Chapter 15 Religion  Part 2
3.Is Marx’s critique of religion as the “opiate of masses” relevant to the event you attended?
-The event I attended is relative because the people in Baptist Church are very active and engaged in the service. Its very important to them and is very evident that they believe and feel strong in their practice.
4.Can you identify particular symbols (Geertz) unique to this religious community and determine their meaning? What do you think gives them their power and authority (Asad)?
-The African American Hymn book gives the black christians a spiritual sense .The bread in the communion serves as a symbol of Jesus’s body and the wine serves as a symbol of Jesus’s blood.Â
5.How does power make itself evident during your visit? What power relationships did you observe?
-The Pastor has evident power because he wears a robe , they get the best chairs , and as well have assistances that wipe their face with a napkin.
-The Ushers have the power to turn people away .They can tell you to move to the back and you’re in the front if you’re a disturbing or distracting the service.
6.Can you identify any ways in which globalization influences the religious beliefs and practices that you observe? Â
-I think the only way globalization would influence would be the technology starting to be used other than that the Baptist Church has not been plainly influenced . But the Baptist Church has influenced the communities near them.
The Dominican and Haitian Crisis is extremely unfortunate. It is unfortunate that the Haitians are being treated inhumanely. The Haitians have every right to the land that they were born on and helped build up as the Dominicans. Personally, I believe that deeper investigations should be done to protect the citizenship of the Haitians because although the Dominican President claimed that the stripping of their identity is not happening, there has been very little evidence to support that claim. The article mentions the International Law and how it is being violated in the Dominican Republic. With the international law being broken, I feel like there should be more attention on the crisis. I feel as though the situation has been “swept under the carpet” for too long. It is time that the Haitian people are given the respect and justice they deserve.Â
Chapter 15 Fieldwork Assignment
3. Marx’s critique of religion as the “opiate of the masses” does not necessarily pertain to my experience at the church because I believe there was real contentment among the people in the church. More specifically, I believe that everyone who was in the church felt a sense of purpose for being there. Although their personal reasons may be different, I believe that the people felt a sense of “self” while being in the church. Therefore, I feel like the Marx’s critique did not pertain to my experience in the church.
4.  Some symbols that I identified in the church were: the cross, the bible, and the praying hand gesture. The significance of these symbols and items vary. The cross is greatly idolized in the christian religion. In terms of power, the cross holds great value because it is sacred. The cross is a powerful symbol because it is where Jesus was killed. The bible is another symbol that I recorded because it holds great value in the Christian community as well. The bible is the holy book and is extremely significant in terms of power because the bible is ultimately the power of the religion. Lastly a gesture that I saw frequently during my visit was the crossing of hands. The crossing of hands was significant because it is associated with praying. Praying doesn’t necessarily tied with power because in the Christian community, almost everyone prays.
5. Power made itself evident during my visit because I was able to identify who held greater power. In my specific case, I would say that God held the greatest power because everyone, even the priest submitted themselves to God. The next person with power would be Jesus and then the preacher. The preacher had some type of power because everyone listened to what the preacher had to say. In addition, the preacher was the one who facilitated the mass. The last section that I observed in terms of power was the people who attended the mass (including myself) I was at the bottom of this power spectrum because I had very little power when it came to the actual mass.
6. Globalization determined the influences on the religious practices and beliefs that I observed because it is the reason why people did certain things. More specifically, the use of the drums and other African Musical instruments is due, in part, to globalization. Globalization is responsible for the incorporation of these instruments because people from other parts of the globe brought their culture with them and then found a way to include their culture into their religion.

1. Describe the way power is balanced in each relationship you experience or observe.
Power is balanced in each relationship that I experience/observe because each individual has a different level of power based on the relationship that we have. For example, my professors have more power over me than my peers. My professor is responsible for educating me, but this responsibility also comes with power. They are able to discipline me if necessary and receive a certain level of respect. My peers on the other hand share a pretty equal amount of power. I like to look at the relationships I have with my classmates as a team effort. We are a team who share the same goal; to Learn! although my peers and I share the same level of power, I would say that there is some flexibility. In some cases, one person may take the responsibility of being a leader which would make them somewhat more “powerful” than the rest of us.
2. How is power organized? Can you see the intersections of age, gender, income, race, religion, sexuality, or citizenship?
Power in my relationships are often organized by age. In the interactions that I have, I feel like the older a person is, the more knowledgeable they may be. I look at Knowledge as power because If you know more than me, You have an advantage. In my relationships/interactions specifically, My professors are at the very top of this chain. working down the list, I would say that my roommate is the next one and then of course my peers. I feel like for each relationship, the power is mostly determined by age. Upperclassmen tend to have more respect then underclassman.Â
3. What political negotiations are present in these relationships?
I would say that on a political level, the only real political negotiations present in the relationships I have are between myself and the professors. I would say that there are political negotiations in this relationship because their main purpose is to educate me and not to push their personal beliefs on me. I would tie this back to political negotiations because they may follow politics and have a strong opinion of one specific group but they cannot enforce that upon the students.
4. Consider how these power dynamics were established and how they might be changed.
The power dynamics might be changed if I had more power. This is really unlikely, but in the case that I did, it would definitely change the relationships that I have. I feel like it would specifically change the relationships that I have with my professors because right now the norm is that the professor usually has more power than the student. So to flip that would probably be an adjustment for both parties. However, like mentioned earlier, that is extremely unlikely. So the chances of the power dynamics changing is probably rare.Â
5. To deepen your understanding of the power of the state, make a list of all the ways you encounter the state in a given day. These may be at home, at school, in the office, or on the street. Representations of the state on television and radio, as well as in newspapers or movies, all contribute to the construction of the state as concrete, real, and powerful.
laws regarding what you can do based on your age (21+)
rules regarding driving (no license, no driving)
speed limits
general rules of the road
rules regarding speech (limited)
rules regarding weapons (limited)
6. How do these representations of the state reinforce the conception of the state as the primary institutional form through which social relations are experienced?
These representations of the state reinforces the conception of the state as a primary institutional form through which social relations are experienced because the rules are somewhat flexible depending on who you are. For example, some police officers might take advantage of their power and not follow the rules of the road. In another case, someone who is wealthy might not follow the rules that are set for them because they can easily buy their way out of things like a speeding ticket or in some cases can afford very good lawyers. I encounter State every day and choose to follow the rules that are set, but for others, they might not follow these rules and regulations because they can afford not to with their power.

