i’ll eat my hat if the next weeks or months prove me wrong but i genuinely don’t think they ever cared about telling an in depth story about emotional abuse re lisa and becky.
i think they just wanted to portray becky as someone who was generally bad™️ and the opposite of carla (meaning dressed badly and uncaring) so that the fans had nothing to get attached to or feel threatened over and sure, maybe so that she could stop haunting the narrative. they put zero effort in making becky a complex, interesting villain (obviously it’s not the actress’ fault), zero effort in giving us a well thought backstory for her and lisa’s marriage and for whatever she was doing for those four years and zero effort in portraying the (what should’ve been a very emotional) aftermath of those hellish four months that broke lisa and carla (and betsy) individually and as a couple/family.
ultimately, i think a lot of depth came from the fans who sometimes read between the lines (the general idea of manipulation and coercion was there) and sometimes made up entire headcanons that i don’t think the show had ever thought about and will ever showcase, unfortunately.
i am not mad bc it is what it is and ultimately i am happy to move on and forget this storyline whose execution i personally hated if they wanna forget about it too (alternatively i am happy to revisit it if one day they’ll wanna give it more depth). but i do find it a bit absurd to choose to dismantle a whole character’s beautiful arc (lisa’s grief) just for shock value and have your actors say that this is a story about abuse (!) and do almost nothing to give the depth a storyline and a topic like this deserved and leave the fans to pick up on crumbs and connect the dots (mind you, we still have a big portion of the GA thinking lisa was just a cheater who wanted to get back with becky and they can’t all be media illiterate, something must’ve gone wrong somewhere) lmao
