“My bad,” Hannah said with an apologetic smile, “that’s really cute though.” Her hands clasped together, intertwining her fingers tightly. “Yeah, it’s nice,” she shrugged her shoulders. “Did you happen to snag yourself a date?” Hannah asked, smirking a bit and raising an eyebrow. “I didn’t think staff members were allowed to, like, date and stuff… but I’ve seen some things tonight.”

“I just have a tie for every day of the week so it doesn’t look like I’m wearing the same thing everyday.” He responded with a laugh. “Just nice? Are you having a good time?” He asked, sensing the other’s lack of enthusiasm. “Nope, no date. I’m here by myself making sure you kids and honestly some of the staff keep yourselves out of trouble. I’ve been keeping an eye on a few suspicious ones but so far so good. I don’t think anyone wants this night to be ruined. I’m hoping a bit of fun will put everyone in a good mood and make my job easier.”

Claire looked at him with a smile on her face, shrugging lightly. “I don’t see anything wrong with your outfit, Devin.” She said, chuckling softly. “Why? Are people staring or whispering behind your back?”

“They’re whispering, I don’t know if it’s about me or not. Being staff I’m automatically not the favorite in the room right now.” He said with a laugh as he leaned up against the wall. “What brings you here? Are you chaperoning as well or just enjoying the evening with the patients?”

Every other word that Devin had spoken seemed to dissolve, once he brought up his promise. How could she even forget? Makeup was a form of art the shorter, intoxicated brunette. Demi’s appearance meant absolutely everything to her and the therapist was so willing to help her. A smile danced on her lips, revealing the pearls that her plump lips usually concealed. Leaning in closer to the man, she battered her lashes, as to innocently try and convince him that she was already doing much better. “You know Dev, I think I’m doing amazing. Like, I feel so much better tonight and let’s be honest, I probably look better than a majority of the other girls here… Bar Serena obviously because she looks killer-“ As the girl continued to ramble on about the efforts she poured into her own hair and makeup tonight, her mind seemed to be completely forgetting the fact that her disorder was all based on seeking attention. She was a known narcissist in Serenity yet to her, there was nothing wrong with herself. In her eyes, whilst she was attempting to strengthen her personality to Devin, she was only reiterating the fact that she very much did suffer from the disorder that she denied having.

Devin thought about it for a moment, it was quite obvious that she was trying to make it seem like she was getting better to get what she wanted. But since he was no longer her therapist he had no idea if this was true or not. For all he knew it could be. But then he got an idea. A way to help her while also rewarding her in the process. “How about this, I’ll make another deal with you. You find 5 girls, or boys even if that’s something they want, to give makeovers to. I’ll get the supplies. If you successfully complete the task you can keep the rest of the makeup.” Devin thought it was a good idea. It would force Demi to focus on someone else not just on herself and he figured a makeover would make some of the other patients feel better about themselves. Everyone deserved a bit of pampering every once in a while. “I wish I would have thought of this before the dance but that’s okay. I’ll find a patient who enjoys photography and they’ll get something out of it as well. We’ll take pictures of all your makeup looks and start your portfolio.”

“I never said anything was wrong with it? I mean.. I think it looks fine.” she shrugged lightly. “Especially if you’re only here to chaperone.”

“I’m here to chaperone and catch up on some reading while I do so.” Devin clutched the book in his hands, holding thep age where he had left off before taking a break from reading to make sure everyone was behaving themselves. “I tried to make somewhat of an effort to look nice but then I remembered this is basically what I wear to work everyday.”

