âOh I see.â Sam just had this feeling she was going to get shot at. From past experience, if there was even the smallest percentage that she could get shot at, she got shot at.
âWell if Iâm going to go, then Iâm probably going to need the help of Lieutenant Reynolds.â Maybe she could even use him as a human shield.
âDonât worry commander, youâll have a team of SIU agents with and around you. I doubt your CO would let me steal you for a case if I couldnât guarantee your safety.â She was actually certain of that. Most ship captains put their crewsâ safety above almost anything. Even in a time of war. So she had made plans for that.
âIâll see if we can get additional clearance, but so far Starfleet only cleared you.â Convincing the brass that they needed more would be hard. But if that was what she needed.
"That's better than handing me a phase pistol and telling me to 'Shoot first and don't worry about questions later'," Sam responded, but she was still nervous. Danger wasn't her favorite, though she was in deep space where things tended to go wrong. Hell, any day she wasn't part of a small explosion or fire was a miracle.
"I mean, I could do it on my own," Sam clarified. "I just imagine it would speed things up a lot. And I don't like to lolly gag on a project. The more help the better."
Elizabeth coughs and looks up at the woman "Have you seen my Momma?"
Sam, unaware there was anyone around that wasnât her height, was startled to see the small girl standing at her feet.
âUh,â she stammered, âIâm afraid I havenât seen your mother. Iâm very sorryâŠ.MissâŠ.er, Iâm sorry who are you?â
Travis got all his stories from Hoshi. Now everything made sense. She knew Travis had been talking about kids lately, and she knew he wanted some. But she just wasnât ready. Not yet. âI see,â Sam answered as they walked.
âNo thatâs perfectly alright,â Sam agreed. Better to be on T'Polâs good side any day of the week. âIf sheâs not there then I can always call her on the comms.â
âI like doing science with Momma though, itâs fun and sometimes sheâll bring back a soil sample or a rock from one of the planets she visits and we get to look at it together.â Elizabeth grins.Â
Elizabeth coughs into her arm before nodding. âOkay, you donât think she went back to our ship do you?â
"Science is the best," Sam agreed. "And T'Pol has always been very good at it. I guess that's why they named her the Science Officer of Enterprise." Sam frowned. That job was supposed to be hers, once upon a time. But one thing led to another which led to another which led to a drunken conversation between her and her captain now. She didn't think Elizabeth needed to hear that particular story.
"I'm not sure why she'd be back there, but I can stay with you until we find her, if that would make you feel better?"
"Seein' as you aint part of my crew, and I'm not in a coma, or dead, I'm gonna have to ask you to step back to the other side of the yellow line and away from the engine." Trip calls from where he's cleaning the plasma coils (cxmmandertxcker)
Sam frowned, she wasn't used to being groused at in the engineering room. But seeing as this wasn't her ship she did as requested and stepped back. "Pardon me, Commander. Was just taking a tour of Enterprise. It's been so long since I've been here that I'd forgotten what it all looks like.
//Sorry I haven't been around. I've had issues with my anxiety lately but I'll try to get stuff done tomorrow. I'm really sorry guys!
The word transport automatically made Sam imagine herself trying to work on a small freighter but she brushed it off. As a kid thatâs sometimes where his dad had to do a lot of his work, if alternative transportation wasnât available. Equipment was fairly easy to take along, but it was nice to know labs were already being provided and that she wouldnât have to pack anything.
âWait, am I going to be in any real danger, am I?â Sam asked apprehensively. Not that she hadnât been in danger before, but Sam was hoping to go at LEAST two weeks before getting shot at again.
She noticed the look on the doctorâs face and wondered what she was thinking. Probably not what sheâd actually be doing, but it was likely to be close enough. Though as she was stood there, Merri realised exactly how silly it sounded when she said it.
âThatâs what Iâm gonna be there to prevent. Weâre not expecting you to be though.â Danger was for the officers and agents, not for their hired help. Thatâs what she was hoping at least.
"Oh I see." Sam just had this feeling she was going to get shot at. From past experience, if there was even the smallest percentage that she could get shot at, she got shot at.
