         a  sparkle.   something  on  the  roof,    something  just  out  of  reach   ---      it  grabs  her  interest  and  pulls  her  forward.   excitement  as  bright  as  the  sun.   she’s  smiling,   grinning,   full  of  happiness  as  her  curiosity  climbs  her  up  the  wall  by  the  docks.   she  could  use  the  stairs,    couldn’t  she!?   no,   of  course  not.   vanille  was  hardly  a  normal  girl.   it’s  another  abnormality  that  snatched  her  away,   someone  called  to  her...   oops!   she’s  falling,   falling...   flat  on  her  back!   normally,   a  girl  her  age  would  cry  or  throw  a  fit...   but  instead,   she’s  grinning  bright  as  ever!   that’s  the  weird  guy  everyone  talks  about,   right!?   and  he’s  talking  to  her!     “    hiya!    ”     spoken  almost  like  the  chirp  of  a  young  bird.   it’s  hard  to  say  there  isn’t  a  similarity,   given  how  she  always  looks  for  worms  to  eat  every  day...     “    i  was  tryin’   to  get  a  thing  all  the  way  up  there!   i  saw  it   ---    i  dunno  what  it  is,    but  i  saw  ‘em!    ”   a  giggle,   the  girl  in  question  hops  to  her  feet  without  a  care,   dusting  off  her  clothes  and  bounding  towards  the  masked  man.     “    i  don’t  see  you  around  very  much.      are  you  the  hidey  kinda  type?   oh,   since  you’re  here,   d’you  wanna  play  hide  and  seek?    ”

❛   careful, vanille.   ❜   he calls out when she strays too far and trips when her foot hits a step they began to venture up. but it went without saying that she was fully capable of taking care of herself, dimitri knew he had nothing to worry about when she was … burning the energy she has kept in for the whole morning. but slowly he could notice her movements slowing down bit by bit as they were nearly to the dorms,    ❛   perhaps we should take a moment …  ❜   with his suggestion, dimitri guided her to the bench and once he sat down, he humored every exclamation, every joke, and every question she had for him. 

though, what he was expecting wasn’t the child to suddenly lean against his side, the furs of his cloak making it a much more enjoyable cushion that the armor he wore underneath. she probably would’ve complained about that, he thought to himself, though, he was even unsure of that. vanille was an absolute wonder in everything she did. a glance over towards her, he couldn’t help but gently sigh. it was a hassle to shift without waking her, but he managed and carefully did he begin to walk once more, carrying her off to marianne’s room. please let her be there … he thought to himself.   |   @diezle

1! ♡     i’ve been absolutely in love with magical starsign since i was around maybe 8 years old? and it took me years to beat the game because of how it’s an rpg and it requires you to grind which... baby me didn’t understand and i’d often get stuck at a lot of the puzzles... but! i didn’t use a guide at it for all and that’s what made me really cry once i reached the end. it’s because the game really did feel like a bigger journey for me than the game actually has. i don’t wanna write this as a separate fact but unfortunately all my favorite games have been obscure

     energy —–  the drive to do more,  make more of fleeting days.  into bitter hours of the morning,  that’s where she finds her energy.  fueled and goaded further by warriors and companions alike who draw from the same pool of ambition as she  ( though not to the same degree  /  never  to the same degree )  with the chants of war,  songs of battle the only symphony to their preparation.  this energy,  she finds comfort in.     childlike vitality  found in the thrums of excitement of such trivial things as the unknown,  a naivety that surpasses her grandest imagination:  it is foolish.  azula regards the other with a grimace backed by as much scrutiny as vanille likely fortifies her smiles and wide-eyed animation.