This wasn’t what Samantha had expected to get out of their conversation, and the minute the air between them turned cold and heavy she took a small step back in surprise. She had followed him off to the side where it was noticeably less noisy, and yet she couldn’t help but notice that with their relocation, his anger for her seemed to resurface…and that was when Samantha registered the look in his eyes as one of jealousy. She didn’t say anything, however, being too hesitant to start a problem in such a public place during such a rare moment of happiness and carefree fun for the patients. While she had her moments of recklessness, Samantha was anything but ignorant towards her patients. She refused to spoil what could very well be some of their last happy memories, considering the trauma she knew many of them had been through, and the suffering she was sure a handful of patients in the medical ward had to look forward to in the future as far as illnesses were concerned. And so instead of speaking so much, she merely clenched her jaw and let her eyes narrow slightly, standing her place. She could feel the anger boiling beneath her skin–that familiar itching sensation that she usually channeled into playing sports or sparring. Samantha was never good with words, she was better at expressing herself in a good competitive sport where she could release her emotions physically. “Yeah, I’m sure he was a good friend.” She bit her tongue to keep from mentioning that he must be a pretty shitty friend to Quentin if this was the first time she was finding out about their ‘great’ friendship. But she didn’t have any right to explode on him, no matter how badly she wanted to. The way she saw it, he had no right to be treating her so rudely when she had done nothing but treat him with kindness. It was rare for her to show some sign of patience, and now she was running out of it. “I wasn’t, actually. But now that you mention it, I might as well go see what he’s up to. I had something to ask him.” She snapped back, meeting his gaze with a hard glare before turning and walking off.

Devin could feel anger rise in him with every passing moment, an emotion that he didn’t often feel. He didn’t understand why he was so angry, he and Quentin were just friends and this wasn’t the first time he had seen the other with a female. He could remember how he felt when he saw the two of them together but his heart was so used to breaking due to constant loss and rejection it became a natural feeling. It wasn’t like him to lash out but he found himself lashing out at the female though he didn’t know anything about her and she’d done nothing wrong. He felt that familiar sting in his heart when he realized that she really had no idea who he was. It hurt that Quentin hadn’t mentioned him to her considering their history. But in his defense he had every right to still be at least a little mad at him. He’d left Serenity months ago with no warning and didn’t speak to him for months. He had to find out from his grandmother what was going on with him. That didn’t make it hurt any less. “He still is...” He responded when she said that she was sure he was a good friend, using past tense. He wanted to let her know that he wasn’t getting out of the picture. “You’re not fooling anyone. You look like a lovesick puppy.” Devin couldn’t even bring himself to regret his words he as feeling so many emotions in that moment he didn’t know how to handle it. “Good luck.” He said sarcastically holding his drink up to the other as she walked away.

Her face dropped as soon as Devin’s honesty was unravelled, as if she was disappointed, when in reality, it didn’t make any difference. As long as she had something to miss with the vodka that she had gotten from Candy, the brunette was happy and in that very moment, she was invincible. Nothing was going to ruin her evening. Well, besides not winning Queen of the Snowball. Letting her attention divert back to him, Demi’s eyes glittered as she soon begun to listen to his other words. “I’ll be sure to try them, they best be tasty though.” She smiled, swaying lightly from side to side as she took another sip of the fruit-infused cocktail. “You do that-“ She had to take this conversation elsewhere though, she couldn’t possibly let Devin know that she was under the influence. “You know, you were a good therapist. It kinda sucks that I got moved from your list.”

“Don’t look so disappointed. Store bought punch is pretty tasty. There are some other treats to enjoy. I’m sure I’m not the only one who made something. I promise you you’ll love the cookies, everyone does.” Devin’s eyes ventured over to the crowd of patients for a quick moment to make sure everything was under control. They quickly averted back to her as she continued to speak. The conversation would easily be lost if he didn’t give his full attention due to his lack of hearing. He smiled at her kind words. He hadn’t been feeling so good about himself lately so it was something that he needed to hear. Even if she was tipsy or drunk, he was unaware. “Thank you, I really appreciate you saying that. And you know, my door is always open even though I’m not your therapist anymore. You can always talk to me about anything. And I’m still holding my end of the bargain we made. You make a noticeable effort to get better and I’ll buy you some makeup. And I’ll do what I can to help you with your future career if makeup artistry is something you really want to pursue.”