"Well if I'm going to go, then I'm probably going to need the help of Lieutenant Reynolds." Maybe she could even use him as a human shield.
//Sorry that took so long. It's been a long week.

âUh,â she stammered, âIâm afraid I havenât seen your mother. Iâm very sorryâŠ.MissâŠ.er, Iâm sorry who are you?â
âOh that makes sense I suppose.â Travis sure talked a lot about Elizabeth, but that could have been stories from other people.
âWe donât have any experiments or chemicals out right now,â Sam said. âRight now itâs strictly documentation time. Every three months we go through old files and reports and clean them up, shorten them, or delete obsolete ones. No need to take up more room than absolutely necessary.â Sam studied the girl closely. âStill, you could always wait outside the door while I check around if that would make you feel better.â
âI spend more time with Ms. Hoshi then Mr. Travis.â She says. âMs. Hoshi gives me language lessons sometimes, I like her Vulcan writing lessons more then Mommaâs.âÂ
âWell⊠okay but Momma says Iâm not allowed so Iâd rather wait outside if thatâs alright.â She nods. âWhat if Mommaâs not there? Then what happens?â She chews her lip nervously, her blue eyes flick around the corridor again. âDo we go look somewhere else?âÂ
Travis got all his stories from Hoshi. Now everything made sense. She knew Travis had been talking about kids lately, and she knew he wanted some. But she just wasn't ready. Not yet. "I see," Sam answered as they walked.
"No that's perfectly alright," Sam agreed. Better to be on T'Pol's good side any day of the week. "If she's not there then I can always call her on the comms."
âNo problem,â Sam said, standing up as well. She bit her lip and wondered about even asking her next question. She had no idea where the labs were. Were they on Earth? That could mean a nice little home visit with a few friends.
âAt the risk of sounding completely stupid, where ARE your labs?â She asked.
âIt is really important.â She nodded, because this meant more than the scientist could understand right now. Sheâd get it eventually though. âThe ones weâre using right now are on Deneva colony. The full labs are in San Francisco, but weâd be a bit far from where the crime happened. Iâll fill you in on the rest on the transport.âÂ

Being abused can seriously affect your ability to distinguish between ânot obviously pleasedâ and âobviously displeasedâ because abusers go from Neutral to Hostile for absolutely no discernible reason, and eventually you start worrying that everyone is going to be like that and you start feeling this urge to make absolutely sure that the people you actually care about arenât mad or upset, because to you, âthereâs no evidence that theyâre not angryâ is the same as âthereâs evidence that they are angryâ
//I'll try to respond to everyone today. I got about 4 hours of sleep last night so I can't promise. I'm pretty exhausted.
Elizabeth coughs and looks up at the woman "Have you seen my Momma?"
Sam, unaware there was anyone around that wasnât her height, was startled to see the small girl standing at her feet.
âUh,â she stammered, âIâm afraid I havenât seen your mother. Iâm very sorryâŠ.MissâŠ.er, Iâm sorry who are you?â
âNever mentioned me?!â Sam asked, eyes wide. She brushed it off, wondering why he wouldnât have ever mentioned their relationship, but maybe that wasnât a conversation to have with a child. âIâm Doctor Samantha Owens, but you can just call me Sam if you want.â
âWell, Iâm headed to the lab, and since itâs TECHNICALLY my call who goes in and out of the labs since I run them, I think you could come check them out with me for your mom.â Sam frowned, wondering what Captain Hernandez would think. âBut you canât leave my side and you canât touch anything. Promise?â
âWell I donât talk to him a lot, Iâm not allowed on the bridge and my time is at 9 so I donât really see him.â She shrugs. âIâll call you Dr. Owens if thatâs okay?âÂ
âUm⊠Iâm not allowed in the lab, I could get really sick.â She mutters, she was pretty sure not being allowed in the lab had more to do with not having any immune system then anything else, but either way her mother wouldnât be happy. âIâm not sure Iâm allowed in the lab, this isnât even my shipâŠâÂ
"Oh that makes sense I suppose." Travis sure talked a lot about Elizabeth, but that could have been stories from other people.

"Still, you could always wait outside the door while I check around if that would make you feel better."
