About Rex Raptor

Rex Raptor is a former competitive duelist, who stepped away from tournaments and never really looked back. He's still an obsessed idiot with dinosaurs, still collects Duel Monsters dinosaur cards, still has a lot of opinions-- he just doesn't care about the spotlight anymore. These days he's more likely to be found playing guitar, wandering the city at night, or quietly existing somewhere he probably shouldn't be. He's rougher around the edges, blunt without trying to be overly cruel, and a lot more introspective than most people expect. Once he was loud, arrogant, obnoxious, and angry. Now he's mostly just tired, and fed up with wasting his energy on things that will never matter. Don't rush me. I'm an adult with a real life, and limited energy.

Multi-para/Novella, third person preferred. My average word count is between 500 and 1000 and I regularly break discord's character limit.

I don't expect my writing partners to match length, just give me something to work with.

Rex’s smirk flashes off and on, like he hasn’t fully decided how honest he’s willing to be about it yet. He eventually starts typing, anyway.

[TXT]: nah second place just flipped a switch

[TXT]: went from “this is fun” to “i should be winning”

There’s a pause, like he’s hesitating on the next part.

[TXT]: got loud about it

[TXT]: … too loud

[TXT]: thought if i acted like i was better than losing, it’d stop happening

[TXT]: it didn’t stop happening

Rex lets out a quiet, mildly annoyed exhale.

Hey, go to sleep. I'll organize the stuff. You've been working all day. *hands him his deck* found this in your other bag, by the way.

Rex blinks down at the deck when it’s handed to him, like it takes a couple of seconds to fully register what he’s even looking at.

“... Huh.”

His fingers curl around it automatically, thumb brushing along the edge of the cards like muscle memory kicking in before anything else does. There’s a quiet pause where he just… Stands there, staring at it. For a second, it pulls something up– the heat of the arena lights, the weight of eyes on him, the familiar snap of cards hitting the field, dinosaurs towering proudly where they shouldn’t exist. Loud. Certain. Simple.

… It fades just as quickly.

Then his gaze shifts back up, eyes narrowing slightly– not exactly suspicious, but recalibrating.

“You always tell people what to do like that?” he mutters, the corners of his mouth twitching upwards faintly. There’s no actual bite to it. If anything, it sounds more like he’s stalling. His eyes flick back down to the deck, thumb tapping lightly against the side of it. “... Or am I just getting bossed around as a personal privilege?"

He exhales slowly, shoulders dropping a fraction. “... I wasn’t that tired.” He adds, quieter this time. The lie doesn’t land as clean as he wanted. His grip on the deck tightens just a fraction, like he’s anchoring himself to something familiar he thought he’d misplaced. “I just… I needed a minute.”

There’s another brief pause.

“... Thanks.”

“Woah! I didn’t see you there!”

Rex doesn’t move right away.

He’s already positioned there– leaned back against the side of the building, comfortable, like he’s part of it. One shoulder sits pressed into worn brick, boots scuffing faintly against the cracked pavement. The streetlight above flickers once, catching on the edge of his beanie before settling again, its weak glow drawing a slow orbit of moths that tap lightly against the glass. A loose scrap of paper skitters down the street with the breeze, dragging along the curb before disappearing into shadow. It’s the kind of quiet that doesn’t expect anyone else to be around disrupting it.

“... Yeah, that tracks.” He mutters, shoulders lifting in a light shrug like it’s not the first time someone’s said that to him. 

His gaze shifts over after a second, taking Ryou in without much urgency. Recognition flickers briefly across his face– faint, not completely emphasized. He’s seen them before, but can’t really recall if they’ve spoken.

“Didn’t mean to jumpscare you.” He adds, his voice low and casual. Not apologetic, just stating a fact.

He straightens slightly, pushing off the wall with a quiet shift. “... You usually out this late? Didn’t exactly peg you for a late-night type.” Rex asks, tilting his head just a fraction.

“So, apparently, the ‘bad vibes’ I’ve been feeling are actually ‘severe psychological distress’.”

Rex just stares at him for a second, expression completely flat.

"... That's not better." He mutters, tone blunt as ever. "If anything, that's significantly worse."