The wedding I never got. Samantha could feel her heart clench in her chest, and for a brief moment she felt bad for bringing it up in the first place. She held back from apologizing and instead gave a tight smile, ignoring the guilt as it began to rise in the pit off her stomach. “She sounds amazing.” Sam had never met her actual grandparents, but she always loved hearing about other’s. She wasn’t a typically patient person, but somehow old people managed to calm her down in ways that nobody else could. She couldn’t imagine coming back after some time, couldn’t even begin to understand why he would want to come back to a job like this when there were probably many more glamorous jobs available for someone like him. Holding her breath, she was genuinely uncertain whether or not she should continue to ask about him or not. She decided against it ultimately and cleared her throat instead. “Yeah uh, I just got here a couple days ago. But it feels like its been a bit longer, admittedly.” She could feel her cheeks beginning to grow warm and broke her gaze from his almost as though she would find Quentin from across a sea of people. Realizing that Devin was still there, however, she quickly blinked back the dazed look in her eyes to return her full attention to the therapist she had just met. “I am so sorry. About…whatever happened. I really am sorry. You, uh, you must have some good friends here to come back to then.“

“She really is. I don’t know where I’d be without her.” And it was the truth. If it wasn’t for his grandmother he definitely wouldn’t be where he was today. And for that alone he was very grateful for her. As the conversation continued between the two Devin’s anger relaxed a bit but there was still a hint of something in the back of his mind. He didn’t realized that it was jealousy and fear and the only reason why he had been angry in the first place. He was jealous after seeing the girl with Quentin. And he was afraid that he would loose another person that he cared about. “It’s tough working in a place like this and it’s incredibly draining at times. But also rewarding. Especially when you see patients improving and working toward getting out of here.” Devin’s eyes were on her lips the music made it impossible for him to hear her. He motioned for her to step over to where it was quieter but they could still keep their eyes on the kids. “Nothing happened, I just needed a break so you have nothing to be sorry for.” He lied. Devin hated talking about his depression and that it caused him to take a leave of absence. He didn’t want anything to think that it made him a bad therapist. “I have one friend. But I think you already know him and we’ve been friends for a while. Quentin and I went to college together. And no, neither of us had any idea that the other worked here. We kind of lost touch for a while. That was my fault.” Devin hadn’t realized the pained look in his eyes knowing that not once but twice he had pushed his best friend away. “You must be looking for him. But I don’t know where he is.” He said a bit harshly.

Her fingertips travelled to her lips, as if to physically ‘button it’. Demetria had already spilled way more than what she should have, however, being the popular girl in high school had given her a one up on others, and that was her manipulative behavior. Able to twist her words into a deeper-webbed lie, the brunette straightened her posture and shot Devin a rather serious look, fighting back the dizziness that spiraled around in her mind. “Of course, it’s just punch, it tastes good though. Do you know who made it?” Forcing herself to act back to her regular self, the Demetria that Devin really knew, the girl rolled her eyes backwards. “Oh, come on. If somebody snuck in their own alcohol or bought it, do you really think that they’d be dumb enough to get everybody else here drunk? That’s just stupid.”

“Honestly it’s probably just Hawaiian punch or some store bought brand.” He admitted his eyes venturing from the cup back to the girl in front of him. Maybe she was just trying to have a good time. The patients here were always displaying some strange behavior so he could never tell what was normal and was not. But the truth was this was their normal and now it was his normal. “I made the cookies though. I got bored last night and figured you guys would like some homemade cookies made from scratch rather than some store bought cookies.” Devin nodded his head. She was right. If someone snuck alcohol in they’d probably keep it all to themselves. Getting everyone drunk would be too obvious but this did raise some suspicion about her. “Right, well I’ll be keeping an eye out. It’s kind of my job tonight. The last thing I want to do is cut this night short but I will if I have to for the safety of the patients and staff.”

“Nothing really, it’s just your tie is squint,” she reiterated for the man, the music making it somewhat difficult to hear everything that was said. “Wait a minute!” Serena added, taking a step back in fake shock. “That’s no fun, you have to at least try and enjoy yourself.”

