Right now Arrow is filming somewhere between 5x08-5x10. Quite frankly, I can’t tell which episode they are on. I think they are filming out of order. They are either filming the 100th episode or 5x09. Those are my best guesses.

Exactly. This is one of the most ridiculous things about HLV - the idea that John would destroy the flashdrive without reading it. That he would accept Mary’s past and believe that they could have a future untainted by anything she has done (and do not get me started on her shooting Sherlock). This is so not John. 

John is a man who is constantly asking questions, he does not take things at face value. He did not believe Sherlock was a fake when everybody else did. So why should he trust Mary just because Sherlock told him? True, he places a lot of trust in Sherlock, up to the moment in Appledore when he still believes Sherlock has a plan B, but this is his own life, marriage, and future after all that is at stake.

@isitandwonder– I look at everything in HLV as an AU—the exact opposite of what should happen. I waiver on when the EMP exactly started—?right after Sherlock got shot vs. after his collapse in 221B. I think that everyone is OOC–except Sherlock. He is imagining a read of the story where he does not win (John)….lie back and lose!!, because, so far, he hasn’t won (John)–yet (!). We have to look at the statements the characters make with a critical eye and de-bunk them. I think a good tag line would be Wiggins is not an excellent chemist. 

What other ‘nots’ can we find?

@isitandwonder OK, one more then I totally have to go to work. I remember a post, not sure who/ not sure where, that put up stills of Mycroft’s office. In TEH his desk has a very large glass globe on it. Them in 2 scenes in HLV-one right after Sherlock has been shot and then during the discussion with Lestrade about looking for Sherlock, the globe is much smaller. Did Mycroft decide to downsize his globe? Due to the inconsistencies, I lean toward MP for HLV starting right after Sherlock gets shot, so, he does come back on the OR table, but he is in a coma the rest of the time, so– no discussion with Janine, no jumping out of the window right after surgery to traipsing around London. No Christmas dinner, no confronting Mary. Lets keep going !!! No Christmas forgiveness scene, no shooting Magnussen, No exile, no weird goodbye with John on the tarmac. 

They are not stranded on the tarmac. They are stranded in the hospital. Sherlocks in a coma, John is at his side pining and worrying.

I’m almost that convinced that the scene of John in hospital in the trailer, is John at Sherlock’s bedside. (Might be wrong, but I love to imagine it’s the case anyway) :)

Ohhhh and that could explain John’s hair and why all the scenes with the baby are so extrange. And why Sherlock look so skinny and is unshaved, he could be off recently from the hospital in that scenes.

Sorry to barge in on this one… from the very beginning of the EMP discussion I have been struggling with the idea, that we really have an EMP like from the moment Sherlock was shot as suggested here. The reason why I’m sceptic about this concept is that it would be REALLY  REALLY hard to grasp for the casual audience particularly after several years of hiatus… and now even harder after TAB (dream in dream sequences etc…) Not everyone has seen the show a hundred times and more like we did.

BUT the more I think about it the more it makes sense. To the point where nothing really NOTHING else makes sense.

John ‘trust issues’ Watson not reading the flash drive and forgiving Mary… see this scene always left me wondering like WTF?!? Right from the beginning in ASIP they made an effort to show us John has trust issues. He trusts no one, but then comes Sherlock and they make a big deal of showing us how he trusts Sherlock (and only Sherlock!!!) immediately. I always understood that as a way to point out that his relationship with Sherlock is special, that his relationship with Sherlock is different and something unique. After all the whole show revolves around the fact that their relationship is special. Trusting (and in consequence forgiving) Mary in HLV (after all that she’s done) would render these efforts meaningless…

And now setlock… why does it look like there is a time gap? Why do they all look so different from what they’ve looking like at the Tarmac scene, where we supposedly left them? John’s hair? Mary’s hair? Sherlock’s whole appearance? We even see John in a hospital room in the trailer… could be Sherlock’s room…

Seriously, I’m still struggling to believe they would pull off something like EMP… but I can’t find any other, better or more fitting solution to all the ??? I have after the mess that was HLV (and TAB).

One last wild speculation: What if EMP is real? What if they weren’t lying about TAB really being a one off? What if TAB was only to introduce the audience to the idea of something like an extended mind palace? To show the audience that Sherlock could make up a whole story in his mind when he’s sleeping/comatose or on drugs?

Now my brain hurts and I need to lie down

@mylastvow I was also skeptical about this, because why would they do the same thing twice? Sherlock out of a dream after another in TAB only to learn later that he was in a coma and imagining everything? But as you say, I find no other plausible explanation and, as Sherlock said at the beginning of everything, “How often have I said to you that when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth?”

That’s it, right there. EMP seems impossible and improbable, but how else does ANY OF IT MAKE SENSE??? I would LOVE for anyone to tell me how and I will shut up about EMP for the rest of my life and say everyday how wrong I am, but until then…THIS^^^^^

Very late to that interesting discussion. Reading all the brilliant comments took some time. Now I wonder what I could possibly add that hasn’t been mentioned already. Maybe this: The title of the show is ‘Sherlock’ and TPTB say it is a story about a detective. Would it be really that improbable that the story is told not only from Sherlock’s POV (mostly) but also - in parts - inside his extraordinary brain? In his Mind Palace? I can’t see a reason why this would be diminishing for Sherlock’s character growth. And like @isitandwonder explained in this post - there isn’t much character growth of the other characters anyway.

When @monikakrasnorada and I came up with this idea - end of January, I think - many people called this madness. And I see why this is difficult to believe but there are so many inconsistencies that can be explained by EMP. And most of all the inconsistencies in John Watson’s character. I am so excited to see how all this will play out in S4. And I love how we can use even the most famous Holmes quote to support our theory.

I think ‘madness’ is one of the kindest things that’s been said about our pet theory, @stillgosherlocked. I recall the term ‘emp assholes’ used at one point, and not in a cheeky way. 😞 I don’t believe in this theory to ruin anyone’s day, it’s just honestly as clear to me as those that ascribe to TJLC. I really can’t see it any other way at the moment. Will I be surprised if this isn’t how s4 plays out? Certainly! No one wants to be wrong, but I’m not willing to be ‘that’ person that will resist merely for the sake of resisitng as some of the more vocal naysayers seem to be. I love that more people are even entertaining the possibility of EMP. It’s fun to imagine how this will play out and that so many seemingly new ideas are possibly backing up this theory. Right or wrong, I can’t wait.
