remus lupin, to @aredhels happy birthday, sari!!
“you can exist without your soul, you know, as long as your brain and heart are still working. but you’ll have no sense of self anymore, no memory, no … anything. there’s no chance at all of recovery. you’ll just — exist. as an empty shell. and your soul is gone forever … lost.”

I want to understand how people love ron so much? When he was such an arse??
Have you never felt inferior to your friends? They’re so smart and clever and talented. Wished that you were as brave or as carefree? That you feel never quite as normal as they seem to be.
Have you never had an argument with your friends? Never had a disagreement that no matter what you both just cant see eye to eye? And it makes you mad because its so obvious to you, but why can’t they see it? You care, you care so much you’d fight back. Only to realise you fought too strong and regret getting heated and should have just agreed to disagree.
Have you never done something you wish you hadn’t and let that shame eat at you? You run away from the people that love you because you can’t bare to face their possible disappointment.
Have you never gone against your better judgement for your friends? Never questioned their actions but took a deep breath because you trust them despite your instincts. You’d dive into the unknown because they’re worth the adventure - the troubling times just as much as the fun lazy ones.
Have you never loved someone so fiercely you’d do anything for them? Even if you’re not on good terms, even if everyone’s against them? You’d defend and love them anyway? Because your friends are your family and are so incredibly important you feel like you’d die for them?
Thats only a fraction of Ron Weasley. And he deserves so much more love from this fandom. Ron is a great best friend and I fail to imagine how anyone can’t see a little of themselves in him.
imagine reading the Harry Potter series, seeing Harry being moody and lashing out at people left, right and centre, Hermione being ruthless and judgemental towards basically everyone who isn’t an authority figure and then choosing to single out Ron as being the only one worthy of being called an ‘arse’? Ron continues to be the least intentionally rude and disrespectful character of the trio by far.
^this!
Like, if you line up the ‘bad things’ each of them did- Ron’s are little teenage bullsh!t things-
While Harry has done two unforgiveable curses. Hermione has kept a living woman in a jar and permanently disfigured people.
Like… Ron’s the problematic one?
YES! EXACTLY! Ron is easily the least problematic of the trio. And yet he receives the most hate from the fandom. The mind boggles…
I've come to believe that it’s because Harry and Hermione’s are praised several times throughout the books in print. Hermione is called smart and clever every time she speaks. Harry is called brave every time he pulls out his wand, Ron, isn’t. We see his cleverness, bravery, and brilliance throughout the books but his actions aren’t pointed at call called what they are by name.
“Look! right here it says Hermione is the smartest witch of her age! I have receipts! Right there on the bottom circled in red and signed by JKR ‘Hermione is Smart’’. And here! Here is the receipt of Harry’s bravery! also circled in red and Signed by JKR. ‘Harry is Brave!’
And here’s Ron’s receipts… NO red circle explicitly telling me how I should view Ron! If Ron was smart and brave JKR would have told us the way she told us how smart and brave Harry and Hermione are. It means Ron’s not worthy of praise! otherwise, she would have taken the time to circle and sign the receipt. And if he’s not worthy of her time he’s not worthy of mine. If he’s not worthy of my time he’s not worthy of Hermione. And if he’s not worthy of Hermione, who JKR told me was smart and kind, That means he’s stupid and means! It’s canon. I have handwritten recipes collected from fanfictions on how horrible Ron is.”
“Those receipts aren’t canon OR circled and signed by JKR.”
!!! THIS!
Like, YES! YES, YES, THAT’S WHY -
We have SO many fudgin’ times where Harry and Hermione are praised in the very text… But what does Ron ever get?
You’re the most insensitive wart I ever had the misfortune to meet.
Way to “not be rude”, Hermione
Just because you have the emotional range of a teaspoon doesn’t mean we all have.
AND PEOPLE TOOK HER SERIOUSLY LIKE WHAT THE FUCK THIS IS THE ASOCIAL THAT WOULD WASTE AWAT IN HER LIBRARY IF RON DIDN’T EXIST
But he can be a bit unkind.
