DIY sewing project : 10 Step Instructions Asymmetrical crop blouse
DIY Design: Asymmetrical crop blouse out of a large Men's dress shirt.
Step 1: Lay out Shirt making sure fabric lays flat , Iron if needed. Its very important fabric is flat , that way when you cut it it will be straight and even.
Step 2: Cut the sleeves to the length you prefer. Here i cut the sleeves at a slant. I didn't want the sleeves to be so boxy and it also adds a more feminine touch. Start close to the inseam and cut straight up in a line.
Step 3: Fold Shirt in half to make sure that both sides are cut the same amount. Make sure sleeve lengths are symmetrical.
Step 4: Fold fabric over to create a seam using pins to hold it in place, make sure seam is even all around. Start about a 1/2 inch from the edge and pin all around.
Repeat on opposite side and fold over again to make sure sides match!
Notice how the sleeves match in length and adjust accordingly if they are off.
Step 5: Turn shirt inside out and begin to sew seam edge, go all the way around until stitches match up from beginning to end.
Make sure to take pins out of fabric while you work. Pins can break the sewing machine needle if caught in a stitch.
Step 6: Make a second seam stitch to add more structure to sleeve. (Optional) Then cut off excess fabric from the inside seam.
Step 7: Lay Fabric flat again, Iron if needed. Its time to cut asymmetrical bottom. Start at last button and cut across front and angle the end of each cut.
Your shirt should know look like this, adjust according to how hi and low you want the bottom. Here i went for a slight slant. The more you cut the less buttons you end up with so i started at the bottom of the last button.
It's very important to cut off original seam before you make your new seam. Make a nice clean edge.
Step 8: Turn shirt inside out and begin to sew seam edge, go all the way around until stitches match up from beginning to end.
Your shirt should know look like this, adjust according.
Step 9: Cut off access fabric and tada you are all DONE!!
Now we have a more feminine sleeve and a nice Hi-low shirt, style however you desire. Here are some style ideas with my other thrift store finds.
Pair with some accessories such as earrings/ bracelets and a headband.
I find it really fun to alter clothes i find from the thrift store or hand me downs , it allows you to personalize and make things your own.
