Title; Sick Bastards (Written in first-person narrative) (Released 18 January 2014) Author; Matt Shaw
A post-apocalyptic novel about a family, your family, trying to survive following a ‘nuclear attack’ on the world.
The book starts off with an extremely graphic sex scene, in which you are one of the partaking parties. Then comes the first shocker…the first of many…
You’re taken down the path of how it was when you first woke up in this place. You wake up, not knowing your name, age, where you are or anything, in fact, about your life previous to the right here-and-now. You are simply a member of a family; ‘Mother’, ‘Father’, ‘Daughter’ and ‘Son’. Welcome to your new world!
You soon realize that there are many things that a family will do to survive. It becomes apparent that, whilst life inside your home is not great, life outside your home is not as rosy as you may think either. With dangers lurking around every corner from the minute you step out of your front door, you are left with a choice to make – go and find help or stay at home with the protective but somewhat vicious and abusive ‘Father’.
Twists and turns throughout the book leave you feeling betrayed, abused, belittled and slightly turned on (in a VERY sick sort of way). When you realize that everything may not be as it seems, you’re left with another choice to make – one where you have to decide if you can carry on living this way, with all the horrific things you have done or whether you need to put an end to it all.
In summary; an extreme novel that lives up to its name. Sick Bastards is one of those ingenious books that is both beautiful and utterly disgusting at the same time; a Jimmy Saville children’s party would raise less eyebrows!!! A highly recommended read for any horror and gore fans.
Rating; 8.5 / 10
