❝ Well, if anyone’s stupidity gets to be too much, then you can come find me. I’ll help with whatever I can. ❞
"Thanks for the offer, but I get the feeling you'd be pretty useless."
Night Reading || Dianthe and Diana
Dianthe let out a breath. This again? She was not in the mood to deal with a security woman at the moment. There was no way to get Dianthe to leave unless she wanted to, simple as that. You couldn’t kill her, of course hurting was possible. You could persuade her, she simply refused anyone could. Dianthe didn’t like to get her hands dirty however, attacking people wasn’t her favourite thing because it was too hands on. She could do it though, she was fairly strong and at least stronger than she looked. She was pissed off too so it helped. Dianthe however, preferred to just seethe tonight and didn’t want an interruption. “It’s so beautiful here. I couldn’t resist coming back,” smiled Dianthe.
Diana did not even bother attempting to suppress the oncoming eye roll, despite the wanton immaturity. She could not help but wonder if it was her fault that no one listened to her - some result of being tiny and female and automatically perceived as not a threat, regardless of how fiercely she fought to be taken seriously. "Don't feed me lies and excuses. There's a thousand other prettier places. Tell me why you're actually back and then escort yourself out."
❝Hopefully people will keep that in mind. ❞
"People are stupid, and, unfortunately, their stupidity is my problem by default."
❝ I guess we’ll all just have to be on our toes, then. ❞
"Best for everyone involved."
❝ I guess you’re right about that. Well, hopefully whoever is in charge of it will start hiring people who actually care. ❞
"Fat chance of that."
❝ That makes sense. Well,
it seems as though I’m all out of ideas. Maybe you just need more dedicated people working with you. ❞
"Or I need to quit and let someone else take over."
"Easier said than done. I'm not in charge of hiring and firing."
❝ Don’t you feel like that’s a fairly typical trait in people who do bad things? I don’t think a gun in their face is going to help. Have you tried a sort of prison system? If they’re locked up, then they can’t cause any more trouble. ❞
"It's been mentioned, but that takes time and energy to set up and moves attention away from the task at hand. I can't turn away long enough to set that up."
❝ Just you and not Violet? I guess it’s fine to be singular. So what are you doing, then? ❞
"I don't know what Violet has been doing so I can't speak for her."
"I've been shoving guns in people's faces and being belligerent and for some reason no one has any regard for their own fucking lives and listen to threats."
❝ Uh… Yes, I meant for the residents it would be a last resort. Though, I’m sure that there are a few members of the staff where it could be applicable too. ❞
"You're not wrong."
"But I was talking about what the guard staff - well, just me - is doing, not why we're here."
❝ I figured that much. ❞
❝ This seems like a last resort kind of place, anyway, so I’m not surprised. ❞
"For the residents, yes. It isn't supposed to be like that for the staff. Or - at least- I don't think it is."
❝ You might want to keep it down about the money, then. They might hear you and try their luck. I don’t think it’s particularly rude of you. Better safe than sorry. ❞
"I'm not too terribly concerned about that."
"There are theoretically more mature and controlled ways to deal with the situation, but when nothing works, nothing works and last resorts become the norm."
❝ You’re right. I didn’t think of that. But if I were you, I would take it as a compliment. They probably already know you would turn them down. And also arrest them all in one breath. ❞
"I'm in dire need of money, you never know. But you're right, I probably would shoot them before they finished speaking. Rude, but we all have our flaws."
❝ The guards… I guess that would really do it. ❞
❝This might be a bit of a shot in the dark, but have you thought of the possibility that the guards here are being paid off for not doing their jobs? ❞
"I feel like I would know if that was going on. I would've noticed, or I would've gotten an offer. If that's what's happening, I'm not sure whether I should be flattered or offended that no one's tried to buy me off."
❝ The incompetence of the residents, yes? That would seem to cause quite the problem. And Violet? Is she part of the security here as well? ❞
❝ Pleased to meet you, Diana. And I assume you’re taking care of the security problem? ❞
"Hmm? I suppose, though I've never thought of it that way. Most of the guards, actually, though that's fairly well known. Notorious incompetence, almost."
"I've been trying." Though trying was all that she could do, it seemed. She, too, was incompetent.
❝ I understand. I won’t press it any further. ❞
❝ I’ve only just arrived, actually. I had made the assumption that this was a Protection Palace. My name is Bradley Porter, by the way. I am one of the new tutors here. ❞
"Good."
"It is. Well - it would be. General incompetence is a bit of a problem. As is the stubbornness of repeat offenders. Diana Rescuer, head of security."
