Masseur Toji takes care of you
You just wanted relief, looking forward to your massage appointment more than anything.

Working over ten hours a day chasing quarterly sales quotas made your shoulders feel less like they were made of muscles, and more like you consisted of compressed concrete. It got so bad that you counted down the days till you finally had time for your well-deserved full-body massage. There were times you felt tears building up from the discomfort of sleeping in your own bed, the strain becoming too much to bare.
Your first thought was to book an appointment to get proper medication for muscle strain. That plan was instantly shut down when you realised the doctor would've prescribed some herbal patches and ergonomic bullshit for posture. . Even though your stingy company provided good enough insurance for you to risk going to the orthopedic for a full examination, you just couldn't find comfort in taking medication over having a middle-aged woman with petite hands push through your skin. The thought was so painful in the best way possible.
In the middle of stupid deadlines and long hours, you had managed to quickly book an appointment. That itself was rewarding.
The receptionist had asked you to sit down and offered you some lemon water, informing you that someone would be with you shortly. You had simply closed your eyes against the waiting roomβs dim lighting, desperate for relief.
It was an intimate setting on the second floor of a residential building. The place was calm, unpretentious, away from any nose or chaos. The clicks of the receptionist could be heard only lightly along with the ambient music. The whole environment was tucked under warm lighting that casted a soft glow. The walls were similar to a charcoal colour with light oak accents. There were a few healthy and vibrant plants spilling over the mounted shelves.Β
It smelled of peace; a mix of eucalyptus, chamomile and mint. The scent signified one thing: sixty minutes of mandatory shutdown. Just the environment had taken out weeks of stress from your system, you were excited as ever for what the actual massage would do to you. Not even a bonus could make you as happy as what was waiting for you in one of those rooms β and that spoke volumes of your state.
The call of your name broke you from the daydream.
A low, smooth, and velvety voice made you open your eyes and look up. And up. And up.
Stood in front of you, a broad-shouldered man with jet-black hair, clean-cut features, and eyes that held some amusement. He wore the standard dark spa scrub top, but on his frame, it looked a bitΒ tooΒ tailored. His biceps were practically ripping through the sleeves of the top.
"I'm Toji" He said, stepping back to gesture down the softly lit hallway. "Let's get you to the room."
You blinked, your brain struggling to catch up through the fog of fatigue.Β As Toji turned and gestured for you to follow, you quietly did. Your brain was so fried from the client calls and corporate warfare that you couldn't process much beyond the sheer physics of the man walking in front of you. His broad shoulders tapered into a lean waist, he had as effortless stride, and a subtle scent of cedar and faint citrus trailed.Β
You didn't think that such places would have such attractive workers. He must have been an intern, or another front-desk assistant walking you to where your actual masseuse was waiting.
You walked down a narrow, dimly lit corridor lined with a soft carpet that swallowed the sound of your steps. Toji stopped at the last door on the left, pushing it open to reveal a dimly lit sanctuary. You almost moaned right there.
He stepped inside and gestured toward the padded table in the center, turning to face you.
You were, as much as you wouldn't admit it, so entirely consumed by his presence, that your usual razor-sharp observation skills simply went offline.
"Alright." He said, his voice dropping into that smooth, low register that seemed to vibrate right through your chest. "Iβll step out and give you a few minutes to undress. You can lay down on your back when you're ready, I'll knock before I come back in."
You stopped, completely coming back to your senses.
"I'm sorry?" You blinked, leaning slightly to make sure you heard him correctly. "I... um. AreΒ youΒ doing the massage?"
Toji raised an eyebrow, a lazy smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. It was subtle, but it radiated the confidence of a man who knew precisely how disarming he was. He may have been taking too much credit for the fact you couldn't process that a man was doing your massage, but some of it had to be given where it's due.
"Unless youβd prefer someone else?" He asked mildly. "Though, you specifically selected my profile when you booked at midnight nearly two weeks ago."
You felt heat spread across your cheeks.Β You had been half-asleep on your couch, suffering from pain around your shoulders and back, frantically tapping through the booking calendar. You must have clicked his name without realising.
"I- well, I was..." You stuttered, caught entirely off guard by everything. You must have not focused while booking. "I must have not checked properlyβ¦"
Toji paused, his dark eyes looking through yours. The teasing light in his expression softened just a fraction into something genuinely reassuring, though that low, dangerous warmth remained in his tone.
"If it's something you're not okay with, you can reschedule. Though, the ladies are maxed out for the weekend. You can book for Monday."
Monday. You almost laughed and cried simulatenously.Β
This was terrible. This was everything you had been looking forward to. It had been on your mind since you thought about getting one. There was no way you were going to wait a whole week for another appointment, since weekdays weren't even an option.Β
You bit your lip, thinking about all the possibilities. Toji took note of the sudden panic that overtook you.
"I promise you're in good hands." He said softly, leaning in just enough for you to catch a trace of the cedarwood. "My job is to fix your tension, not make you uncomfortable. But if you'd feel uncomfortable, I can check the front desk."
He didn't move away immediately. He just waited, completely relaxed, entirely aware of the sudden, rapid flutter in your head.
You had never done this before. In fact, the thought of getting a hand massage from a man felt way too uncomfortable. This whole session was all about the whole body, bare with just a panty clinging onto your modesty.
You swallowed hard.Β
Then you looked up at him.
There was something about him, something that didn't make you feel the discomfort of feeling violated. It was more his presence that grabbed your attention, but that was on you. His assurity only added to your decision.
Your body was throbbing with ache. Walking out meant going back to your apartment with your concrete body and crying yourself to sleep for another night because you couldn't settle in a position that soothed the muscle ache.
