Hello and Good Morning young Skywalker, You have many tasks before you, and time is not your ally. Should you choose to accept this mission, here are the details:

1) Inspect the progress of the condor jobs 2) Figure out how to properly run psigma_asym.py--that is, if you still think it a good plan 3) Print out all plots you think you will need for you thesis/dissertation 4) Finish those dang Asymmetry plots and start working on SDMEs 5) At the end of the day, if you HAVE NOT started on SDMEs write Alex the following email:        Dear Alexander,                I am writing you in a time of desperate need. It appears I am running                out of time and the dawn is drawing near. In this hour, I think it wise                  to write you, someone who has been a good friend, a good friend in                  deed. Could we correspond for an hour or two this Thursday, May the                25th, so that I could pick your brain on how to succeed in producing                  SDMEs post haste? Life has been grand, spending every waking                      moment glued to my computing machine, however, I fear without                      your help, I may not make it past June the 2nd.

I've spent the last week at the Canadian Light Source studying the crystal structures of diamonds. This was my first trip to the big Eh and I loved it. Part of my time here was spent without car and so I had to walk 10 miles to get some beer last night (beer is not cheap here as it turns out) and I made my way back with a Nalgene full of IPA. All in all a great trip. The artwork triptych is by Carol Wylie and hangs in the synchrotron residence hall.

RANT

It’s been a while since I’ve written anything on here and that’s partly because of how busy it’s been and not having a lot of free time. I have found that when I am extremely stressed out I tend to frequent tumblr more often, so I figured why not try writing a little? 

I’ve been given the one year flag from my advisor, which basically means he expects me to finish by next August. Not only that, but the diamonds project I have been working on for the past year has a deadline of September 15th, requiring me to produce 3 perfect samples. When the summer first started I thought to myself, “Self, you have plenty of time” and I was working and working on this new capability my advisor wanted us to have and then as soon I’m ready to test it out, BLAM!! Laser shits the bed. Not only that but my advisor made me go to this 3 week summer school for nerds right after it happened. 

I get back, fix the laser (which isn’t as easy as it sounds) and then attempt to test our new set up and BLAM, electronics are freaking out. Fix that, and then blam (slightly smaller blam) I have to mentor 2 high school students for 4 god damn shitty ass weeks. FINALLY they leave and then it’s time for the 1 week of vacation I get which was so nice. I didn’t want to go back. And I know that everyone says “haha yeah, I almost didn’t go back” but for the first time in a long time I was rethinking my choice to be in grad school. Letting me go outside was a mistake, because I forgot what trees were and what life is outside of a lab. Needless to say I wasn’t super stoked to come back. But hey, everything was sort of working when I left so it shouldn’t be too bad when I get back right? 

Nope, wrong, incorrect. The laser wasn’t putting out power, the program I wrote with Jones wasn’t working properly and now...right now...the stupid microscope that we use JUST TO LOOK AT THE LITTLE FUCKERS decided to have a temper tantrum and I spent the entire day debugging it. That, with moving to another new apartment, trying to get our security deposit back from our old landlord, not getting paid for the entire month of August, and learning I am going to have to be a full time TA next fall while trying to meet this absurd deadline has be a little stressed. But, I feel a little better now so thatnk you for that internet.

What's New?

1) I passed all of my pre-qualifying exams and have now entered the Ph.d program officially. Also, I received my masters degree

2) Started seeing someone awesome named Maddie, we are now living together...which is also awesome

3) Have drastically reduced all old bad habits. I mostly drink socially now, and only on the weekend otherwise. 

4) My oldest brother got married, the night before at the rehearsal dinner my younger brother and I got pretty drunk. I then apparently yelled at him to punch me....until he actually punched me in the face. I was battling some strep at the time, and the inflammation to my lymph nodes cause some kind of crazy reaction. I had a tennis ball sized lump on my neck for about 3 weeks...Five hundred dollars later, and a bunch of trips to the doc and I'm back to normal.

5) Matt moved away to California and I'm happy for him.

6) Japhy is doing great..in fact here's a sweet ass picture.

That's all I can think of for now. I'm just getting back into tumblr shape, give me a break.
