Additionally, love this story. Always a treat to see Kris depicted as having a semi-healthy relationship with the people around them and the voice(s) in their head.
Last bit, but how do you (or y’all) determine, well, the speaking order and which slivers of the mind get priority in a scene in Disco Elysium fics? I plan to play the game so I could (maybe) write a fic with DE elements, and I was just wondering.

Anywho, Discorune is back from hiatus on the 21st, which has already passed, so- the update is live!
Thank you so much for your patience, and your kind words toward the fic! Kris and the Skills, well, it's better than the alternative, to be sure, but like, by what measure? At the very least, the Skills do notice when Kris is becoming overwhelmed, and try to accommodate them as much as possible. And they are most likely aligned with Kris' goals, which is more than what we can say for certain other potential possessors 😅
Regarding speaking order of the skills; this is gonna be a bit long, so I'll stick the rest of the ask under the cut :)
Discorune takes some cues from its inspiration THE FURY OF A SHATTERED MIRROR, in that a lot of the time the skills respond to each other as well as the actions taken, whereas in the real game there's more... disconnected statements that provide context or options. That's due to the nature of the game, where skill point allocation determines which skills speak more- the game has to make sense even if you've got a 1 in Empathy. Generally, the more levels in a skill, the more they start talking, and the more skills have higher levels, the higher chance there is to trigger dialogue that requires one or more skills. (One of the most memorable lines in the game is so because it's divided across three skills, with each skill that participates individually needing to meet the required threshold for it to be triggered.)
In Discorune, we use those context-or-option statements as well to further the narrative, but we also keep in mind- who would respond? Who would have an opinion on this, and what would happen from that? Entire bits have been invented out of thin air because we couldn't pass up the chance to have someone react in a specific way to the zaniness of the Dark World.
Furthermore, it seems the skills of Discorune have a bit more to them than simply focusing on their particular niche? Which is not something you specifically Need to do for your own fic, but something to consider for sure. This means that they can really help flesh out narrative and character development. (Whose character development? Yes.) Another thing we do in Discorune is use the mimicked UI elements for storytelling- a failed passive check vs a successful one, who's rolling the check, and the modifiers on active checks can tell you a lot about any given situation...
That's brings us to your second question, I suppose!
We don't roll for checks, nor do we consider skill levels. Checks pass or fail based on what the narrative needs to happen! Which is a lot easier than rolling for outcomes. I shudder to imagine that, it's probably been done but by those stronger than any of us.
(Shoutout to GWX, who's on a mad quest to tally what stats the skills have despite us not even trying to be consistent. She's put a lot of work into it and we commend her but the term 'mad quest' cannot be overstated. Good luck, GWX... 🫡)

To be clear, a great many things would have to be different for such a route to occur. According to my notes, there's actually not a single person/entity/train of thought/etc involved would go for something so weird! That's pretty unprecedented, in my opinion.
However in the scenario this would happen, it'd probably not be too far off to say that it would probably be tied to a certain political stance, one which holds the idea of strength above all else and considers enemies to be weak! So a skill could probably be convinced to create and perform a grueling physical challenge... Wait, what do you mean that's not what they meant by 'strength'?
Well, either way, whatever strangeness may occur, it's probably a good idea to listen to a certain dreamer. Divining bad omens is an important job, even if you dismiss it as your own imagination.
