Michael J. Schumacher’s 2002 artist statement on the website of the Foundation for Contemporary Arts is a very succinct summary of his aesthetics:
"I am interested in context, in defining boundaries and not crossing them. A piano piece is one thing, a sound installation another. The forms are different, the audience is different. The time, the place, it all has to be taken into account. Ultimately, we’re all collaborating with whomever’s participating."

“For me, composing is listening.”
“I think a lot about listening; for me, composing is listening and so it’s how you listen and how you respond to the potential meaning in a sound. I think that what’s become really interesting since Cage is how much you can do in that regard: how and where you can find meaning; how you can juxtapose meanings; how you can suggest resonances beyond sonic resonances to real life associations. This explosion of meaning also includes pre-Cage sound—the relationship between a D and an A, or a D and B-flat. That also has meaning. What’s so exciting about making music now is you’re really—I don’t want to say manipulating, because I don’t try to manipulate meaning. I try to suggest ways that listeners can explore meaning.”

According to its songwriter, Michael Schumacher…
“‘Brisé,’ written for choreographer Liz Gerring, features bits of glass, hanging like a mobile from strings, for part of the percussion track, the recording of waves—recorded on a trip to San Francisco—and a field recording of children in a playground in Berlin.”
And according to director Azazel Jacobs…
"Brisé" played in a loop from a small speaker while we made this video. We - cinematographer Tobias Datum, actress Debra Winger, and myself - had few preconceived ideas of what would occur during the shooting, but it felt far from being free form. The song itself, already loaded with story, has such a strong sense of place and particular grounding that it felt more like being led, than trying to find our way.
We started at the beginning. Syncing up the sound of water with an image of it literally forced us to be on the same track. We began raising questions while simultaneously shooting; Who is this woman? How long has she been here? Where is she going…? We trusted the music to reveal any needed answers, all we had to do was listen.
I’ve never had a chance to work this way - to tell a story from the score, rather than the usual opposite. I believe it's a testament to the song, to the work of diNMachine, that the tables could be turned so and that I am still walking away with the feeling of making something personal. The woman that Debra so beautifully brought to life, and Tobi was able to capture, is someone that I feel I now know. She will remain on my mind, wondering whether this is a story of her survival or her destruction. Perhaps, it's more similar to the definition of "Brisé": (something I have only thought of looking up now) a ballet movement in which the dancer jumps off one foot, beats the legs together, and lands on both feet.
Ah. So she makes it.

diNMachine’s The Opposites of Unity is probably unlike anything you’ve heard before, but in a good way. The aptly titled release takes listeners on what at first appears to be a disjointed exploration of noise. But with a little deeper effort, the complexities of sound clearly come together to sew something symphonic by cascading modern technologies atop a classical foundation. –Indieminded

diNMachine bridges gap from 90's club music to the bleeding edge of electronica
Known for their amoebic rock grooves and sonic experimentalism, NYC’s diNMachine never disappoint with their wild electronic musical leanings. Adding turntable impresario DJ OLIVE to the (re)mix makes for an even more intoxicating network of sounds, landing somewhere between Aphex Twin and Diplo. The use of Dubstep and other contemporary techniques makes this track feel like a cultural touchstone of sorts, bridging the gap from 90′s club music to the bleeding edge of electronica. The DJ Olive remix is the first one off the upcoming cassette release, Sang Gween Remixes, from diNMachine, which includes 10 remixes of the single by different DJ’s from around the world plus the original song. The cassette will be released on September 23 by Greedy Dilettante Records.
