Hi all!! I have a handful of asks in my inbox about testing, and I just want to let you guys know i WILL be responding soon to get EGO into more testing hands! I have not ghosted your asks :D
I just want to do a cursory furrowed-brow test at my code file and test it in-game again before sending it out to a new wave of testers. For the record, I will be free for the summer in about a week!
Hey, could you please tell me when your mod for The Sims 4 with improved horse genetics will be available? I’m not looking forward to anything as much as this. I’m counting down the days until it’s released. Sending you a big hug ❤️
I've actually been thinking about this mod recently(after school sucked me back into electrical engineering hell) and i want to assure my lovely askers that I do plan on releasing this mod publicly soon!
I actually feel tremendously bad that I haven't made a lot of updates, but I want to assure you guys that i am passionate about how bad sims 4 horses are
Thank you so much for this project! I am always a huge fan of these types of mods for all the sims animals and so glad someone has gone to the trenches to do so for TS4! If you still need beta testers I am open. I have past experience with beta testing for video games and have endless free time to spare
I am absolutely delighted you're interested!! I'm absolutely looking for more testers. Just a few days of dedicated testing has revealed a lot!
For example, @plasma-tree and I have identified some really interesting features of the mod already(like generated coats -mostly- being recolorable, and custom paint passing on) and found some things to tweak. I'd be happy to have more testers.
Heyyyy i saw your blog ! This is literally the one mod i had hoped someone would make when the horse ranch pack was revealed! I would love to support in any way i can, so let me know if you still need testers! Kudos to you for bringing this life, and good luck!
I'm so happy this is a mod people want!! I'm super surprised it's never been done before, honestly.
I'd love for you to test it! I'll message you will the details!
hey there, are you still looking for testers? I do a lot of animal breeding in the game and I have a LOT of free time. I'd love to help out and I'm really thrilled to see someone doing this mod.
I sure am!! (You're actually the first to ask!)
I've just finished my beta tester documents and the mod file itself, so everything is all ready to go. If I can message you with that info, I shall!
Thank you for your support and interest in my mod!
Hello, all! I come with great news regarding the Equine Genetics Overhaul mod(EGO for short). For those who don't know, I am developing a mod for The Sims 4 that creates variable, semi-realistic horse coat genetics. You can read my announcement post here.
Lining the screen above and below are just a few foals I was able to quickly test. You can view for yourself the differences---some slight, some really cool.
TL;DR: successful horse coat genetics generation and application has been achieved. I will be responding to beta tester inquiries soon, once I set up an infrastructure for receiving feedback.
More details on development under the cut!
You may be asking why all of the foals came out as tobiano. That is because I currently have a semi-realistic genetics system going at the moment, and tobiano is considered a true dominant gene, and will show up 90% of the time when it is present in either parent. You may ask me, aali, what happened to waiting on realistic genetics?
Well, I got random layer assignments working and they were BORING. They looked nothing like the parents, aside from color. So I decided to dive deeper in with a full genetics system, separating dominant/incomplete/recessive genes from modifiers and decals, and using a rudimentary homozygous/heterozygous classification.
White markings(which I classify as 'decals') such as white socks and face markings are semi-inherited. Two parents with decals are more likely to pass on the decal gene, but the foal has a generous chance of grabbing a decal outside of their parent's. That's why one foal has a bald face here.
There is also a weighted map of the 'complexity' of generated coats, ranging from simplistic combinations to every-layer-under-the-sun-and-more. That's why one foal is simply solid under tobiano, but the others have white socks, colored socks, roaning, and more. That happens at random, too.
I want my mod to be as Maxis-Match as possible at the moment, so there are no options or game intrusions other than reassigning a coat at birth. If there is interest in more realistic genetics, this may change in the future via an interaction with a hay feeder, or something. I'm considering implementing features like lethal white syndrome, but of course, I wouldn't want people's foals to die willy-nilly. I'd also have to make genes a little more persistent, as right now genes are reverse-engineered at call time and disappear when the foals are done generating. Big venture!
Right now, I'm focusing on tuning the genetics for best playability, which means the mod is ready to be tested by other users. If you're interested, you can send me a message, and I'll get back to you when we're ready! (I want to warn you against installing new script mods in saved games you really care about. There is a very low to nil chance of corruption because of how my mod is coded, but always be aware!)