Devin looked a bit confused as the other spoke. He couldn’t hear her over the music and he had some difficulty reading her lips. “What did you say?” He asked, already feeling rude for having to make her repeat herself. He was vaguely able to make out what she said next. He could make out some words and was able to piece together what she was saying. “I’ve never been a fan of dances. I didn’t even go to my prom in high school. I’m not a very good dancer and I’m not very good at socializing either as you can probably tell.”

“Business casual?” She studied his outfit for a brief moment before giving a single nod of approval. She could vaguely sense an air of distaste towards her on behalf of the other man, but she didn’t dare acknowledge it. Instead she did something she rarely did and gave this man–Devin–the benefit of the doubt, hoping he was simply mistaking her for some long lost enemy of his. The last thing she needed was to stir up some unwanted drama, which would no doubt happen if she dwelled on it any longer. He seemed friendly enough, which was all she could ask for. “You grandma has great taste.” She meant it genuinely as she gave the man a smile, shaking his offered hand. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Devin. Have you worked here long?” She asked, keeping an eye out at the crowd of patients dancing before returning her attention to him.

“You will probably never see me in something fancy that reminds me of the wedding I never got...” He said casually at first but his eyes grew wide when he realized that he had said that out loud. He instantly pushed it aside an tried to change the subject which she made it really easy to. “My grandma has excellent taste in everything that she does. She’s one of those really cool grandmas that you forget that she’s a grandma sometimes when you’re around her. Until she comes out with a plate of cookies and tells you don’t eat too many or you’ll get a tummy ache then slips you an extra cookie when no one is looking.” Devin smiled talking about his grandma, she was the only family that he had and he never took her for granted. “Well I just recently came back after taking some time off but I guess I’ve been working here for some time now. I’m one of the therapists here. What about you?”

Quentin laughed at his friend’s witty comment and applauded him nodding, “There see! Confidence. I promise you’ll be having guys and girls alike flocking to you if you acted more like that.” he replied before taking another sip of his own drink, his eyes skimming over the gestures and movements of Devin’s hands. It took a moment for Quentin to understand what had just been said to him, but he was sure it was something motivational knowing the other who stood before him. “Well hey, then I better drink more if I ever hope to sign something decent to you.” he joked, taking another sip. For a moment, it seemed like the two of them were just back in college, enjoying the other’s company and drinking like there wasn’t a care in the world. “Awww come onnn,” Quentin whined, acting like the child he was, “I want to hear how you’ve been doing. Besides, don’t you miss drunk feelings time? It’s like… Like group therapy, but with alcohol. And I know you get drunk fast, out of the three of us, you were probably the quickest to get drunk.” The nurse paused as memories of the three of them in school continues to play in his mind. One of his best friends was gone and the other had lost part of his hearing. What had gone so wrong. “So, you seeing anyone yet? Or have a cute school girl crush? Come on, give me something.”

“I’ve got a ton of baggage and can barely hear. What a catch.” He said sarcastically as the bartender brought him another drink. He took a sip of the drink before setting it down on the bar in front of him. It was true that Devin wasn’t the most confident person in the world. It was something he knew he needed to work on but had no motivation to do so. “I’ve had enough therapy to last me a lifetime as well from being on both sides of it.” He laughed a bit as if he was joking trying to make light of the situation though it was true. “I was always the first one drunk and the first one in bed at the end of the night.” He remembered their nights in college well. Though Devin took his studies very seriously he still managed to be the typical college kid who’d go out drinking with his friends and get drunk. He had some of the best times with the two of them but the memories just mad him sad since one of them was no longer with them. Someone who he loved dearly and planned on marrying one day. It was still really hard without him. “Dating has been the last thing on my mind. I didn’t leave Serenity for months to go on dates. It took a long time to not feel guilty about dating again. But my last date was such a disaster maybe that’s the universe telling me I should feel guilty.” Devin took another sip of his drink. It didn’t take long before he was starting to feel the alcohol in his system. “You didn’t miss much in the past few months. I’ve spent a lot of time by myself. My grandma did show me how to make the cookies that you used to devour. Though she wants you to come visit her so she can make them for you herself. My grandma loves you for some odd reason.” He joked, with a laugh.

