Like some of you are whole adults who still believe that the world operates in extremes of What Is Good and What Is Bad and that these things exist at polar opposite ends of a straight road, where every possible morally ambiguous thing must fit tidily along that line.

Someone will make the very reasonable point that Hollywood is oversexualised and often sex scenes in movies are uncomfortable because the tone and characterisations don't support the plot halting for sex, and it's clear the (usually male) director just inserted the scene for his own gratification, often with an unevenly sexualized attention on the women in the scene, sometimes demeaning or undermining that woman's character arc... and some of you demons will respond to that like "Bah! You naive puritan! Go marry the Hayes code if you love it so much!"

And equally someone else will make the valid point that sex and eroticism should be explorable in media, particularly to increase representation for queer/disabled/poc groups who often have limited (or no) sexual agency in mainstream media, and these scenes should not be subject to censorship... and some self described Smol Bean on this site will tell you that sex is never necessary on screen and you can just "suggest" that these "activities" are happening

And instead of being moderate and critically thinking individuals, thousands of you will just grab your pitchforks and flock to one of these two extreme reactions as being the "correct" mentality, sending hate (Why??) to people who disagree with you as if any of us here have meaningful power over how sex is handled in popular media

how tone indicators are meant to be used: “good for you! /gen” it works since “good for you” is often a sarcastic term and likely to be read as such and this clarifies that it’s genuine. the exclamation point helps that too

how i see people using them: “happy birthday!!! /p /pos /lh” when theres nothing about “happy birthday” that can be misconstrued as being sarcastic or negative or sexual in some manner. even “happy birthday /gen” is pushing it because when is wishing someone a happy birthday not genuine? even if it wasn’t someone’s birthday it would be obvious that it’s not and there’s no need for a tone indicator

/hj doesn’t even clarify anything and it’s mostly used as a joke in of itself which makes it more confusing. better not to say it at all?? plus its gotten to the point where they dont even mean what they do anymore, /nm is now being used passive aggressively like whats the point

i somehow knew something like this was going to happen. im not against tone indicators but we don’t need so many when you can just clarify what you mean in words. it also reads as a lot more genuine when you do that. overusing them can give rise to underlying social implications that are confusing

so here’s a trick to see if using a tone indicator is necessary or not so you can avoid overusing them: turn it into longer words. if you feel that it would be awkward to add onto the end of your post then you shouldn’t use it.

for example:

“good for you! i mean that genuinely by the way” sounds natural

“happy birthday! i mean this platonically, positively, and lightheartedly by the way”....you can see how redundant it is right? it’s awkward and not necessary. also “happy birthday! i mean this genuinely by the way” ...implies the other times you wished me happy birthday weren’t genuine? you guys see what i mean why overusing tone indicators can accidentally have underlying implications that aren’t there if you use it with something whose tone is obvious by itself and cannot be misconstrued

Tudor peasants had hangnails, nobles in the Qin dynasty had favorite foods, workers in the 1700s liked seeing flowers growing in pavement cracks, a cook in medieval Iran teared up cutting onions, a mom in 1300 told her son not to get grass stains on his clothes, some girl in the past loved staying up late to see the sun rise.

there are scriptures all over the world painstakingly crafted hundreds of years ago with paw prints and spelling mistakes or drawings covering up mistakes. a bunch of teenage girls 2000 years ago gathered to walk around their hometown, getting fast food and laughing with their friends. two friends shared blankets before people lived in houses. a mother ran a fine comb through her child’s hair and told it to stop squirming sometime in the 1000s. there are covered up sewing mistakes in couture dresses from the 1800s, some poor roman burnt their food so well past recognition that they just buried the entire pot. there are broken dishes hidden in gardens of people no one even remembers anymore
