Gonna be stepping away from writing to deal with some sucky health stuff/ stress induced heart problems. I will hopefully be back to music writing in a few months, but unfortunately this particular blog is gonna be getting the bolt-gun and shutting down permanently.

Long story short: I intended this as some combination of movie review blog and more personal writing and I've been abysmally bad at putting any time into that. Time to put it down and focus my efforts into getting healthy again.

Charles East/ Eva O

I'm a big Eva O fan, especially her stuff with Shadow Project and Super Heroines so this track caught me in a pretty receptive mood. Gotta admit I've never heard Charles East before but I like what I'm hearing here... Shimmery droning meets ethereal menace that makes me wish it was cold and rainy instead of 80 degrees outside on friggin' Halloween.

Life Pro Tip: When the fact you're in a band comes up in conversation and the random normie you're talking to asks if you make money doing music you can just say "yeah, we do ok" and there will be no follow up questions. Never.

'Cos the thing is, they don't actually care if you do, they just want to snicker at you if you say you don't cos it makes them feel better about wanting to commit suicide in a cubicle 40+ hours a week.

Uniform

I really like Uniform's brand of weirdo industrial sludgepunk metal, but at some point it struck me that their singer sounds a fucking LOT like an absolutely enraged Rowdy Roddy Piper and I've never been able to un-hear it...

That said, "American Standard" is still probably gonna be in my top 5 records of this year.

Starbelly

Thinking a lot about the past lately, and weirdly bummed about a dear friend's suicide more than 20 years ago... I think part of it Is that I don't have many close friends anymore, and part of it is that we just finally finished/ released our album and I think she would have been stoked on it and it really sucks to not be able to hang out and give her a copy.

I dunno, I guess it's not weird to be bummed about losing a dear friend, but it's an old wound at this point... You'd think it would have scabbed over by now.

The last time we ever hung out we listened to Pig Destroyer's "Prowler in the Yard" in her car, it had just come out and we thought it was the greatest fucking thing ever. Especially the track "Starbelly."

I still think back and wonder if I missed something in her tone of voice, if there was something I could have said or done that could have changed the godawful trajectory of what happened. I play that last day over and and over again in my head and always come up with nothing.

For a lot of years I was pretty sure I didn't like "Down on the Upside" but then they played this song at a friend of mine's funeral and it clicked with me in a pretty big way.

Shadow Master

If Rob Zombie wrote a Crow movie after watching a bunch of Tony Jaa flicks and tapped Neil Breen to direct it this would pretty much be the end result... And yeah, it's pretty fucking stupid, but it's like fun stupid where you can crack a beer, eat some popcorn, crack some jokes, and end up feeling like you had a pretty good time.

As opposed to the new Crow movie which is just a disappointing let down.

Been in kind of a warehouse rave-y mood today and ran across this video down that particular rabbit hole... Music rules and I hope this doesn't make me sound like a creepy old man but holy fuck this chick has some of the coolest biomech tattoos I've ever seen... I've always loved that mecha/ exoskeleton/ armor plate look and you don't see it around as much in 2024 as you did back in the early/ mid 90's. Really dig the way hers have the sacred geometry worked into them too.

I legit want to get one of my arms done up in a similar style but I don't have the thousands upon thousands of dollars it would take to make that happen.

Anyway, like I said: The music here rules... Super hard, super distorted, fairly minimal and hammered out over top of bondage/ gore visuals projected on a screen behind her. Kinda reminds me of Oprhx with the BPM ramped up.

King's Castle Land

Found a mini documentary about the weird little "theme park" that was located a town over from where I grew up.

This probably isn't interesting to anyone who isn't me, but I still think of this place even 30 years after it closed... I remember it feeling incredibly "old fashioned" even when I was a little kid back in the 80's, like you were walking around the faded memories of someone else's childhood.
