I’ve talked to quite a few people who aren’t aware of the situation in southern Louisiana right now and it’s common knowledge for us folks down here that it’s not being covered too well by national and international media. But – it’s bad. It’s very bad. This is our second flood this year and places that have never flooded before have been devastated, places that are just now recovering from the last one are being devastated again. Everyone I know has either lost something or lost everything. To put it into perspective: 

According to statistics, Louisiana received 6.9 trillion gallons of rain between Aug. 8 and 14. Apparently that’s enough to fill more than 10.4 million olympic-size swimming pools. 75% of my home parish alone has been declared a total loss. In that same parish, 105,000 citizens lost everything in the flood. According to the 2015 census, there are only 137,788 citizens in that parish altogether. And that’s just one of the affected areas.  So far, the death toll has hit 13 and more than 20,000 people along with pets have been rescued and shelters are full. Louisiana needs all the help it can get. We are taking good care of each other, yes, but the more people who know the more help we’ll receive. it’s two thousand and sixteen but sometimes, when you’re taking out the trash and you hear unfamiliar music drifting from the house next door, it doesn’t really feel like it. you’re also not entirely sure if that’s a shadow of a person or a tree so once you shove the bag in, heart pumping, your press your tongue to your teeth and you don’t stick around to see. rubber soles to cement. door open, door closed. one silent, heavy sigh. safe.  forks clink against glass plates, red wine mingles with red lips, your baby brother tries to grab your attention but you can’t break character, you can’t let him know he’s right – he’ll learn, after all, as he gets taller, as his voice deepens, as he joins the football team and ignores the creeping discomfort in the back of his girlfriend’s father’s car. you all eventually learn. like glimpsing a note passed from hand to hand in the back of a classroom or like tuning into whispers you weren’t supposed to hear, you never asked to know it but there it sits – in the corner of your room, under the fourth step to your basement, behind your shower curtain, floating in the reflection of the ripples in your pool.  one day, you might dare to speak it aloud. one day, you might stand in the middle of the street and scream. dear rest of the world, you’d begin – SOMETHING ISN’T RIGHT IN SUBURBIA.

I am… not a chronologically locked rp blog.
