Say You Will (2017) Directed by Nick Naveda
*wakes up wife in the middle of the night*
@josephineelizabeth, Jay absolutely does this.
JOSEPHINE.
Josephine had always had an idea of what married life would be like. Before she grew into her own, she thought it would be picturesque, surrounded by white picket fences and emerald green grass. These ideas were mostly formed by the relationship she watched growing up, the one her parents had, which she thought could have no problems — but eventually, the world jaded her, and she learned very quickly that not everything was as it seemed. Relationships had always been hard for the woman, partly due to the fact that she had no real sense of self or idea of what she wanted to do with her life, and by the time she found her calling she was too preoccupied to even think about dating. There were moments here and there throughout her time in service but, for the majority of her nights, she would sleep alone.
Not anymore. Everything had changed when Josephine met James and suddenly she realized what love was supposed to feel like. She was hesitant at first, there was no question about that, but there was something between the two survivors that linked them in a way they couldn’t quite explain. From there, everything had moved very quickly, and Josephine now found herself in a (for the most part) happy marriage and with a beautiful son. There were tough times, that was undeniable, but at the end of the day the two had each other and that was all that mattered. Right?
“Long, I pulled a lot of teeth. But Jeremiah was exhausted so he fell asleep pretty quickly,” Josephine spoke, resting her hand over the top of her husband’s hair. Her fingers ran themselves through the short strands gently and with much admiration as she yawned in return. “And your day?” She asked, looking down at him through heavy lidded eyes.
Jay’s legs would stretch, a grunt and then sigh of satisfaction as his back cracked. “Always a good day.” He’d peer up at Jo with a loose smile, eyes eventually shutting as he allowed her fingers to massage his scalp and wipe away the tensions and annoyances of the day. There was no place he was more comfortable or his own than with his wife, and that was a feeling he’d held onto from the very moment they’d crossed paths.
After a moment he’d let out a yawn, eyes reopening to look up at Josephine. “I wish you’d come to services more. I miss looking up and seeing you sitting in the front row.” It was an off-handed remark, regardless of what tensions it may surface. Sundays were, at one point, far more sacred for the Dixon’s than it felt like they were now - missing one Sunday service every now and then suddenly meant missing all of them. After a moment he’d sit up, still nestled beside her as they nested on the sofa. “Think about it?”
Zeke sat on the bench, his eyes closed, letting the sun warm up his skin. He had been so busy with life, he forgot just how great nature really was. He held on tightly to the three bouquets of flowers for his mother, letting himself stretch over the bench. Loosing himself of the sounds of the city, the birds, the cars. He was soon startled by someone tapping him on the shoulder. He jumped slightly “Shit” he said looking around “sorry”
Jay loved living in Philadelphia. It truly was the City of Brotherly Love, the compassion that people held for their neighbors, and the interconnection of everyone and everything was what made city life so great. He’d always been the sort of person who looked out for others - it was why he’d gone into the military, and was now why he served as a pastor. He felt a deep empathy with humankind, which always made forming bonds with others easy. And on a day like today, when for no good reason he found himself dragging his feet to return home, a familiar face would draw him over to a park bench. A hand on the man’s shoulder, and he let’s out a laugh as he startles.
“Just me, Zeke.” He’d grin, finding himself shifting to sit behind the man he’d come to know through the darkest parts of their lives, and perhaps that was how they found their bond. “Everything going okay?” He’d inquire quietly, gray and blue hues scanning their surroundings.

“Forget it.”
“That’s in the past.”
“You make me happy.”
“You’re more than that.”
“I won’t lose you too.”
“Come cuddle.”
“Can’t you stay a little longer?”
“It’s not that easy.”
“I’ve had enough.”
“I fell in love with you, not them.”
“You’re the only one I wanna wake up next to.”

There were few people in life that were exclusively ‘Jay’s friend’. When you got married, there seemed to be this paradigm shift where suddenly all of your friends were couples too - because it made everything easier and less awkward. But when Daniel and Jay met, there was no shaking one from the other, especially when he’s your best man.
And sometimes, you really needed to meet your best man for a drink, all judgement barred. “Seriously, Dan. Sometimes I feel like I could walk in and out of that house, and no one would notice.” He’d sip from the beer he held in his hand, head shaking slightly.

Marriage was hard. That’s what everyone said. But when you love someone - really love someone - it’s what you do. There were a slew of reasons why Jay and Jo probably weren’t a great fit, and while Josephine had presented more caution to their relationship, Jay had been ready to take a leap of faith. And for a little while, it worked. But then she was pregnant with Jeremiah, he was engrossed in work and Jo was just trying to have a career for herself outside of being a wife and a mother - and suddenly the cracks began to show.
But they were dedicated to making things work, even if arguments became more and more frequent. But it also meant, after extremely long days, getting to crawl into bed and knowing your partner was there, judgement free.
It’d been a long Sunday of services and then running the food pantry, and by the time Jay was home early into the evening, he was absolutely exhausted. So it was nice to be greeted first thing by Josephine on their sofa, which he’d promptly collapse into, head in her lap. “Hello.” He’d yawn, lips pressing against her midsection, remembering briefly how many times he’d done that while they waited for their son to join them in the world. “How was your day? Jem down for a nap?”
Do you want more children?
Jeremiah is a great kid. Of course I’d love to have more. But that’s up to Jo - it’s her body.