"No." You managed, recovering an ounce of your usual grit. "No, it's fine. Just... fix the shoulders, and the back."
"Consider it done." He murmured, his voice dropping an octave, laced with a quiet, cocky satisfaction. "I'll knock."
You closed the door, deep breaths as you began undressing.Β
The only reason you had shaved every inch of your body was to mask into the comfort of smooth skin after having everything lubed with oil and smelling of essential oils. It was sensible and rewarding. Yet now, a part of you was relieved. This was about to be something you were either going to come back for, or hit your head to try and forget.
Once everything, bar the black panties, was off and folded nicely on the table in the corner, you did your best to set the towel over your butt as you laid on your stomach.Β
Your whole being relied on deep breaths and the objective of muscle relief.
When Toji knocked and re-entered the room, your heart thumped a frantic rhythm against the massage bed as you lay face down.
"Comfortable?" He asked softly, his footsteps silent on the carpet.
"Yes." You spoke through the the hold of the face cradle, feeling goosebumps on your arms.
You heard the soft click of an oil bottle opening, followed by the sound of him warming the liquid between his palms. Every passing second felt heavy, you gulped again and took in a deep breath.
Then, his hands made contact with your upper back.
They were massive, broad, and radiating an intense, steady heat. He didn't rush. He pressed his thumbs firmly into the base of your neck, dragging them down the long, strained muscles beside your spine. The pressure was deep, clinical, and so agonizingly good that a soft gasp escaped your throat.
You let out a ragged breath you hadn't realized you were still holding.
"Focus on breathing." Toji instructed softly, his voice right near your ear as he leaned into the stroke. "You're holdin' your breath."
"I'm... fine." You choked out, pulse hammering. He could probably sense it.
"You're a knot of stress." He countered smoothly, a hint of playful mockery in his tone. "Work must be fun."
"Sales." You grunted as his palm swept over your shoulder blade, working to melt the tight fascia beneath his fingers.
"Ah." He murmured.
His hands were entirely professional, he stayed strictly within boundaries, moving with absolute precision and respect. Yet, the sheer sensory overload of his strength, the friction of his oiled hands, and the subtle yet teasing confidence in his touch made you feel completely unraveled.Β
Every time his forearms dragged down your back, you felt your composure dissolving. You held your breath, before breathing out again.
He worked his way down to your lower back, applying a long, heavy friction stroke that made your hips sink deeper into the padding. Every minute, an inch of the towel moved lower, exposing the black lace more and more.
You clutched the edges of the sheet and your breathing hitched again, feeling the cool air starting to graze your butt.
"You're tense here." He noted, his thumbs lingering at the small of your back, working in tiny, exquisite circles. "You need to let go."
"I'm trying." You whispered with a voice barely audible.
Toji chuckled, a low, deep rumble that seemed to echo through the walls. He knew exactly what he was doing to you. He was an absolute master of his craft, and he took insufferable pride in watching your corporate defenses crumble under his hands.
"Let me do the work." He whispered, leaning down just close enough that you felt the warm brush of his breath against your shoulder as his hands started getting lower, thumbs slowly digging into the muscles of your inner thighs. "Just relax."

Duke Sukuna has had Enough
Part 1: Duke Sukuna is Confusing
Part 2: Duke Sukuna is an Over-thinker
Not a day has gone by without him feeling guilt, and you were doing your part by creating further disparity. Your husband can't take more of the distance.Β

It was two days after Sukuna's arrival. It is the late afternoon and you were in the library. The sun will begin to set soon, and the shadows were slowly spreading over the desk.
The ledgers were all sprawled across the desk like a map during a battlefield. Having them opened in disarray had already spiked your frustration, but what really fuelled it was the man who was present with you, eager to re-establish his presence.
"The expenditure here is inefficient, my dear." He pointed to a row of figures, his voice smooth. You took note of his hand, a lot larger than yours, fingers lengthy and thick.
You did not look up, but your lips curved in a faint, knowing smile. "If you account for the seasonal rainfall patterns Iβve tracked for the last three years, the current expenditure is the only way to ensure the harvest remains stable, dear husband. Unless you want to lose the yield." You were already there with a counter-argument that was more precise, not letting him outsmart you. You may have many weaknesses, but nobody could outclass you when it came to basic mathetmatics β as if you hadn't already double-checked all the calculations.
Then, slowly, you looked up, your eyes challenging him. He was standing too close, you soon realised, leaning over your shoulder to have a look at the page.Β
He could smell the faint scent of old paper on your skin, and you could smell the strong scent of scandalwood all around you thanks to him hovering so close over you.Β
Sukuna gulped, feeling a sudden, sharp impulse to set the ledger aside and press his face into the curve of your neck, to stop you from bickering, to declare victory over the argument, to justΒ feelΒ you.
He stayed still, his broad body tense, hand hovering near where yours was on the desk. He did not touch you, he would not dare. He did, however let his fingers linger in that space just inches from yours. You watched inquisitively, stilled by the mystery of where his hands would go from there.Β
"You have been very thorough," He murmured, his voice dropping an octave.
"It is my duty to be." You replied in a cool voice, waiting, breathing, anticipating.Β
The ticking of the clock felt louder in those seconds; tick, tick, another tick. You let tick five more times before shifting your hand away and turning back to the books. The escape was subtle, but it was absolute.Β
It left him standing there, the air around him feeling suddenly thin and cold.
"If you have concluded your trial, I would like to tidy up. The maids will soon bring tea." You spoke, monotonously, closing each ledger one by one with utmost care. Sukuna watched, experiencing a new degree of frustration.
