Blog Post 10.1

1) Summarize your understanding of cloud computing.

My understanding of cloud computing is that it is a way of storing information on external servers, allowing for the information to be accessed from any place at any time.

2) Based on your growing knowledge about ICT’s, predict the kinds of tensions/issues that this new technology might raise.

The biggest issue of cloud computing may be privacy concerns. Because a company essentially has complete access to all the data you put on their server, a company could potentially manipulate and share the information with anyone they choose. Additionally, an issue that may arise is if a server farm goes down. This failure could lead to loss of valuable information.

As a new generation grows up with unprecedented access to high speed internet, I believe it is important to change the education model that has existed for the past 100 years. While this may seem drastic, I believe that all print resources should be done away and technology should be constantly incorporated into education.

The other day, I was writing a paper that required two physical print resources. I could not help but think how archaic this was, and that my teacher was essentially clinging to the past. Why print resources still are still so highly valued in academia is beyond me. I see no reason to go to the library and walk around searching for a book when a whole library is at my fingertips.

After our conversation in class, I only became more frustrated with the state of of copyright law in America. Throughout the discussion I repeatedly reflected on the principles of the remix manifesto. I love the principle that states "The past always tries to control the future." This phrase could not be any more true about United States copyright law. I feel as a new generation of internet users emerges, it is important to educate this generation in the idea of remix culture. While it goes against the last principle of the manifesto "Our future is becoming less free" I believe that the evolution of remix culture is inevitable, and instead of preventing it, teachers should encourage education of the topic.

The video R.I.P: A remix manifesto is a video that perfectly explains my belief of what the internet should be, and describes how archaic and uneducated current copyright policy in the United State is. While watching this movie, I could not help but become angry at the stupidity of United States copyright law. Founded upon greed, six major corporations control almost of the media in America and allow no one to build on their work. I love the explanation the narrator gives in the documentary: that song and video should be able to be used in the same way writing is, and authors should be able to cite and build upon previous work. Much like Girl Talk, the mash-up artist featured in the documentary, I will continue to fight idiotic copyright law by remix everything I can. After watching this documentary, I am inspired to remain a relentless remixer and not let the past control my future.

Briefly reflect on our discussion. Capture any new thoughts, insights, or questions that our reading and/or discussion inspired?

In our discussion during class today we went over the evolution of recording technology. I really enjoyed the history of sound recording because it's not something I was familiar with and too see how far this technology has come in the past 100 or so years is incredible. I especially found the video with Allen Parson's interesting. I recognized the name but i had no idea Parson's worked on Abbey Road as well as Dark Side of The Moon. Something else I found fascinating was the evolution of multiple tracks. I use garage band quite frequently (which allows for an unlimited number of tracks) and realized I took for granted the fact that I am able to use tracks so easily when others had to work at great lengths just to engineer a system to play 4 tracks. Overall I was super interested in our conversation today and I think audio recording is something I would enjoy learning as I move farther into the TAM program.

Today we discussed various technology services. The largest part of the conversation dealt with cloud computing and benefits as well as disadvantages/tensions were discusses. One thing I was thinking of in relation to server farms and cloud computing is exactly how often servers have to rip out their technology and replace it with more efficient and smaller technology. Additionally, I am interested in how soon server farms will be able to switch to SSD instead of HDD drives.

9.2 Blog Post

The crowd souring project I chose to participate in was Phylo DNA Puzzles (http://phylo.cs.mcgill.ca/#!/EN/about). The goal of Phylo is to solve the Multiple Sequence alignment problem through the use of an interactive game. Essentially Multiple Sequence Alignment can be used to track the origin of genetic diseases through evolutionary patterns. Traditional ways of using multiple algorithms to solve the Multiple Sequence Alignment have proved unreliable at times; but because humans have evolved to recognize patterns Phylo has created a way to use #crowdsourcing to solve to help solve the problem. This crowd sourcing project was actually really fun and stimulating. It basically feels like you are playing a game while simultaneously working out your brain. The game is pretty simple but has multiple difficulty levels for harder genetic patterns. I'm not a biology person at all but it felt great to get involved in an issue that could solve many genetic problems within the human race!

8.1 Blog Post

1. What kinds of new issues does digital technology raise with regards to what is public and what is private (social, political, personal, professional, ethical, legal, etc)?

What is defined as public and private is a huge issue as more and more technology comes out that allows us to share almost every detail of our personal lives. For example, the app Instagram recently came under fire for a clause in their policies that said the company had rights to use any images entered into their app for advertising purposes. Another issue that I have seen (that can be related to instagram as well as other social networking technology) is whether a person can get in trouble for posting pictures of illegal substances. While you cannot usually prove a person is using an illegal substance just by a picture, the argument may be raised if whether these people should be able to be investigated.

2) Before this class, how much attention did you give to your digital footprint? Will that change as a result of our discussions, readings, etc? If so, how?