Luna I think you’re missing a very important fact She. Set. Birds. On. Him. WHO’S THE UNKIND ONE IN THAT CASE???
Rowling goes out of her way to NOT praise Ron’s qualities. The only time it happens, it’s at the end of Deathly Hallows, when Hermione says “He was brilliant!” and Harry exclaims “Genius!” and even then Ron just goes “Oh y’know it was nothing” HHHHNNNNGGGGG
Of course, it ties with all of Ron’s character arc. The fact that he’s unappreciated. Underestimated. Invisible.
But just because “Hermione is smart” it means that everything she says is absolute truth and “Harry is brave” it means that nobody is allowed to be against him.
There’s actually a league of Hermione-worshippers who say “Hermione is allowed to do unethical things because she was doing them for the war effort”
Oh, you mean like when she Confounded McLaggen (which could have led to him falling from his broom), THAT was the war effort? The canaries were for the war effort? Hell, even branding Marietta FOR LIFE, that’s a necessity of war?
Puh-freaking-lease.
GREAT point @pynki!!! Like, OMG- you nailed it. THAT’S why people don’t get it- They need it to be SO SPELLED OUT. Then the movies took away so much of his character- that it shifted their views even more in the books. They were reading being very much influenced by the movies- and thus- it’s easy for even more readers to be biased to think that Ron is a cowardly silly sort of person- when he’s brave, sardonic, filled with common sense (Except with girls- but I think that’s due to insecurity and general ‘he’s a teenager- everyone sucks at romantic crap at that age’) - Like… Ron is my bean. Do not touch.
And @vivithefolle yikes- I forgot about some of those quotes of Hermione’s (the wart one) man… Like, there’s playful banter. I call my husband an a-hole all the time- but we’re laughing and nudging eachother. She’s pretty dang lucky Ron is a sweetie who takes ribbing, and plain ol’ disdain, better than anyone. He’s insecure as hell- but frankly, he handles the harsh ‘teasing’ and plain old meanness he receives from Hermione, Fred and others pretty well, all things considered.
The saddest part might be because he thinks that they’re just saying the truth and he just thinks “haha, yeah, I guess I do have the emotional range of a teaspoon”.
Which kills me emotionally everytime.
^ I’ve thought that too, I try not to though because it rips my heart out 😭

Romione still - Deathly Hallows part I screencap
Ron Weasley offered the stranger sitting next to him on the train half his sandwich, even though it was all he had.
Ron Weasley sacrificed himself for the good of Harry and Hermione at ageeleven, because even then he thought they were more important than he was, and the ones worth saving.
Ron Weasley was Harry Potter’s first friend, and the first thing Harry ever had resembling a family.
Ron Weasley lived in a cramped house, and wore hand me down robes, and he didn’t even think twice about offering his room and food and family to Harry every break, he offered him every thing he could and gave him everything he had.
Ron Weasley took care of Harry Potter and Hermione Granger when they were too busy taking care of the rest of the world to worry about themselves.
Ron Weasley stood on broken bones when he was thirteen years old, to tell a man infamous for murder that if he planned on killing his best mate, he would have to go through him first.
Ron Weasley was the person Harry would miss most in the world.
Ron Weasley was a pureblood wizard who, from a very young age, devoted hislife to abolishing blood status, even if he didn’t quite understand his own privilege.
Ron Weasley’s greatest fears and insecurities were tied up in his two best friends seeing him the way he saw himself. They were tied up in the idea, imbedded deeply in Ron Weasley, that he was somehow inferior.
Ron Weasley gave Dobby his own clothes and socks to be buried in, because he understood how important it would have been to him.
Ron Weasley thought about saving the house elves when everyone else forgot.
If you don’t love Ron Weasley, The Boy Who Cared, I don’t know what booksyou read but they weren’t the same ones I did.