βββββββββββββββββ
A week after your husband's arrival, you two had been invited to the parish. As the primary patrons of it, you were expected to officially open the event, and partake in a few activities with the community.Β
It was the afternoon, and the air was heavy with the scent of all kinds of flowers, particularly lillies.Β
You smiled as you bent foward, handing out a prize to the little girl, around five years of age, for bring well-behaved at school.
Β "Smile, Your Grace," You slipped out while smiling, one that did not reach your eyes.Β
Sukuna had his arm hooked through yours as both of you walked among the local parishioners. Lady Shiro was hovering nearby, eyes like a hawk, waiting for a crack in your facade. She may be a thorn amongst the flowers, but her lady instincts were unfortunately, alarmingly accurate for feeling something amiss with your relationship.
"We need to be a portrait of domestic harmony." He muttered, his arm tightening onto your hold. The contact was purely physical for the crowd, but it burned through his coat sleeve.
"Then let us give them a good performance," You replied with a radiant smile. You leaned towards him, looking up with an expression that would seem like absolute adoration to any bystander. "Are you enjoying your return to the country, my lord? Or are you already planning yourΒ nextΒ departure?"
A low blow question, delivered with the sweetness of honey. Sukuna felt a surge of genuine anger, not at you though, but at himself, for creating this wall.Β
He stopped, forcing the both of you to stand together in the middle of the path.
"I am exactly where I intend to be," He stated, his voice hard as he locked eyes with you.
For a second, you felt the mask slip again. He noticed it, the look of hurt on your face as your gaze dropped. You gulped, pulling your arm from his very subtly. It was not enough for anyone to notice, but enough for him to feel the sudden jolt by your absence.Β
"Of course," You nodded, recovering that polite graceful tone with a soft smile. "We must ensure the parishioners are tended to. Shall we?"
βββββββββββββββββ
It seemed that Lady Shiro was not done with her activities. When you thought you were being sly with your distance for the Duke, it went unnoticed by all, almost all.Β
The hawk-eyed lady with her bright pink gown and extensively laced hat did not overlook that matter. And seeing she had no valid basis to expand on her doubts, it made most sense to distrub you the very next day for trivial matter, to obviously cover her devious intentions of gaining intelligence upon the affairs happening within the walls of your estate.
She was at it again in your drawing room, her voice a thin condescending needle. She was questioning your management of the local charity funds, occasionally poking at your intelligence with an insincere smile.
To your lack of awareness, Sukuna was in the library at that moment, reading his Heian poetry when he lost enough patience to close his book shut and intrude on the disrespect. His fists was curled, counting down his patience and maintaing composure. A slip from him would be far too scandalous. Even for a pitiful lady like Shiro, his involvement could cause far more damage. It was not that he minded, but he knew you would never forgive him if he did what his heart wanted to do in that moment.
He was about to step out, not to react, but make his presence be known, when he stilled in his steps.Β
His gaze landed on you, sat upright. You did not blink, you did not look the slightest bit flustered. You lookedΒ bored.Β
"I appreciate your solicitude for the funds, Lady Shiro." Your voice dropped into that calm tone that made the room feel cold. Leaning forward slightly, you continued. "However, your assessment seems to rely on the outdated ledger. I have spent the last week auditing the current numbers. If you were to look at theΒ actualΒ figures, which I have most distinctly noted here, you would see that our surplus is the highest it has ever been."
You slid a paper across the table with a soft yet decisive thud. Lady Shiro faltered, her face reddening as she scanned the organized data.Β
There was no response.Β
Sukuna stayed back in the library, his heart thudding a loud rhythm against within him. He had intended to step in, but he realized that you hadn't needed saving at all.
He watched in awe, the way your eyes sparked with that sharp, beautiful intellect. The way you simply commanded respect without asking for it, all through your sheer competence. A surge of something raw and overwhelming β pride and desire β rushed through him.
HisΒ breath hitched.Β Good God, you are magnificent.
Duke Sukuna had been treating you like a fragile creature who needed his space for adjustment. In reality, you were the most discerning person in the room. He realized then that his distance hadn't just been a grave mistake, it was an insult.Β
βββββββββββββββββ
It had almost been two weeks since your daring husband came back after tending to his matters. Additionally, it had been over a month since you wedded him, a month and a week to be precise. You weren't counting.
For Sukuna, his internal state was a lot like the storm that was currently active. It prowled around the estate. The wind was strong enough to twist the branches of the oak trees until they snapped and shrieked against the library glass. The sound set the Dukeβs nerves on fire.Β
Thunder rolled, a low vibration that he felt in the soles of his boots. It was a suffocating. Every flash of lightning lit the room.
He was not able to sleep, his work in his study was suffering. All he did day and night was observe you.Β
He begins to notice tiny details: the way your quill pauses when he enters the room, the scent of your lavender soap lingering in the library, the way you avoid his eyes. He has become excessively attached to you from the distance.
You, likewise, were exhausted by the very wall you had created. Being polite and distant was hard work. It drained you, and all you wanted at times was to scream into the abyss and put an end to the conflict you had developed.Β
At times, you would catch yourself wanting to reach out for his arm. You find yourself reading in the library at night, specifically because you are aware he frequently visits it at that hour.
The wind hammered against the library glass. Inside, the room was brightened by flickering glow of a single lamp. Sukuna was sat in the wingback chair, his book on Heian poetry closed and ignored, his gaze fixed entirely on his wife.
It was late, and you were in a dressing gown. You should be less of a 'Duchess' and more the woman he fell in love with , yet he was unable to see the soft side of you.Β
You stood by the fireplace. You had been quiet all evening.
"You have not once cast a glance at me since dinner." He spoke up, his voice unusually low, rough.
