Stimming beyond just flapping or rocking! Looking at things in patterns, tapping or rubbing things, putting things in their mouth or biting things (like their collar, part of a necklace, stim toys, pencils, their hand, etc), humming or saying things under their breath
Unusual body language (flapping in different ways based on mood, bouncing when excited, slamming palms on desks when overwhelmed, ducking into shirt when upset)
Under or over exaggerating or difficulty with facial expressions or body language or eye contact
Echolalia or echopraxia - repeating phrases, picking up other people’s catch phrases or accents, copying other people’s movements
More comorbid disorders / symptoms. ADHD, specific learning disorders, tic disorders, OCD, anxiety, depression, synesthesia, prosopagnosia (face blindness), etc
Needing and getting accommodations for work or school and it not being a big deal or seen as a commentary on their character or abilities. (Possible school accommodations: extra time on exams, getting to take exams in a quiet environment, note taking services or assistance, being able to take a break if needed, being able to do an alternative assignment if something like giving a speech isn’t possible at the time)
Treatment or support. Therapy, occupational therapy, skills training, service or emotional support animals. No ABA, no trying to make them “normal,” no trying to train them out of their stims or force them to make eye contact; please stick to actual, helpful therapy to help them function as independently as possible or to be as happy and well adjusted as possible
It’s okay to include a mixture of accepting one’s symptoms and diagnosis (and acceptance from others) and frustration, embarrassment, or difficulty with some symptoms (and others potentially judging the character for symptoms, not understanding symptoms, or being an ass about something without realizing that they’re talking to someone with autism who has that symptom)
Please vary symptom severity! Most of us are more bothered by some symptoms than others and don’t have all possible or even all common symptoms but still really struggle with some particular symptoms. “High functioning” or “low functioning” doesn’t adequately describe most of us
Science / math / technology special interests are okay, just don’t be stereotypical about it. We’re not Rain Man, just STEM geeks
We can be verbal but still struggle to begin conversations or fall back on stock phrases (like “I don’t know”) or echolalia when stressed. We might struggle with being either too formal or too informal or not know how to talk to people who we shouldn’t be too formal or too informal with
Many of us can use sarcasm and metaphors. That may not look like when an allistic person does it (ex, may announce sarcasm immediately after, may be bad at giving off any cues that something was sarcasm and then being confused when it’s taken seriously)
Some try hard to blend in. Some of us have an extreme aversion to doing anything “just because” and so struggle with social norms
We can flirt! We can be seductive! We may not understand it and may learn it as a social thing and do it by accident in situations where we really should not, but that’s okay!
Not being able to predict what sensory issues will be a problem on any given day, sensitivity varying with stress levels, etc
In addition to no animal comparisons, no robot comparisons or bird comparisons. We may feel like aliens or otherwise nonhuman due to confusion and alienation, but we are human and shouldn’t be portrayed as otherwise
Autistic family members. Autism runs in families. It has nothing to do with vaccines
Autistic friends! We’re likely to get along with other people like us, though we won’t get along with every autistic person that we meet for the sheer fact that they have autism
WE’RE NOT INSPIRING JUST FOR EXISTING OR DOING THINGS MOST PEOPLE CAN DO, THANKS
