OOC PSA

Hey guys, so it’s come to my attention that people are still afraid to DM me when and if Addi gets to be too much for them.

Addi is a controversial character in terms of preference - an acquired taste because he is very much an emotionally stunted ex-serial killer. His reactions can go from 0-100 very quickly for very stupid and very minor reasons. Yes, most of the time these reasons make no sense to anyone but Addifore himself.

Please always tell me if I am ever rping him in a way that makes you uncomfortable. Addifore is not me OOC, it’s very hard, if not nigh impossible to make me angry OOCly over RP; I do not mind if you need me to reel him back, I understand his volatile language and aggressive behavior when he’s upset can trigger or upset some people. That is why I try to communicate that you can always DM me and ask me to step away. Please, please be aware that none of Addifore’s behavior is reflected from my behavior or mood or opinion of you OOCly. He hates a good many people RPed by some of my closest friends.

Hey! I started working on a template shortly after I finished the Trust meme, but then saw other templates being released, so I kind of sat on my hands wondering if I should post it. But what the heck, why not?

PSA for Roleplayers: New/Unique Sub-50 Gear Added

Howdy friends and lovers! I have yet to see anyone make mention of this, so I though that I’d take the liberty of doing so myself for all you glamorous people out there!

The other day I happened to notice someone in Eulmore wearing an old robe model, only it had a totally different look than I had seen before. When I inspected them, the gear was listed as an “altered” item. Curious, I searched my crafting log and lo and behold!

Turns out there’s a bunch of these! They aren’t all classified as altered items, mind. But just as an example, here is Rufus in the altered cobalt armour, which is a recolour of the Cavalry set from Brayflox normal:

Personally, I love this set. So I took to crafting it quickly - which was super inexpensive - and haven’t looked back. What I have done, however, is look at the list of new items datamined in Shadowbringers and copied from it what items appear to be new ones so that you lot could have a spoiler-free look at the names of the new stuff so you can check it out for yourself. Hopefully that’s helpful!

Viera naming

See my post on Hrothgar naming here!

In absence of SE providing any naming conventions, I thought I’d pull down a bunch of the names of the random generator and try to derive some name derivations for RPers to use until those posts come up. 

Rava and Veena

There seem to be very few differences between given names in the Rava and Veena clans; indeed, several of the same names appear in both generators (Thracie, Creanise, and Piane, at least). Viera names seem to be divided up into two separate derivation sets. The first appears to be conceptually related to Norwegian or Icelandic names which, given the predilection for the devs for ancient languages, suggests that they are of Old West Norse derivation, or at least styled as such. I speculate that these are “traditional” viera names. Examples of these names are Elin, Acja, Eljth, Nyr, Bjonse, Sjol, and Kjat.

The second set of names is largely French and, I suspect, is the set of names used by viera who have left their forest homes. Examples of such names are Rachine, Blenna, Yvette, Sophie, Lachelle, and Lorilae.

Where there appear to be differences are in the surnames. Veena and Rava have separate lists – but they appear to have no real-world linguistic analogue. That said, a cursory scan reveals that many of them are locations in Final Fantasy Tactics, Final Fantasy XII, and their spinoffs. Given that the Dalmasca area is more or less transferred from these games, this makes a great deal of sense if viera surnames are geographical surnames. Whether these are places of birth or simply places of importance to the viera in question is a matter on which I don’t have enough information to plausibly speculate.

I hope this helps with naming your viera while we wait for the official naming conventions post!

Early Access and Launch week survival guide: What to expect and prepare for

Just a little list of what players can and should expect and prepare for when Shadowbringers goes into early access next week, followed by official launch shortly after, from someone who has survived many, many launch days for expansion packs.

In no particular order, here is a bundle of some helpful tips and reminders:

-Clean your inventory and retainers out: Do this and do this soon. New quests means new rewards and randomly obtained items dropped from monsters. If you do not have the bagspace now, you will definitely not have the bagspace when ShB drops! Don’t be caught with full bags!

-Turn off shout, yell and titles: Sometimes people want to avoid all things spoiler related, no matter how mild or vague the spoiler might be. So just to be safe, make sure you turn off Shout and Yell, and turn off Titles! Last time a spoiler title got through for the MSQ, it’s been changed since then, but just in case! This is a reminder to do that before servers go down for maintenance!

-Blacklist ShB stuff on social media: People are gonna wanna scream about spoilers on their social media, and it’s their right to do so! It’s their little corner of the internet! But to protect yourself, be sure to blacklist appropriately and, if you have to, temporarily avoid those who do not tag! You can always refollow after you’ve caught up! :D

-Get some IRL stuff done before launch: During the day servers are down for maintenance, get your house chores done! Do your laundry, clean those dishes, take all the trash out, buy some good quick snacks and tidy up your space. Make sure everything is clean, ready and set for extended periods of gameplay so you can play mostly uninterrupted. Bonus points if you prep throughout the week leading up!