You slowly turned with a guarded expression. You had the same polite mask you had been wearing since he returned. "I have been reading, Your Gr-Β dear. It is a quiet evening." You bit your lip.
"It is an evening of torment," He corrected you, his voice rising, a bit like the Duke-like cadence he had tried to maintain. He stood up, his movement sudden and almost predatory. He didn't approach you with the measured gait of a husband, instead Sukuna crossed the room with the frantic energy of a man who had reached his limit.
Stopping just short of you, just enough that you could feel the heat radiating off of his skin, enough for you to feel his scent β that had a strong mix of something barbaric β you felt your senses get overwhelmed.
"I have spent two weeks watching you." He murmured, his eyes searching yours with desperation. "I watched you destroy Lady Shino with a single sheet of paper. I watched you rule over this house with a grace that puts my own governance to shame. And I have spent every waking second of those two weeks hating myself for leaving, and hating myself even more for the distance Iβve kept since I returned."
You tried to step back, but his hand was faster, catching your arm with a soft yet desperate frip.Β
"Don't." He pleaded, his voice breaking. "For the love of God, do not walk away from me tonight."
"Why?" You breathed, feeling your composure break slowly. It came by at such a pace that you weren't aware of the shimmer in your eyes. Maybe it was the hurt you endured since your marriage. "You wanted space, did you not? You left me for a week to do as I pleased, and I have done exactly that. I have learned to endure your absence. Isn't that what you intended?"
"No!" The word ripped from his throat.Β
He looked at you, but his usual composure was completely obliterated. He looked terrified. "I left to demonstrate that I could fulfill my obligations, and I returned to find that my duty was here, in this room, withΒ you. You think youβre so clever, acting like the dutiful, cold-blooded wife." He growled, a low rasp to his voice. "Youβre torturing yourself, and I am quite done watching this pitiful performance of yours."
He leaned in, his forehead resting against yours, his breath hitching in a way that made your heart stop. "I am not a Duke tonight. I am a languid man sorely besotted with his wife. Tell me to leave, and I will go, and I shall never again set foot in your study. Yet, should you let me stay, should you declare you still desire my presence hereβ¦"
He did not conclude his sentence. There was no need to. In the sudden, deafening silence between the thunder, the air was so charged it felt electric. You did not pull away, you stood perfectly still, one arm in his hold while the other hand rested against his chest, feeling the uneven hammering of his heart.Β
"You speak of the freedom you left me." You whispered, voice barely steady. "I am capable. I am intelligent. I can manage the ledgers, the estate, and the silence of this house better than most men could. I pride myself on that strength, Sukuna. It is who I am." You looked up at him with searching eyes that were moist with tears you had refused to let fall.
"But there is a difference between being capable of surviving alone and wanting to be left alone." You continued with a trembling voice. "When you departed⦠I found no objection to the labour. It was the silence. I had imagined, in my foolishness, that marriage would be a partnership. It would be a place where my intellect would be met with affection, not just administrative delegation. I am not a solitary specie, Your Grace."
You felt his hands tighten on your arm, his touch a silent plea.
"I have spent two weeks watching you rule this house silently, untouchable." He hissed, his hand sliding down to your waist, thumb dragging harshly across, not with reverence, but with a bruising friction. "And each time your gaze passed through me rather than resting upon me, I longed to burn this entire library down just to compel you to acknowledge my presence."
You stared into his eyes, a blazing fire lit in them. You were aware of his fiery temper, feeling his heat prickling your skin. It was indeed Ryomen Sukuna. He was not a duke for nothing. Behind his composure and graceful strides lay a man of authority, and though it it should make you feel dread, it stirred something far more thrilling within you.
"Upon your return, I was not cold because my affections had subsided." You admitted, your voice dropping to a whisper. "It was because I was seized with a dreadful terror. I saw a man who felt obligated to me, not one who desired me. I deemed myself unworthy of something I most earnestly desired, which was your affection. I his behind my duties because it was the only way I knew how to protect myself from the realization that I may have married a man who never intended to lay eyes upon me."
A heavy, ragged sound escaped him β a mix of a sob and a growl. He pulled you closer, shocking you as his forehead dropped to your left shoulder, his hands clutching to your waist as if you were the only thing keeping him bound to his sanity.
"I never intended to make you feel unworthy," He breathed, his voice raw and hot against your neck. "I was a fool. I thought I was being noble in granting you distance. And I have been enduring the torment of every agonizing second you have been standing five feet from me."
He was tired of the elegant and polished words that had kept you apart from him. He was meeting his patience. Moving with brutal focus, he stepped into your space until your backside met the desk. He pinned you there with his frame, his breath ragged, uneven against your cheek now.
"I don't care for your ledgers!" He snarled, words thick with desperate hunger. "I don't care for your efficiency or fortitude. I desire the woman who has been yearning to scream at me for the past month. I desireΒ youΒ β not the Duchess, but my wife who has been staring at me, awaiting the moment I should finally lose my reason."
A flush climbed up your neck, feeling hot as every word escpaing his mouth kissed your skin heavy.Β
Your trembling hands raised up to grip his coat, your knuckles turning white as you anchored yourself to him. The logic and carefully curated distance meant nothing now. You didn't just want him; youΒ neededΒ him to be as unhinged as you were. A choked, breathless sound escaped your lips, a mix of relief and an aching.Β
He lifted his head, his gaze searching yours with an intensity that burned. "I donβt want a stewardess for my estate. I want the woman who makes me feel, for the first time in my life, that I am not just a title, but a man."
He pressed his palm against your cheek, his thumb tracing a line across your jaw. "I am warning you, do not make me live another day in this house without knowing that I am yours."
