"shut up. just shut up." 𝜗ৎ rhett x ascendant (reader) for: @unwashed-dishes
𝜗ৎ cw: honestly this is purely a tiny crack fic. i'm sorry for nothing. i love this man and will be writing about him in the future.
River water mixed with Intacia's fertile soil is what's to blame for the squelching under your feet as you step forward, a heightened sense of vigilance as the dark jungle engulfs you in the energy that feeds the power you hold.
"Witch," a deep toned voice calls from a few feet in front of you, darkness making it rather difficult to make out the man you knew was with you, so it didn't really matter anyway.
"If you can speak to me, hunter, you can get me a damn lantern." Your tone is playful as you breathe out, attempting to steady yourself and avoid slipping on the muddy water. The Baroness would've winced at the mere imagination of being in this position.
"I'm not above killing you even if that means I die as well, Witch. How many times need I remind you that you are my captive -"
"Us dying together? Like, Titanic style? Romantiiiiiic, I'm down."
Rhett furrows his brows, annoyance overriding every other emotion you've invoked in the past hour - hell, even thirty minutes. "That's not even how Titanic happen-" he cuts himself off with a deeply comtemplative sigh, the word romantic, hitting him directly in the chest. "As I was trying to say, we have just about a mile left."
Bringing a hand to your chest, you sarcastically clutch pearls. "I was just starting to get emotionally attatched. How is it that my timing continues to get worse? You're like... an embodied bad omen."
You'd been making jokes and subtle innuendos your entire trip, realizing that it was the one thing that truly got under Rhett's skin, and you'd not-so-secretly secretly reveled in the light dusty rose that painted his cheeks every time.
Rhett, rolling his eyes, grumbles out an exhausted "Goddess" before turning to you, feet planted firm and frame intimidating by first glance. "You are such a brat. Shut up. Just shut up."
Dramatically flinching backward like you'd been struck, you sarcastically pout. Craning your neck up, you tilt your head before enunciating with hand movement. "'Kay, re-fucking-lax." You make it a point to look him up and down with the most deadpan look you can mock from him.
The man was stone, truly. His monotone presence seemed to carry a thousand other ones, all dripping into each other and thus making him somewhat indescribable.
So, in the rare moments the witch hunter showed emotion that wasn't pure disdain, you naturally kept note of it. It became sort of like a game to you. What else was there to do? Contemplate your last words before you stood trial?
Admittedly, you hadn't understood why the said disdain existed in the first place. While Rhett had given you a brief, emotionally charged rundown, his failure to let you speak your truth left you confused. Yet... a variant of sympathy had subtly settled into your chest. You'd hadn't necessarily learned your history. I mean, you'd remembered what you were told; but other than that, you'd never felt like you'd needed to.
A faint memory crossed your mind, promptly shutting your mouth, which Rhett silently thanked his lucky stars for.
"Good. You're finally listening."
Anyway, your mind was caught up in your perception of his emotions. It was rare you ever saw it, after all. Living in the Empire and whatnot. Raw anger that was obviously very complex in the sense it wasn't reserved just for you. Rhett's eyes, too, were swimming with memories that looked like they hurt to hold.
Huh. While you're actively kidnapped, sauntering through this lively forest that is imminently leading to your death, you're thinking about and trying to sort out your kidnappers emotions. Right...Maybe both you and Rhett should both be formally evaluated. You, for stockholm syndrome. Rhett, for whatever the hell it's called when you enjoy and find clarity killing people.
"And I'm not using a lantern because I'd prefer not to draw the attention of the animals who have an unwavering craving for human flesh." Rhett refutes your earlier statement with a flat tone, continuing forward.
"...That’s exactly how you lure other kinds of predators."
Despite it being dark, you know there's a vain on Rhett's forhead about to pop.
𝜗ৎ a's notes : the listeners personality is a bit melodramatic here, but i'm still trying to get a feel for her and rhett! this is lowkey just purely silly, sorry for the wait. also blog redo again!