🎯Updated Progress Map:
Short-Term
Mix colors from both parents Complete!
Initiate re-coating directly after birth(preserving internal game genetics logic, for safety) Complete!
logically apply layer patterns(i.e., tobiano masks all color)
implement identical offspring(twins currently are not twins)
make pattern color inheritance more variable(between parents)
fine-tune genetics for all coat genes
extensive testing!
Mid-Term
Add chance of an unrelated pattern adding or replacing a coat layer Complete!
Mix patterns and colors from both parents
Introduce color mixing/color drift
Handle paint layers differently
implement color drift
Long-Term
contemplate a traits-based and/or hidden layer genetics system
make settings configurable
Introduce a white marking system that mimics real-life genetics(overo, tobiano, splash, etc) Implemented: needs tuning
Tune this mod for dogs/cats Scrapped: not my focus
Equine Genetics Overhaul | Dev Update + Looking For Testers
Hello, horse fans!
For those who don't know, I am currently developing a Sims 4 Equine Genetics Overhaul mod(EGO for short). More on that here.
As seen in the above, I've managed to hook onto the horse birth event and re-assign horse coats as they pop out. Heck, they even instantiate after EGO is already applied, so the effect is pretty seamless!
Seeing that I've got the main bulk of the mod's alpha version ironed out, I am looking for testers to give the mod a spin this week. If you're interested, message me!
TS4 Equine Genetics Overhaul: a project announcement
Hello, my fellow horse girls.
Did Horse Ranch promise you the world, then break your heart with its lacklustre forethought for the horse breeding system?
Did you start a legacy breeding farm save, only for things to get boring really fast when you realized foals are just copies of one of their parents?
Well, hopefully that will be no more! I have officially begun developing an Equine Genetics Overhaul mod that takes the patterns and colors of parent A and mixes them thoroughly with parent B, to create an offspring unlike any you've seen before.
Details under the cut!
EGO: Advanced coat inheritance for TS4 horses
Who are you?
Hi! I'm aali. I'm an electrical engineering major, character artist, and horse enthusiast. Dare I say, an equestrian. Or horse girl. Whatever. Point is, I'm a big horse freak and I've worked with them for a while now. I want to bring equine genetics to The Sims 4 as a personal passion project.
What is the goal of this mod?
In the first public release, EGO will hook onto the birth of a foal and re-roll their coat according to parent genetics, swapping coat colors between the parent horses and passing down patterns.
Is this actually possible?
Yeah, and it's way easier than you think! Horse coats are stored as layers, not one flat image. Mixing genetics is as simple as extracting the color of one pattern and applying it to the foal's inherited pattern. That is the quick and dirty, very simplistic version, though I'd, of course, love to refine the idea further.
Additionally, since this mod can go through a lot of development before adding custom content, it should have a very low risk to your save files! All it does is use in-game variables and resources to re-assign CAS data.
Current development endeavors have successfully proven that horses can have custom coat layer information from two different horses applied in-game. See the example below.
How can I support you?
For now, keep an eye on my blog! Any mod updates I will post here. You can ask me questions and follow me to see what I'm doing. Or not :D
🎯 MOD GOALS
Short-Term
Mix colors from both parents
Initiate re-coating directly after birth(preserving internal game genetics logic, for safety)
Mid-Term
Mix patterns and colors from both parents
Add chance of an unrelated pattern adding or replacing a coat layer
Introduce color mixing/color drift
Handle paint layers differently
Long-Term
Reduce ugliness of game-generated foals(things will no doubt get... weird). Or, maybe I'll embrace it.
Introduce a white marking system that mimics real-life genetics(overo, tobiano, splash, etc)
a separate, full realistic rehaul of the horse genetics system, featuring base coats, dilutions, roan/rabico, pattern genes(like apaloosa), and markings
Tune this mod for dogs/cats (it probably already works for them)
---> consider this to be a FAR in the future possibility, not something I can currently dangle over your head.
Thanks for listening! I'll be sure to keep you guys updated on my progress. That's all for now!