The man who had been pacing like a caged animal mere moments ago now moved with a deliberate slowness to his moves. He kept his palm pressed against your cheek, his thumb tracing your lower lip, as if he were memorizing you.
You leaned into his touch, eyes fluttering shut. All the anger, the administrative efficiency, and the pride you had armored yourself with dissolved away. Instead, there was now an aching, raw relief. You was tired of being strong.
He finally leaned down, pausing a breath away from you, a silent question hovering in the space between you two.Β
You did not wait. You reached up, fingers threading into the peachy hair at the nape of his neck, and pulled him the final inch.
At first, It was a gentle pressure of lips that had been denied each other for far too long. He kissed you with a way that felt like worship, his mouth moving against yours with a slow, agonizing tenderness. That gentleness barely lasted a second.
He then kissed you with an aching desperation, his hands roaming over you with a heavy, possessive roughness that demanded you feel every ounce of the torment heβd been through. It was a kiss that was meant to punish you for the distance and simultaneously beg you for relief.
He groaned, a low, guttural sound of surrender, pressing you harder into the desk until your legs gave out and he was forced to catch your weight. There was no softness, just the suffocating and electrifying realisation that he had finally stopped playing the game. He was done with the distance, and he was taking what was his.

The drawing room had been ready since afternoon. You had asked Katherine, your Lady's maid and currently the one whom you feel most comfortable with, to ensure all was perfection, and that she must direct the housemaids in setting everything right. All was perfection, except for you yourself.
It's not that you were unacquainted with responsibilities β far from that. You were simply incapable of understanding the reasoning behind doing such things.
You knew this was not merely a social call; it was a social and communal assessment with high potential to be a gossip-grabbing hub if you give a chance to be that. The Duke, who happened to be your husband too, had clearly stated his stance of your value to him, seeing he was out handling the management of his other estates rather than making his spouse feel right at home.
That was something you weren't going to address. You had devoted so much time to sadness. It is not worth feeling a headache once more, especially when the impending gathering offers a greater likelihood of that.
To fail to receive your guests was to invite rumors of incompetence, contempt and eventually questioning about The Duke's choices. The very fact that you were watching out for the man who never watched over you was unjust. Yet, it was not just about being his wife, but now a Duchess who had a lot to do. You too were now the gatekeeper of yours and his status, and the first few steps of this terrain were already uneven.
Eventually, the carriages had arrived and the smell of powder and fresh linen filled your drawing-room.
"This space is remarkably calm, Your Grace. One does not become accustomed to the silence after such an exciting wedding." Lady Hale placed her cup carefully onto the pitch, looking at you with curious eyes you did not fail to catch.
"It is a change of pace, for sure." You kept you tone light and posture relaxed. Only a fool would not see the irony of being in presence of some of the ladies who tried their best to present themselves or their daughters to the Duke. You were not that naive to fail to note that there might be some unaddressed tension upon this subject. And considering that you were never part of their social circle, the likelihood of lobbying was far greater.
"Though, I suppose when His Grace is away, the silence can be⦠quite intense." Lady Shiro, the mother of one of the girls who had a lot of interest in the Duke, held a pointed look to you.
"The Duchess is clearly a woman of great understanding. She knows that a Dukeβs marriage is also public matter. Has the adjustment to the estate been difficult, Your Grace? We were discussing the household ledgers just the other day, managing a staff of this size is such a heavy burden for one so young andβ¦ unaccustomed to such things." Lady Hale involved herself in the conversation again, an attempt to soothe out from where Lady Shiro left off rather hardly. "Still, how brave of you to remain. Most men in the Dukeβs position would have swept a new bride off, though, of course, the Duke has always been far too preoccupied."
It was obvious as day β they wished to hear what you had to say about the Duke's absence, that too on such a brief notice. It was a custom to have a honeymoon period, so his departure was unexpected, yet not odd. You knew they sought your true opinion on the matter, hoping to see you crack and say something you might regret.
"I find the silence quite refreshing, actually. It is far more easy to read without being constantly interrupted by noise. I have found the ledgers to be a fascinating study as well, the Duke has a very rigorous system, don't you agree?" You smiled, not concealing that you were heavily involved in all his affairs, giving them more to vex about.
The displeasure was evident, particularly on Lady Shiro and her daughter's expressions. In moments like these you were grateful for being stubborn about handling you father's matters upon occasions, it helped you gain temprament. Had you not pushed them and gained such experiences, you'd have cracked for this crowd and given them the satisfaction they were hoping to seek.
"In all fairness, we were all quite surprised when we heard His Grace had departed so abruptly. One does worry about the strain such early separation puts on a new union." This time it was Lady Mei, with her sultry voice and red-stained lips, a very in-demand bachelor. She too, had her eyes set on the Duke. It was her that made you question why the Duke saw a spouse in you, since she too was a woman with intellect along with her beauty.
"The Dukeβs dedication to all his responsibilities is what makes his position so vital. I am quite content to manage his affairs here while he manages the ones there. It is a partnership, afterall."
The brief silence that followed was awkward. You had firmly stamped your role in the Duke's life, showing to be a competent and supportive partner, everything they weren't hoping for you to say. Was any of it true to your feelings? Not even the slightest. Yet, you had to pick between being honest with yourself, and being honest to a pack of wolves hoping to prey on your vulnerability.
Lady Shiro spoke up again.
"Your Grace, do you not find the estate library too stagnant? His Grace has a vast collection, of course. It takes a certain kind of temperament to appreciate it. My daughter, for instance, derives pleasure from her reading, though at times its straining upon her." You smiled, turning to look at the massive bookshelf through the library door that was being referred to. One of the maids must have forgotten to close the door.