âIâm sure the temporary leave wouldnât be an issue,â Sam said, picking up her PADD again. âIâve got to wrap up this experiment, shouldnât take more than a few hours. Half a day at the most.â She tapped the sides of the small device so that Merri would know what she was talking about. âIâd leave it to Lieutenant Reynolds but I imagine heâd blow up half the lab if I did.â
âI need to go get you clearance to our lab, thank you, commander. This means weâre not gonna have a huge delay in our case.â She smiled and stood up. âIf you contact Starfleet Security when youâre ready and ask for Lieutenant Brody. Iâll come and get you.â
"No problem," Sam said, standing up as well. She bit her lip and wondered about even asking her next question. She had no idea where the labs were. Were they on Earth? That could mean a nice little home visit with a few friends.
"At the risk of sounding completely stupid, where ARE your labs?" She asked.
Sam forced a grin away. When she thought of Mr. Reed she couldnât imagine him recommending her without at least a little resentment. Not that the Lieutenant and Doctor Owens didnât get along, but she and her partner in crime, Travis played a rather nasty prank on Malcolm last time they met. âWell itâs always nice to be well thought of,â Sam said. âIâd be more than happy to help. Tell me what Iâm going to be looking for.â
Merri saw the smile that ghosted the commanderâs lips as she mentioned Malcolm and made a mental note to ask him about it when she got the chance. She then needed to explain it as simply as she could in public. âI have reason to believe our in-house expert is⊠compromised, on this case. So heâs been put on enforced leave for a week. We need to know exactly what chemicals weâre dealing with and where they came from. I know itâs not strictly your area of expertise, but weâre desperate. We can get you the temporary leave from your CO.â
"I'm sure the temporary leave wouldn't be an issue," Sam said, picking up her PADD again. "I've got to wrap up this experiment, shouldn't take more than a few hours. Half a day at the most." âOh sweetie a very, very long time ago.â Sam frowned at the memory for a moment before shaking her head to send it away. âYou were too young to remember it, in fact. Ensign Mayweather has told me a lot about you, however.â
Sam sighed, then shook her head. âI havenât seen your parents all day. Any ideas where they were working today?â
âMr. Travis told you about me?â She raises a dark eyebrow. âMr. Travis has never mentioned you. Whatâs your name?â
âWell Daddyâs not in the engine room, cause I was just there. I fell asleep and he was gone and if Mommaâs on the bridge Iâm not allowed there at allâŠâ She frowns trying to think. âMomma could be in the lab but Iâm also not allowed in there. I donât know where Daddy could be but heâs definitely not with MommaâŠâÂ
"Never mentioned me?!" Sam asked, eyes wide. She brushed it off, wondering why he wouldn't have ever mentioned their relationship, but maybe that wasn't a conversation to have with a child. "I'm Doctor Samantha Owens, but you can just call me Sam if you want."

âElizabeth.â She sneezes into the arm of her dress and tilts her head back to look up at the woman. âIâm lookinâ for Commander T'Pol.â
Elizabethâs blue eyes study the woman carefully, trying to decide if the woman will be any help. Elizabeth wasnât actually sure how sheâd gotten here, sheâd come over to Columbia with her father, but sheâd fallen asleep in a corner of the engine room only to wake up not feeling well at all. So sheâd gone looking for one of her parents only to realize she wasnât on the Enterprise at all, and that she was quite lost. Coughing again she looks around the corridor and then back to the woman.
âCommander Tucker works too just not both of them at the same time.â She mutters, both her parents at the same time didnât always end well these days.
Sam wanted to smack herself in the head with the palm of her hand. Of course this was Elizabeth. Of course she was the daughter of her friend and colleague Trip Tucker. She hadnât seen the young girl in so long she didnât recognize her. But upon closer look at the face she could see both parents clearly.
âOh Elizabeth,â Sam said with a smile. âI didnât recognize you youâve gotten so big!â
âYouâve met me?â Elizabeth studies the woman another moment and is almost certain she has no idea who she is. She backs up a step or two so she can get a better look at the womanâs face âIâm sorry ma'am but I donât know who are⊠Iâd just like to find Momma or DaddyâŠâ