I have always paid a lot of attention to my digital footprint. I often delete posts I make that do not accurately reflect my image of who I am as a person. However, I believe that after our discussion I will become much more aware of just how available some of my information is able to be found on the internet.

6.2 Blog Post (Photo Manipulation)

This blatantly manipulated photo ironically comes from advertisement for a professional photograph printing company. In the picture what appears to be the mother of a young girl is taking a picture of the two together. However, a mysterious hand appears on the woman's right shoulder: showing that someone (probably Dad) was cropped out in order to save space.

1.Summarize your understanding of cloud computing.

Cloud Computing is a way to store data in the "cloud." This invisible cloud is really a connection between external physical servers across the internet. With these external severs a person can access and store data while not requiring any hardware or software--just an internet connection.

2. Predict the kind of tensions/issues that it might raise.

I feel that the biggest tension this raises is what to do to explain servers in other countries. This is a prominent issue with the Swedish site "The Pirate Bay" because it allows users to access P2P files that would be illegal in other countries. However, because the servers reside in Sweden (a country with very liberal file sharing policies) the United States or other countries cannot do anything about it.

1. How have internet technologies evolved since the 1970's?

Internet technologies have evolved and have become exceedingly more complex while simultaneously retaining the end-to-end communication that started the internet. At the same time, the simplicity and public nature of the internet prevents a full collapse. I was engaged in our discussion today because I feel like we take it for granted that the internet is the way it is. If the internet had developed differently it could have become a solely business or military medium.

2. How do (and how might) these developments impact our ability to participate in future evolution?

These developments may impact our ability to participate in future evolution because as more and more conflicts emerge our internet freedom shrinks. At the beginning of the creation of the internet you could do almost anything but there has been trend that our internet freedom is shrinking.

Blog 7.2 (Online Profile Reflection)

1. In a few sentences, summarize your experience of searching for data about your partner.

Interestingly enough, I had a very difficult time finding information about my partner. My first step was to search for him on Facebook. I indeed found my partner but because he had the most strict privacy settings I was unable to see where he was from. The only thing I could glean out of the information available was that he went to CU and was affiliated with greek life. I tried other databases such as the public school records but because of how common my partner's name was I could not delineate between similar names.

2. Does the information your partner found reinforce or conflict with the image you have of yourself?

I would definitely say that the information my partner found reinforces the image I have of myself. I make most parts of my life available for anyone to see and the image my partner saw of me is one that I see myself.

3. How deliberate have you been about 'impression management' up until now?

I have been very deliberate. None of my online profiles have very strict privacy settings because I the image that I portray online is one that I am proud of people seeing. Although some may be offended or take posts and pictures that I have online the 'wrong way' I am not worried because those people who are offended I would neither want to work for or become friends with.

Where/how do you share photos/videos?

I share photos on instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. I share videos on vimeo and Facebook. I generally edit my videos with Final Cut Pro X.

Who is your audience for your photos/videos?

My family and friends who follow me on the various social networks I use.

To what degree are you concerned how 'private' or 'public' your photos/ videos are?

Not concerned at all; I generally share my pictures and videos publicly. The videos I edit are especially public in hopes that they they go viral.

How does technology influence and/or reflect cultural conceptions of truth/ reality?

I believe the most profound way technology influences society our conceptions of truth is that we have grown less and less trustworthy of images we see and if they are 'real' or not. Around the time of the inception of photography, almost everyone would believe an image as truth. However, after countless occurrences of fake and altered photos we have become less trustworthy of images. Personally, whenever I see an incredible photo online my first question is generally "is this fake?"

When/where/how often do you take photos (and videos)?

i take photos almost everyday with my iPhone and post them to instagram. In addition to taking photos every day I also believe I shoot a lot more video than most people on my Canon HF-30 HD.

What are your favorite photo (and video) subjects?

I love to shoot my friends just hanging out and doing what we do. Things get pretty crazy when we hang out and I have sort of made myself the historian for our group. I have video footage all the way back to high school

How important are your photographs to you? And if they are important, what makes them so?

Very important. To me, photographs are memories. Without certain photographs these memories in their truest form could be lost forever.

Do you consider photography to be an art form? Why or why not?

I do consider photography an art form. While it is easier than ever before to take a quality photograph, to take a good photo requires skill and vision.

Blog post for 4.2

1. Do you buy Carey’s argument that technology is tied specifically to managerialist/imperialist ideology? Why or why not?

I would say that I only partially agree with Carey's argument of technology being specifically tied to managerialist/imperialist ideology. While much of the technology we have today was developed by organizations and not by the majority of the citizens, these organizations have to adapt their technology to the will of the citizens in order to survive in a competitive market.

2. What impact did the readings/discussions about theory have on how you think about technology?

While I was not necessarily "wowed" by the readings in the sense of them changing my ideas, I do believe that I am more aware of the impact of managerialist ideology in the construction of technology. For example I feel that many people take for granted that certain technology is the way it is only because organizations have shaped it for their preferences; if the citizens were the directing force the technology could appear slightly different.