"Actually, majority of those belong to me. His Grace has a separate storage for his literature; he prioritised my belongings in the library, as I am always engaged in reading." You stood up, taking gentle steps towards your haven. "The majority of these are indeed mine."
You had told him about wanting to bring these with you to the estate, and he assured you it was fine. His responses should have brought you joy, but they managed to provoke you instead. He held no objection to any of your terms, and permitted you to act as you pleased. Yet, you desired his engagement in your affairs. You reached for the door, closing it.
"It has been a pleasure to receive you all," You said, your tone light and perfectly measured. "I am sorry to cut our time short, but I must attend to my matters. His Grace left me with quite a significant amount of work to oversee in his absence, and I do so enjoy keeping his affairs in perfect order."
You offered them a brilliant smile, showing no vulnerability. "Thank you for bringing me such lovely company today." You did not wait for their response, calling for the footmen to see them out.
You had excused yourself, strolling alone with your thoughts towards your chamber. What you did this day was unjust. You did not jeopardise is reputation or utter a word that would cause others to question his role as a spouse. You played the part of a wife who was besotted for her husband's loyalty to his responsibilities, when the truth was that he was setting you aside, arguably his most important responisbility.
"Katherine, i would like a change of clothes, please. These are ill-suited to my comfort." You muttered quietly, and your maid nodded knowingly.
The connection you shared with Katherine was interesting. She had been by your side since your youth, knowing full well the character you possessed. At times, she even bore the blame for your shenanigans, and witnessed your transformation into the lady you are now. This also meant that she saw the turmoil you were experiencing, yet all she could do was quietly comply.
"Yes, Your Grace."
"I told you to refrain from the title when it's just us." You took the pins out of your hair.
"Yes, my Lady." Katherine smiled as she helped you out of your dress.

It took two weeks for your husband to return.
The library door opened, and Sukuna stepped into the warm glow of the lamps. You were at your desk, had been for hours, but you rose the moment he entered.
Your movements were fluid, graceful, and utterly composed.
His body language showed his fatigue, the journey must have been long. His coat was wrinkled, his peachy hair not set perfectly on his head. You liked when his hair was out of place.
You approached him with a quiet, measured pace, stopping a distance away. All you could build the energy for was to offer a small, welcoming smile.
"Welcome home, Your Grace," You said softly, you voice steady, lacking any bite, yet there was a stillness in your expression. "I trust your travels were not too tiring. We have been managing quite well in your absence."
It was a polite, perfect sentence, but the Duke went very still. He saw the way you looked at him, with the gentle reserve of a woman who had learned to be content in his absence. It made him wonder what the sentiment was behind your words as well as your poise.
"You have missed me, then?" he asked, his voice dropping low, testing the waters.
It made your heart skip a beat, feeling an ounce of relief now that you were finally going somewhere with showing the Duke what it was you wanted.
Still, you tilted your head, your expression very thoughtful as if you were considering a much more complex question. "I had almost forgotten what it was like to share the house with someone other than the staff. I have found that the library is a very peaceful place. It has been a quiet week of study, Your Grace."
"I regret the timing of my departure, but do not mistake my business for a lack of interest in what I left behind."
He closed the distance between you both in two long strides, his presence suddenly shadowing the room. You gulped, staring into his eyes, eyes that felt heavy with a hunger heβd been suppressing since he left. The air grew thick, and you grew overwhelmed by the scent of his cologne. He dominated your space, his warmth heavy and his gaze steady.
"We spoke about this." He spoke, voice low. "You can drop the formalities in our home, myΒ dearest." It felt almost teasing, yet the sincerity of his tone combined with the fuelling look in his eyes made your stomach twist. You felt your cheeks heat up.
It felt like a trap. If you stayed and allowed that proximity to last even a second longer, your rehearsed anger about his absence would turn into something far more dangerous.
You stepped back, smoothing the front of you gown, hands trembling only the slightest bit. "I shall leave you to rest. I have been at my desk for some time, and I feel I am suddenly... quite fatigued." You gulped, walking to the door, hearing your own heartbreat.
"I have no intention of letting you bury yourself in ledgers."
You hand froze on the doorknob, heart hammering frantically. You could not bring yourself to look behing you, all you could do was take deep breaths.
Sukuna reached out for your hand on the knob, his fingers closing gently around your wrist. The touch was meant to be grounding, a reclaiming of his wife.
But you froze, your eyes drifting past his shoulder. You weren'y able to pull away, but you didn't lean into him, either. The lack of response from you was a painful contrast to the woman who greeted him with genuine interest a few weeks ago.
"You are quiet," He said, his voice lowering, softening into something more personal. "Even for you, I expected⦠more of a welcome."
You looked at him for a second, feeling yourself hanging by a string. Slowly, the mask was slipping off, and behing it was no anger. It was more the hollow disappointment that you tried to hide so badly.
"I am merely fulfilling my duties, as expected," You quietly replied. "It is my role to see that the estate is running efficiently, whether the Duke is present or not. I have been very busy, Sukuna. It has been busy." You swallowed, watching his expressions fall slightly.
It wasn't the words that bothered him, it was the way you were addressing him. Even after saying his name in the sweetest tone, you did not mention missing him, nor did you ask about his journey. It felt like you were treating his return as an update rather than a reunion. It bothered him.
The sudden unease was a sensation he couldn't quite name, but it felt horrifying. "Did I do something to cause this withdrawal?" he asked, his voice rough. "You speak as if you were perfectly content while I was gone. Tell me, dear wife, was my absence of so little consequence to you?"
To Sukuna, you was never merely a political match or a bearer for his heir, you were a sudden blinding light in his cold and rigid world. He had spent his years in the world of transactions and rules, never expecting to one day lay his eyes on the brilliant woman that would become his reason.