“Nothing, I said I liked your tie,” Hannah said with a sweet smile. Making casual conversation with a staff member wasn’t exactly what Hannah wanted to do, like ever, but the man seemed nice. And it was nice to get away from the crowd for a little bit. “D-Did you chaperone by choice? Or were you one of the staff members who couldn’t get out of it?

“Oh thank you. Sorry I don’t hear very well. My grandma gave me this tie when I graduated college to wear on my first day of work. I wear it quite often.” He replied, smiling at the other. “I volunteered. I like seeing everyone having a good time. It’s not like you kids get to do stuff like this all the time. It’s nice to see everyone having fun and not worrying about being stuck in this place.”

“Chaperoning whoooooo?” Demetria teased, lightly poking into his stomach as she took another sip of her punch-disguised drink. “Nothings wrong with it Dev, I mean, it’s not exactly the most sexy…” The girl giggled, biting down on her lip as she realised that maybe she was acting a little out of character.

Devin raised an eyebrow at the other at the way she was acting. His eyes narrowed down to her drink. “I really hope that is punch. Because someone will be getting in trouble if it’s not and that’s the last thing that I want.” Devin sighed, it wasn’t like these kids got to do fun things like this all the time. The last thing he wanted was for the night to be ruined. “It’s not suppose to be sexy. Did someone spike the punchbowl?”

Sam looked over at the man and smiled wryly. “Nothing’s wrong. Its just a little too fancy if you ask me, but then again I’m really not one who goes all out.” Samantha herself was wearing her usual uniform, the only thing different was that her hair was curled and her make up was a little more obvious than her every day look. For someone who was naturally stunning, the mascara and lipstick only enhanced the beauty that was already there. But as the other male spoke about his own attire her attention was focused on him, and then on the fact that she hadn’t seen him around. “I like your tie, though, for what its worth. Also, I’m Samantha. Don’t think we’ve met.”

“This is pretty much what I wear to work everyday. I wouldn’t say it’s fancy, more like business casual. I am a therapist after all. I can’t show up to work in jeans and a tshirt.” Devin recognized the female. He had seen her with his best friend and he knew that something was going on between them though they hadn’t met officially. Seeing them together made him angry but he didn’t know why. He didn’t even know her he had no reason to be angry. But Quentin was his best friend he had to push that aside and try to be nice for his sake. “Thanks, my grandma gave me this one. It’s nice to meet you, I’m Devin.” He said before extending his hand out to the other to shake her hand.

“What’s wrong with my outfit?” He asked, looking down at what he was wearing. It wasn’t much different than what he usually wore to work. Just a variation of a shirt, tie, and dress pants. “I’m only here to chaperone anyways.”

Xavier rolled his eyes and nodded slowly. “Yeah, it feels like it’s going to take me forever to pay it off.” he laughed and watched the other curiously. “I don’t really mind long hours either, in my opinion it keeps me busy and less lonely.” he shrugged, being honest. “I went to school in Michigan, so moving out here for a job well… It’s really different and I don’t know anyone yet… Speaking of, I’m Xavier by the way,” the younger male smiled and laughed at the mention of Teen Mom. “I’ve seen ads for that, is it any good?”

“I just have to remember that I love my job and it was worth going to school for an extra two years whenever the bill comes in.” He added with a small laugh. “I hear ya on that. I was thinking about getting a pet so I’m not all alone in my apartment but then I realized I’m not home enough to take care of a pet.” Devin nodded his head to show the other that he was listening though he always looked like he was listening. He always had to listen a lot more closely so that he wouldn’t have to ask anyone to repeat themselves too often. But he couldn’t quite catch the other’s name. “I’m sorry, what did you say your name was? I was listening but I don’t hear very well. I’m Devin.” Devin extended his hand out to the other so that he could shake his hand. “I think it’s pretty entertaining. I don’t know why it’s still called Teen Mom though when they’re all in their 20s now. I only watch the original ones.”