He shifts his weight, arms crossing loosely as his gaze narrows just a fraction. Not judgmental, just... Locking in. The typical sarcasm doesn't disappear, but it dulls around the edges, setting it off to the side a little instead of hiding behind it.

"You gonna keep calling it 'bad vibes'," he adds, tilting his head slightly. "... Or are we actually talking about this?"

The rooftop hums softly under him, gravel shifting faintly beneath his boots as Rex leans back against the low ledge. The city stretches out in thin streaks of gold and neon, distant traffic smearing into quiet lines of movement that don't ask anything from him. His acoustic guitar rests nearby, propped like it's waiting its turn, untouched. The vape pen glows briefly between his fingers before the smoke drifts out and away, thinning into the night air like it has somewhere better to be.

Down the alley, a pair of stray cats dart between dumpsters, one hissing sharply before vanishing into shadow. A crow shifts along a rusted awning nearby, claws scraping faintly against the metal. Somewhere further down the street, a car alarm chirps once, then again, before cutting off like it forgot why it started. A group spills out of a bar on the corner, laughter unreasonably loud for the hour, voices overlapping in a way that blurs into noise more than meaning. Rex hears all of it, but doesn't react. Just lets it pass through him, like background static he's accidentally learned to tune out.

"It really is good that you’re still here."

Recent words from a friend loops in his head. Not loud, just... Persistent.

Rex exhales slowly, eyes half-lidded as he watches the smoke dissolve. His thumb taps once against the pen, then stills. He could've left. That part honestly comes easy for him. He could stop replying. Stop showing up. Let things fade the way they usually do-- quiet, uneventful, like he never mattered enough for the absence to be noticed. Someone might go, "Huh, haven't seen Rex in a while." And then life just moves on.

... But he didn't.

His jaw shifts slightly, the thought settling somewhere behind his ribs where he usually doesn't let things sit for too long. It wasn't a big decision. No dramatic turning point. Just a series of smaller one's stacked together, from the occasional people that mattered.

Stay.

Stay.

... Stay.

"... Could've just ghosted." He mutters under his breath.

The words barely make it out of his mouth. He leans forward, resting his forearms against his knees, gaze drifting towards the guitar without reaching for it. There was a time when being loud felt like the only way to exist-- like if he wasn't constantly pushing, performing, taking up space, he'd just... Disappear anyway. Easier to burn bright, than risk not being seen at all.

But, this time? He didn't have to earn that. Didn't have to perform, or push, or be anything louder than what he already was. Just... Be there. Just be him.

And that, somehow, was enough.

"... Yeah."

Rex takes another slow pull, holding it for a second before letting it go, shoulders loosening as the thought settles into something quieter. Not questioned further. Not resolved. Just silently acknowledged. The breeze shifts, a bit colder up here, brushing through his hair as the sky stretches open and clear above the city glow. No clouds-- just a handful of stars stubborn enough to break through all the light pollution.

He leans back again, eyes drifting across the skyline, expression shifting to something more steady. A train horn echoes somewhere in the distance. The light in someone's window in a nearby building flickers on. The bar noise fades, replaced by quieter movement-- late shifts, night walkers, people existing within the margins of the city's sleep.

Yeah... He could've left.

He didn't.

"... I'm still here.”

Rex sits on the edge of a rooftop, one leg dangling, the other propped up. The city hums below him, distant and irrelevant. He takes a slow pull from his vape pen, the faint glow lighting his face before he exhales a white cloud into the night.

"Probably should be doing something productive."

He doesn't move. Just stares half-lidded towards the smoke as it drifts away into the warm air.

"... Seems optional at this point."

Rex sits stretched out across a worn park bench, one arm slung over the backrest while the other loosely holds a half-full cup of coffee between his fingers. He takes a slow sip, eyes half-lidded in a way that looks a little too satisfied for someone who's supposedly just "out for a walk." The corners of his mouth tug upward, subtle but unmistakable, like he's holding onto something he has absolutely no intention of explaining.

"... Yeah."

A quiet, amused exhale follows. Almost a laugh.

"I think I'm having a better day than most."