He didn't fall in love with you in a way that was gradual, he was swept by you from the very first moment he saw you.Β
It was at the ball, the first time he spoke to you. You were standing in the corner, hair a little loose from the pins, away from under the chandeliers that made every woman look like a portrait.
When he approached you, he expected some usual nerves and empty pleasantries. Instead, you had looked up at him with a gaze that stripped off of his "Duke" demeanour for a moment.
You had laughed at something he said, a genuine burst of gentle, soft laughter, not hiding you mouth behind a fan. You were vibrant and beautifully and maddeningly confident in your own skin.
He had been a dead man walking from that very moment.Β
From the way your eyes brightened to the tilt of your head when you listened to him, he was already held hostage, and he fell victim to the Stockholm syndrome.Β
To have to see that wild and unabashed smile turning into a distant one, it was it was not just a disappointment. It was a deprevation. He had walked into the estate expecting to return to his home. And just now, when you turned with that chilling politeness, Sukuna felt a physical sensation he never felt before.
You looked down at where his hand met yours, and gently pulled your wrist out from his hold.Β
Your eyes finally meeting his with a clarity that felt colder than before. "It was not a matter of consequence. I spent these two weeks learning exactly what it means to be a Duchess in your absence. I learned to govern the staff, to manage the accounts, and to fill the silence of these rooms with my own thoughts. I found that I am remarkably capable of existing within the parameters you set for me." Your smile was faint, almost mournful.
You turned towards the door, but stopped, not looking back, voice barely audiable.
"I have become quite proficient at living without you. I only hope that is what you intended from the beginning, since you refuse to share even a bed with me."
Sukuna could feel the floor drop out from under him.Β
He had moved to follow you. His hand had actually reached out.
But the words died in his throat.
He left thinking you would be grateful for the freedom of the estate, comfortable to adjust to your duties without feeling pressure by his presence. Except, finding you thriving at the cost of you needing him was a shaking realisation.Β
He wanted to be furious, but he couldn't even summon the anger.
I only hope that is what you intended from the beginning, since you refuse to share even a bed with me.
And that was his pathetic attempt at chivalry.
When he sat down with his gentleman to discuss the logistics and changes the estate required upon your arrival, he seemed to have drowned himself in the thoughts of what would make you the happiest.Β
He was physically exhausted from his pressures. He worried that he would be bad company with all his tensions seeping into your private lives. He was afraid of upsetting you. The choice of a separate room was to give you space from his volatility.
But it wasn't just that. Sukuna worried that entering your private space would feel like an act of entitlement. He wanted you to want him to be there, not to feel forced by the duties of your position. And, of course, he was painfully aware of the intensity of his attraction for you. He was terrified to come off as a typical lust-driven man.Β
In all truth, he loved you too deeply and feared doing anything to upset you. With all that building up within him, he left all the authority of the relationship to you.
Clearly, it has backfired. He had indulged in his own thoughts to such an extent that he actually ended up sabotaging his relation with you.
In a way, it attested his humanity. The Duke was a man of reason, logic, and good sense. Sukuna, on the other hand, was a fool in love who went beyond all measures to try and please the woman he cherished the most.Β Who would have guessed for the Duke to be such an over-thinker when it came to his lover.
It was now his duty to make amends and regain your trust.

A week. It had been a week since fate tied your string to that of the most longed-for man. The season was said to be for the young women of the elite to present themselves in hope of garnering the attention of someone too good to refuse. It was a modest goal for a girl, but finding a husband with a title, wealth, and status was the only way to ensure security and social standing.Β
You did not carry the leverage to have much of a choice in the matter. Even you were past the age, but still a lady, no different from the rest, desiring to wed an eligible gentleman. Although you ensured to present your conditions as straightforwardly as you could without transgressing the lines.
Freedom, sincerety and devotion, you asked.Β
Never following the characteristics of a lady of your age, chasing your own whims and tolerating your mother's anxiety regarding your certain unladylike tendencies that she feared would be the reason you never settle β these were all-the-more reasons you felt the need to prove there was a place for everyone.Β
For years, you had been a permanent fixture on the topic of marriage. First a candidate, then a target, then a ghost the older you got. From then on, you watched the freshly seventeens fly about, desperate to catch a favorable match, while your days grew more and you remained stubbornly yourself.Β
You were told to believe that you had reached the age where society no longer whispered behind you, but they rather spoke with a pitying certainty that you were to be expired soon if you continued with your obstinacy. Yet being you stubborn self, you had worn that label like a suit of armor.Β
You had savored your solitude, your books, and the quiet indulgence of a life unburdened by a husbandβs expectations.Β
Which is why, when you heard that the Duke had decided on you, it startled you. Yet, it change you running away from the matter to realising you were equal to any, as deserving of love, and that the social constructs of age were artifical and meaningless.
Yet, even for a man of high stature like Ryomen Sukuna, the conditions remained. To any who might seek you, you stated to let your set customs be known so that they adjust their courtship accordingly.Β
Your involvement was constant, from having to help your father manage his estate accounts, to furthering your knowledge though reading. You grew up with knowing how to tackle responsibilities. It had now become one with you, and this habit would be difficult to brush off.Β
So when, despite the conditions your father supposedly made clear, you got to know of the Duke asking for your hand in marriage, it was a shock.
Your first act was to corner your father on whether his word had truly cleared your conditions. When you stared into his averted gaze, your spirit shattered once you felt the lack of honesty in his tone. Yet, you found yourself slipping from the control over your own situation, because this was not any fortune-bearer, but the Duke himself.
