Lots of concerns in the forest- we’re gettin’ into forest fire territory. Had a couple of the junior rangers back out, so we’re uh. Little short staffed up here.
The forest was beautiful at this time of year. All of the deciduous trees had come back from their winter slumber, but the weather was still wet and cool enough for the moss to be overtaking the rocks and fallen logs. Everything was green, and when it wasn’t raining, the ground was soft and plush under Dani’s bare feet.
Times like this made it a little easier to be stuck on earth- Dani almost didn’t hate her eternal exile under the soft, leaf-dappled sunlight.
I had a vivid dream that I had to name every single horse owned by the national park service but I had to abide by thoroughbred naming conventions (entire Real words, no mispellings, no profanities, no repeats at all ever) for like. Paperwork reasons? I had to enter the names into a text box on the horse registration website and the whole dream was me figuting out the Secret Rules and Giving Horses Increasingly Strange Named
I can still remember my reasoning like “There probably aren’t that many horses named after REALLY deviant sex acts” and “What if i give them hyphenated Puritan-style names? What if I give them LAST NAMES?“ “I can probably just string random nouns together and get them past the online checker”. Some names I Remember:

It’s been almost thirty years and Kepler still hasn’t found a solution to the Duck and Juno problem- try beating our skeeball scores this time, kids.

Hunting down a creature they couldn’t see proved to be a difficult task for the Pine Guard. There were no sightings, no questions they could slip into conversation. Just reports of cracked glass, of vibrations and high pitched noises and headaches.
And cornering it to try and deal with it was no stroll down easy street either.
Every hair on Duck’s body was standing on end, the vibration he now associated with the abomination nearly causing him to shake. It had taken them almost the whole week to locate the abomination, leaving them very little time to strategize how to fight something they couldn’t see, and were only half-certain had a physical form.
Beacon drawn, Duck stood at one end of the clearing, looking over at Aubrey on the other side. It had already been decided, she was the best person to deal with this. Fire didn’t need to see something to hit it in the same way a sword or a gunshot did. But this thing was fast, and if it got away, they likely wouldn’t have another chance.
A high pitched shriek filled the air, radiating out from the space in the center of the clearing. The blades of grass, the leaves, the trees themselves shook with the strength of the sound, and Beacon vibrated against Duck’s palm, the metal and leather biting into the skin, the pieces of the chain-blade singing in the wind.
Once the sound was finished, Duck’s ears were ringing, and he could almost feel the blood ringing in his ears, deaf to all other noise.
Gritting his teeth, Duck tried to shake his head clear, blue eye glowing with the same ghoulish energy that lit and connected Beacon from within. Taking the opportunity he could, Duck lunged at the space the creature theoretically occupied, Beacon lashing out and wrapping around it, the sharp edges of the fragments of Beacon’s blade digging into invisible flesh, holding it in place.
The shriek that it released this time was one of surprise and pain, louder and harsher than any before. Close as he was, the sound was a physical blow to Duck, overpowering his shields and popping both of his eardrums, blood dribbling down from his inner ears as he fell to his knees, still clutching Beacon in an attempt to hold the creature in place.
Wave upon wave of sound buffered Duck, vibrating down Beacon and down his arms and through his torso, bones grinding against each other.
The move allowed Aubrey to set the creature aflame, searing heat and buffeting sound overwhelming Duck at this short a distance. The last thing he was aware of was Beacon curling back down to his side as he fell to the floor, the creature materializing and melting down into black ooze around him, ears ringing, whole body sore before he blacked out.
