“no. it’s cool. i get it. i just didn’t know how you felt, or if you were even single. you know? right? it’s pretty fun, but it can get a little crazy. i love miami. that’s where i was born, but here i am. i love to go back and visit my family. south beach is amazing. yeah! they’re the only whale to not have a dorsal fin, so they don’t hit the ice. you should try out assisting teachers or working at camps or something. seaworld has an educational program for kids over the summer. maybe, i can put a good word in for you. you’ve been to mango’s?! i love that place!

“well, that’s not really what i meant, but yeah. i would like for it to be a date. that would be cool. really? you should make your way down there. it’s like a completely different place. you’d never know you were in florida. beluga whales are the biggest vapers of all. i love that movie! the whole sleep walking nude part is so funny! i’ve been doing it for about a year. how long have you been doing what you do?”

“no. i really don’t mind. i’d love to go on a theme park date with you, sometime. you know? yeah. i know the aquarium in key west has a touch tank where you can feel a living sea star. that’s what they’re called, by the way. they’re not fish, so no more starfish. it’s sea star. bubble rings... um. you know how those cool kids vape and blow smoke rings. it’s like that but with air underwater. it’s pretty cool. maybe, i could take a crack at it. what kind of animal is milo? thanks. i guess you have to be.”

“Well, nothing’s stopping you from going to see Rosco again after your shift is up. I mean, the raise sounds great and working with any kind of animal is a bonus. But I do understand the sadness of leaving a friend. Maybe if you bring him fish- does he eat fish?- he’ll forgive you for leaving?”

“you know... i never really thought about that. he’d be happy for me to get the raise. he wants what’s best for me. i think i’ll take it. yeah. he eats fish. he likes squid better, but i think he’d be happy to get a fish. he’ll understand. what do you do?”

“probably ‘cause i don’t have the money for a ticket? i’d love to go one day though, i’ve been dying to see all the harry potter stuff. i’d totally geek out and run around waving a wand or something. well, that’s disappointing. where would i find a starfish at the beach then? do whales do tricks like dolphins do? i’m…asking a lot of questions, i’m sorry. you’re just really into all this ocean stuff and i dunno, it’s really cool. i love hearing what people are passionate about.”

“that definitely stands in the way. i got a pass, so... we’ll have to go. i think i can trade out tickets or something, and get a free ticket. i’ll check it out. you would have to go pretty deep to see a big starfish. they usually get too beaten up in the tide, because they’re so fragile, you know? they don’t really do tricks, because they don’t have a need for tricks. they’re not in a show. they’re taught to blow bubble rings. that’s pretty cool. no! it’s cool. i think it’s awesome that you’re into it. a lot of people don’t like to talk about it, so i appreciate it.”

“i work as a trainer over at seaworld. yeah! he’s a sea lion that was assigned to me. i love that movie. it’s sad, but cute. i’d rather watch that than frozen, honestly.”

“yeah, of course i would! it’s a theme park, right? now that i think of it, i haven’t really gone to many of the parks here. my parents never really took me places that weren’t ‘educational’ which is weird considering we lived in party central. i can see you having a pretty sick time on a cruise- maybe you’ll meet some more sea creatures or something when you dock on one of the islands! i’ve always wanted to see a starfish in the little tide pools but i never seem to find either. — that sounds like it’d be fun! are you at least a little bit excited?”

“we have to go theme park hopping. they’re so much fun. why aren’t we at universal right now? what are we doing? florida doesn’t have a lot of tidepools, because we don’t have a rocky coastline for the water to be trapped in. no. yeah. i’m pretty excited. it’ll be something new. i’ve never worked with them before. i’ve worked with dolphins, so it’s pretty much the same.”

“it’ll be fun. i’ll make the best of it. getting in and out of that water is going to be so shitty. i think the water at pacific point sucks... they keep the beluga tank at around fifty degrees. i’ll have a dry suit on. i’m not worried. what’s up with you?”

“i wish i knew half of the stuff you were talking about but i have yet to pay seaworld a full visit but…i’m a little sad for you. i know how much you cared about the sea lions. but if you need the money, a pay raise could definitely be good for you, y’know? and it’s not like you’ll never see rosco again. what does being a beluga whale person entail, exactly?”

“really? we have to go. after all, don’t you want to see where i work? i know you do. trick question. yeah. i think it’ll be good for me. i could definitely use the money. maybe, i can save up for a cruise or something. well, seaworld has a beluga encounter program. guests can swim with the belugas, and all that good stuff. plus, you train the whales for basic husbandry and enrichment.”

”so... today, i got some pretty mixed news. it’s really bittersweet. while i was cleaning pacific point preserve, one of my managers called me in for a meeting. they want to promote me. it’s a raise in pay, which is awesome. i just don’t know if i really want to leave my buddies. i love the sea lions, you know? they want to move me to the beluga whale encounter. it’s kind of a bummer. i’m going to miss my buddy rosco.”