                    “  what is it that you find such keen interest in so late in the evening?  will you never tire,  no matter what the palace staff shows you?   ”     —–  much more than she would others,  the princess dignifies her with conversation at the very least.  there’s a background sense of curiosity that grabs hold to the tail ends of her words and follows what she would never ask ty lee regardless of how similar their surface-level personalities may seem at first.

          childish  wonder,   smile  unending  and  a  girl  who  bounced  about  with interest.   what  drove  azula  was  a  stark  contrast  to  vanille   ---   the  girl  who  was  driven  by  adventure  and  mystery.   palace  walls  and  pillars  which  fill  each  hall;   doorways  and  rooms  which  bring  those  same  grins.   she  laughs,   she  squeals,   she  sees  new  sights  and  people  and  it  takes  all  her  power  not  to  shout  and  bombard  them  with  questions.   it’s  these  times  that  the  mage  felt  full  of  life.   it’s  these  moments  that  show  how  little  those  lessons  her  father  gave  her  in  manners  had  impacted  her.

          it’s  that  question  that  brings  her  to  a  screeching  halt,   her  body  whipping  around  to  face  the  royalty  before  her  and  make  her  blink  in  surprise.     “    what  i’m  interested  in?    ”     a  loaded  question  to  her;   too  much,   too  many  things  to  answer  with  that  it  makes  her  laugh.   not  at  azula,   no,   but  at  what  she  could  answer  with.     “    weeeeeeeell,   i  haven’t  been  in  a  whole  lotta  castles  before.    ”     heels  rocking  back,   forth,   back,   forth.     “    and  i’ve  never  been  in  such  a  pretty  red  one,   either!   the  castles  i’ve  been  in  were  all...   well,   one  was  suuuuper  gloomy  n’  made  be  all  sad  and  stuff,   but  the  other  was  all  bright  and  gave  me  a  headache!    ”     vanille  laughs  again,   bubbling  over  with  joy  and  excitement.     “    this  one’s  nice!   feels  all...   angry  n’  stuff.   i  think  my  friends  would  think  this  one’s  all  scary,   but  to  me?    ”     beaming,   brighter  than  before.     “    it  brings  back  a  looooootta  memories!   good  ones,   bad  ones...   all  of  ‘em!    ”     

          it’s  a  few  seconds  after  all  she’d  said  that  azula’s  expression  hits  her.   a  face  she  recognizes  from  the  enemies  she  had,   a  face  that  would  alarm  her  if  she  wasn’t  so  used  to  it.   for  a  moment,   a  blank  look  replaced  what  was  there.     “    ... ‘n  yeah,   i  don’t  think  i’m  gonna  be  tired  yet.    ”     almost  as  if  responding  to  it,   stepped  towards  her  with  head  bobbing  side  to  side.     “    do  you  have  any  kinda  memories  like  that?     ”     an  innocent  question   /   the  light  returning.     “    like  a  color  or  a  place  that  makes  you  remember  a  time  that  made  you  smile!    ”

what makes vanille smile?

          EVERYTHING!          everything, everything, everything makes her smile and it’s harder to decipher what doesn’t make her smile because it’s easy to say that her default expression is smiling. she smiles when she’s happy, smiles when she’s content, smiles when she’s bouncing off the walls and having the time of her life. she smiles when she flies her ship, smiles around her spaceship, around her friends and she makes sure they see her grin when they’re fighting. she’s sweet, she’s caring, she’s charismatic and has an air to her that screams “follow me!” she’s a presence that brings people together and her smile is a factor to it all. she can’t help but laugh and it’s a bane of hers   —   it’s a bane that she smiles so much. surprise makes her smile drop for a moment and that’s all. death brings surprise. she tries to cheer up her friends when those around her die but she can’t do anything, can’t feel what they feel, can’t find the horror as awful. she treats life like it’s nothing and it’s that near-nihilism that keeps her smiling; her hedonistic nature continues to fill her with the joy of finding new things and she collects friends wherever she goes to keep her happy. she smiles, smiles, smiles, smiles, and never stops until her body’s clock does. it’s only when something goes horribly, horribly wrong that she’d ever stop smiling for more than a moment.