You were surrounded with far too many voices and opinions that were celebrating the marriage becfore you even gave your yes. It must have been greater than life to have a Duke ask for you, as everybody around you turned a deaf ear to your worries.
Within weeks, it was all settled and the most important moment of your life arrived unexpectedly; you found yourself walking the aisle, your arm embraced by your father's, gazing upon Sukuna's gentle smile, which remained entirely mysterious to you.
A beautiful man, without an ounce of doubt. You refused to admit that he conquered your heart the moment your gaze fell upon him. It even angered you how you were instantly immersed by his very presence. The fire in his eyes contrasting with the softness of his voice. The change of atmosphere in every room he stepped in. The lack of fidgeting or swaying, a poise and confident stance.
And the distinct qualities one wouldn't think of so easily, to associate with Dukes. Things that can't be easily categorised. Rumours danced around of his interest in poetry, how he had a library of books from The Heian Period specially translated for His Grace.
And on the few short meetings set upon his request, you felt the difference in his mask. In public, he is the perfect, cold, composed. He performs his duties with utmost efficiency.Β
But you got a glimpse of what was beneath the mask, the moments where he looked at you longer than you found comfortable, or the passing comment that revealed he knew a secret he shouldn't.Β
It felt like a fairytale, a spark where you felt that there was hope to feel love. A hope that there was someone there who would understand you and love you for who you were. Someone to not make you feel trapped with the burden of expectations or the unforgiving society. And beneath it all, you felt a craving of wanting to be desired.
And since then, a week since the the marriage, a week of sleeping alone in the gowns your mother got made for your sacred nights, and a week of brief tears upon realising the dream was slowly fading away, you began acknowledging your surroundings.
"I shall be departing for business at early dawn. My return remains uncertain, but should any matter require your knowledge, I will ensure that the message reaches you." Your husband walked into the drawing-room, looking ever-so tempting in the maroon cashmere robe fitted around his body.Β
His hair eas unlike his public style, with peachy strands falling loosely. The sight of him added fuel to the fire that lit the first night of your marriage, where he asked his gentleman to guide you to 'your' room and excused himself to the other direction.
Since then, you were descending further into heartbreak, your very poise beginning to slip.Β
"Yes, Your Grace." You answered absentmindedly, keeping your eyes on the lit flame under the fireplace, watching it dance around the wood.Β
In your tightest robe, the one that's colour almost matched his hair, nothing made you feel good. Afterall, it wasn't easy to accept that you had yet again been fooled by your own standards.
He stood, silent eyes tracing over your tense yet maintained posture, your back parallel and away from the back of the sofa. The robe did it's job to enhance the curves of your chest, helping them portrude through it's cut and almost reflect the light of the fireplace. Your mother told you to stay moisturised, especially during these cold and dry days.
Your absentmindedness made it an easy path for his eyes to graze all your crevices without putting effort to his slyness. Though immediately, his far-from appropriate staring was interrupted by your silent voice.
"Does this signify the fate I must endure from now on? One where I am burdened with the management of servants and the arranging of tea-parties? Or is it to forge political aliiances to uphold my absent spouse's reputation?" You spoke, quietly, cautiously, playing with the ring on your finger as you continued to stare at the fire.
"I cannot avoid my duties. Believe me, I act from necessity, not choice." He answered, voice more hoarse than you recall. Had it not been the gloom you were surrounded by within your mind, it would have certainly created a path for you to test the waters. But you were blinded by the pessimism that was spreading through your veins.Β
"I find myself perpetually curious. The ballroom was gleaming with young ladies who would have nodded at your every utterance and faded gracefully into the background of your estates. Why then, did you insist upon securing me?" You turned your head, finally meeting his gaze.
It added to the questions in your head, the mysteries you had sitting unsolved. For a man to have declared separate bedding, failed to consummate, not even acknowledge your presence as his spouse, he had some audacity to stare at you the way he currently was, with eyes that were quick to fasten your heartbeat.
"I had my reasons, and I merely observed. Others spoke of you in terms most favourable."Β
"And now I am but an ornament." You whispered, feeling yourself on edge and doing the utmost to hold onto the cracked branch that was saving you from causing a ruckus. He slowly walked to the sofa opposite you, seating himself down in a comfortable manner.
It was new, seeing him sit opposite you anywhere but the dining table where you ate in silence.Β
"I have never claimed that you are barred from pursuing your desires. You possess the liberty of free will." He declared softly, studying your upset posture. He was very much against keeping you from your usual diversions, it was those very qualities that made him desire you in the first instance.
Yet, he proved himself a man afterall, unable to understand that it was beyond those things.
Failing to understand that you hadn't taken upon the role of his wife just for that, but rather the exclusive incentive only a spouse could offer. Had the reason been the liberation, you were managing fine as a bachelor, attending to such pursuits as you wished. The whispers of people had stopped bothering you time ago.
It was the sacred factors that tempted your decision further. The imagination of His Grace's fingers making contact with the bare of your skin, the solace you craved but never acknowledged, the urgency you still stugged to navigate but you knew it was burning within you.
Why was it not how you wished for? What was it that he thought you seeked? Why was you fate so cruel to not even reward you with the touch of your spouse.
Albeit the efforts, you were unable to restrain your passion. The back of your throat felt heavy, and his presence felt nothing but additonal weight on your fragile shoulders.
"You fail to understand the matter." You whispered, standing up to escape his presence, head lowered with misery. "I wish you safe return through your travels, Your Grace."Β
You did not spare him a chance to take in your sentiments before excusing yourself to your bedroom, feeling the waterworks begin for the nth time in the past week. The weight of it all was unbearable.
In the room where the flames grew more, weeping at your dejected exit, your husband sat still in front of them.
"My dearest, if you only knew."
