  ,  the  daughter  of  a  wealthy  business  man  /  hotel  owner  ,  and  of  course  a  socialite  —  think  lily  van  der  woodsen  !  now  ,  her  mother  ,  despite  all  of  her  riches  ,  was  an  awfully  bored  woman  ,  so  between  galas  ,  brunch  with  the  girlies  ,  and  charity  events  ,  she  threw  her  daughter  into  beauty  pageants  but  like  ...  for  the  elite  ...  more  like  talent  shows  ,  albeit  ones  that  you  had  to  beautiful  enough  to  win  .  so  ,  yeah  ,  beauty  pageants  ,  there’s  no  sugar  coating  it  .  however  ,  rita  genuinely  enjoyed  partaking  ,  when  she  was  actually  old  enough  to  comprehend  just  what  she  was  doing  .  she  was  a  natural  ,  born  to  be  on  stage  ,  and  although  her  mother  often  favoured  ballet  as  her  special  talent  ,  rita  came  to  prefer  acting  and  eventually  asked  to  be  enrolled  in  acting  school  .

rita’s  aesthetic  can  be  summed  up  into  three  things  :  the  charming  laughter  of  a  young  starlet  ,  love  letters  written  in  cursive  ,  and  the  golden  age  of  hollywood  .  it’s  very  dreamy  and  romantic  ,  and  oh  so  pink  .  it’s  pink  ballgowns  ,  fluffy  heels  ,  pearl  necklaces  and  champagne  .  chanel  ,  christian  dior  ,  silk  and  lace  .  it’s  certainly  something  she  adheres  to  strictly ;  it’s  her  brand  .

at  the  familiar  voice  ,  malcolm  sighs  ,  wishes  he  was  sensible  enough  to  look  at  someone’s  face  before  talking  to  them  .  not  that  he’d  avoid  rita  ,  by  any  means  ,  but  he  did  usually  need  a  moment  to  brace  himself  for  the  ,  no  doubt  ,  frosty  conversation  that  was  about  to  take  place  .  nevertheless  ,  he  catches  the  lighter  out  of  reflex  ,  a  signature  smirk  taking  its  place  on  his  lips  .  “ thank  you  for  calling  me  beautiful  .  ”  it’s  one  of  the  tricks  he  learned  about  talking  with  rita  ,  to  only  take  in  half  of  what  she  says  and  willfully  ignore  the  less  than  nice  parts  .  it  also  pisses  her  off  most  of  the  time  ,  which  he  doesn’t  not  find  amusing  .  “  oh  ,  so  sharing  a  lighter  is  equivalent  to  a  marriage  proposal  these  days  ?  i  must  be  engaged  to  so  many  people  if  that’s  the  case  .  ”  and  there  it  is  ,  the  main  reason  things  would  never  work  out  between  them  ;  rita  and  her  perceived  image  ,  the  shame  of  her  being  seen  with  a  guy  that  wears  the  same  two  pairs  of  jeans  and  still  prefers  to  take  the  bus  .  she  at  least  has  the  decency  to  be  honest  about  it  ,  never  lied  to  him  or  led  him  on  ,  probably  one  of  the  only  reasons  he  holds  no  contempt  for  the  blonde  .

whether  rita  realises  it  or  not  ,  it  was  the  day  that  her  mother  ,  who  was  slowly  losing  her  youth  ,  decided  to  enter  her  in  a  beauty  pageant  .  no  longer  could  her  mother  win  awards  and  accolades  for  her  beauty  but  she  knew  her  daughter  could  ,  and  in  turn  ,  she  could  live  vicariously  through  her  four  year  old  child  .  it  was  the  day  of  the  pageant  ,  and  her  very  first  win  ,  that  stole  her  childhood  from  her  and  the  chance  to  be  a  kid  .  even  though  rita  enjoyed  it  ,  it  taught  her  terrible  things  regarding  her  self  worth  .  she  quickly  came  to  realise  that  as  long  as  she  was  pretty  ,  she  could  be  successful  .  she  didn’t  need  brains  ,  talent  ,  she  could  just  get  by  on  being  pretty  .

loved  —  no  ,  adored  .  rita  wants  nothing  more  than  to  be  than  to  be  idolised  ,  for  her  talent  ,  her  beauty  and  for  who  she  is  .  her  dream  is  to  be  loved  ,  as  marilyn  monroe  was  and  like  all  of  the  other  starlets  that  came  before  her  .  however  ,  she  doesn’t  just  want  love  from  the  public  but  also  those  around  her  .  though  ,  she  doesn’t  want  to  reciprocate  that  adoration  .  she  just  wants  people  to  dote  on  her  and  to  be  immortalised  by  the  love  that  people  have  for  her  .

regret  is  not  something  rita  believes  in  and  therefore  ,  she  doesn’t  have  any  .  after  all  ,  how  can  she  maintain  her  floaty  and  dreamy  girl  aura  if  she’s  being  weighed  down  by  regrets  and  what  ifs  ?  she  lives  very  much  in  the  present  ,  so  she  has  no  worries  and  frets  about  the  past  .  perhaps  it’s  because  she’s  always  lived  with  such  little  troubles  that  she  can  afford  not  dwelling  in  the  past  .

you’d  think  with  how  quixotic  rita  is  that  she  would  believe  in  magic  and  yet  ,  she  doesn’t  .  she  did  ,  however  ,  when  she  was  a  wide  eyed  ,  imaginative  child  .  she  remembers  being  told  by  her  nanny  that  fairies  lived  in  their  beautiful  flower  garden  in  bordeaux  ,  france  ,  her  hometown  .  she  would  spend  hours  twirling  among  the  flower  beds  ,  talking  to  her  fairy  friends  ,  and  if  anyone  else  was  to  see  the  garden  ,  with  all  its  beauty  ,  they’d  believe  it  homed  magical  beings  too  .