-Take plenty of AFK breaks: Ensure to drink plenty of water, get plenty of sleep, shower and just take time away from the computer to walk (Please take care of family and pets too!). Don’t play the game without breaks. I know those queue times are gonna be rough, but playing without pause is really bad for your health, trust me. Look up Final Fantasy XI “Pandemonium Warden” and read about that 18 hour boss without breaks. Nasty stuff.

-Expect big queues upon logging in, especially during zero hour: No matter the data center you play on, expansion packs will bring a lot of new players and returning players. And people will likely server jump to avoid queues and fill up servers that are currently empty. Just have patience, make sure you have something to do while waiting(download a phone game or work on some art, ect), the queues will pass and things will settle. They always do. :]

-If we have the AFK campers like Stormblood: Calmly bring the issue up to the dev team on the forum so they can engage the daily server reset again. Though I’m sure they’ll be expecting it again, but just incase, don’t panic! We’ve survived this before. :D

-Expect the inevitable DDOS: Someone out there is going to see the FFXIV community excited for a good time and will want to ruin it, I’ve seen it happen with MMOs and any new online games (Even Overwatch got hit on launch day). If the servers start crashing a lot out of no where, assume it’s the DDOSers at their nonsense again and be patient, the dev team will be working around the clock to get servers up and stablized.

-Have a lil bit of patience and make alternate plans for in-game: Early Access and Launch week for any game is rough, so try to be patient. Queues will be long, servers will be shaky, DDOSing will be happening, loads of players will be fighting the same quest mobs, worlds will be clogged. Just be as patient as you can, things will smooth out gradually and all will be well. If you plan to do MSQ and its a chaos zone, make sure you have a fallback plan to do something else in-game while you wait for things to calm down!

-There will be bugs: Unfortunately that’s just how these things are. You’re probably going to hit a quest or a dungeon that will be bugged to heckity that the dev-team didn’t find in their testing, or it didn’t happen until the servers went live. Bugs are sneaky lil shits that will show up in the least expected of places, so be sure to report them and know that the dev team will be on it as fast as they can. Most importantly, be kind: The rush to end-game always gets pretty intense, especially with all the multitude of problems that come when the game launches. So be sure to be kind to one another, especially to our new players, who will be very confused and fumbling around trying to make sense of our crazy, content-packed game. ;w;

With the hype for Shadowbringers

I want to put this into airwaves and scream into the void that is tumblr and the FFXIV community on it: 

I’ve played since ARR and I’ve seen two expansion launches. We’re going into our third. In my time in WoW, I’ve seen xpac launches since the announcement of Wrath. The hype is real, and it is pretty exciting since we have just over a month to wait until early access of Shadowbringers. With that being said: 

I guarantee that the launch will not be perfect. Heavensward launch was a fandango that ended up with the first week or so being difficult to even log in and play. Stormblood had Raubahn EX. And now, Final Fantasy XIV has more players than Yoshi-P ever predicted. While the devs have worked towards alleviating the issues that have cropped up, it will not be perfect. Coding is a fickle mistress, and you can beta test the hell out of something, but sometimes, it will still manage to shit the bed. 

Do not expect things to go smoothly the moment servers go live. There will be thousands of people trying to log in once the floodgates open. If things go smooth? Great! But please be patient. 

The devs have worked hard to give us a wonderful experience. If something goes awry, they’re going to work their tails off to fix it. They’re human. Be kind, patient, and considerate when the expansion drops.

Your character might have heard about his unique quirks or suggestions to keep their distance; they might seek him out because of these things or to seek instruction!

FAILING MARRIAGE - Killian married into a prominent Ishgardian family and rose quickly over a couple turns from no-name lowborn to viscount. He just as quickly lost it all after his wife left him. Your Ishgardian character might recognize him (for good or for ill) as a result of his alarming rise to power or his integration with the uniquely unusual Ishgardian noble House de Bayle, easily recognizable by the tattoo on his forehead.

LOOKING FOR WORK - Having recently left the employ of House de Bayle, Killian is looking for anything that might earn him some extra money. Perhaps your character is looking for an instructor in conjury, arcanima, or alchemy, or simply looking for a healer for hire. Whatever the case, Killian is likely to have his children with him as he lacks the means and desire to have someone else watch them while he’s out.

FRIENDSHIPS  - Killian is in a weird place of wanting friendships while simultaneously also not wanting them. As a result, his behavior is often conflicted, crossed somewhere between reaching out and pushing people away. Anyone who wants to form a lasting relationship will probably have to be persistent about it through his efforts to distance himself as he struggles with his new life as a single father and his insistent belief that everyone will eventually leave him.

FAMILY - Killian’s mother may or may not have mothered a bastard child or several on her climb up the social ladder in Ishgard. As a result, Killian doesn’t have much of an idea of his immediate family or how many siblings he might have. Maybe your character is one of his long-lost half-siblings!

I’m hoping to find long-term contacts to help my character grow and develop, although I understand that might be difficult thanks to his reluctance to form friendships at the moment.