WHAT IS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWERN RELIGION AND POWRR
https://www.quora.com/What-is-the-relationship-between-religion-and-power
in this article the author speaks on how religion itself is governed by power and how there are two types of beliefs. One in which the religion can’t function with out an appointed person being in charge like a Priests or special people by birth or induction without Catholicism, Hinduism and Shia Islam are like this.
Then there’s the religion that where the people conducting the services etc. are ordinary, if learned, people doing a job: many protestant churches are like this. The article entirely speaks on the power used in religion to separate the “ruler” from the people.
An Islamist group in Pakistan has agreed to end nationwide protests following the resignation of government minister Zahid Hamid. Supporters of the hard-line Tehreek-i-Labaik had accused the minister of breaking strict laws on blasphemy, which in Pakistan is considered a serious offence.
In Class Assignment : Power & ReligionÂ
This article links power and religion together because in the interview Imtiaz Gul sees that Islamism is being used as a “Political Instrument” in Pakistan . In the interview he says that most of the politicians are using Islamism to their advantages and to pursue their own agendas which has given smaller groups a rise . Smaller groups as well use their religion as a instrument to do the things that they do.This is why most of these countries that are based or focused on a certain religion are structured as is .The people placed in their governments are using their power of their religion to rise and  control these people in their countries.
Power and Religion are related in this article because the in the article, the writer discusses how many religious leaders are like “superstars”. A lot of times these religious leaders use this platform to address problems that are going on in their communities. In addition, these religious leaders usually have some type of connections with their local and federal government which allows them to actually make the changes that need to be made in their communities. This article specifically talks about the good that comes with the affiliation of religion and Power, but it can also be bad in some cases. Depending on the religious leaders true intentions, they may try to use this power more in their favor and this can be problematic.
Fieldwork Assignment Ch. 13
Domingo Delgado
Intro to Anthropology
Dr. Howell
11/18/17
Brief: For this Assignment, I interviewed my friend Claris Mateo Lebron. She is 18 years old and attends Morgan State University. She is from the Dominican Republic.Â
I am from the Dominican Republic, a nation located on the island of Hispaniola. The island is shared with Haiti. To most people, the Dominican Republic is a dream vacation spot. The tropical weather, palm trees, and long-lasting sun are just some of the many reasons why the Dominican Republic may seem like a dream location. However for the millions of people who inhabit the island, this is not the case.
I came to America when I was about 10 years old. I do not remember much about it, but I do remember the effect that coming to America had on me. In terms of bridges and barriers. I was faced with many barriers. One of them being language. Language was a barrier for me because Spanish was my first language, and in America, English is mostly spoken in schools. Another barrier for me was Culture. Culture was a barrier for me because there were things that I was not used to doing. I had to adjust to these cultural changes. However, although I conformed to American culture, I am still in tune with my Dominican roots. A bridge that encouraged me to come to America is the fact that I had a lot of family in America. That connection made coming to America a lot easier.
I would say that I was Pulled to come to America. My family intentionally came to America because for us, and many other immigrants, we had high hopes for the “American Dream”. My family moved to America in hopes to find new opportunities. Also because Success in Dominican Republic is extremely difficult if you do not have the right resources.
When it comes to gender roles in the Dominican Republic vs. America, I would say that in America, Women are more open to taking on responsibilities and bigger roles. Whereas in the Dominican Republic, women are very submissive to their husbands and are looked at as nurturers and not providers. In other words, they do what their husbands ask them to do.Â
For second generational children in my family, I feel like the expectations are tougher because our family pushes more pressure on us to be successful. The expectations for us are higher because they want us to take advantage of the resources that America has to offer. Especially since these resources were not accessible to them back in the Dominican Republic.

Forbes 17th Richest Billionaire in the world Alice Walton (Wal-Mart Heir; Chairman, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art). Net Worth: $33.8 Billion
Alice Walton and her family have their own foundation; The Walton Family Foundation. The Family’s foundation is considered a heavyweight in the worlds non-profits with just under $2 billion in assets. The organization has contributed to the National economy because Walton has invested her wealth to: education reform, the environment, and the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art (In which she funded about $1.2 Billion)Â
Walton has contributed to the Global Economy by deciding with her fellow Chairmen to build Walmart’s across the globe. Today, Walmart operations over 1,700 retail units over 59 banners in 28 countries. Walmart employs 2.3 million people around the world. 1.8 million of the 2.3 million people that Walmart employs work here in the U.S. The effect that the production of Walmart’s in other countries around the world is the creation of jobs for people in those regions. These new job opportunities help their local economy, but most importantly it helps the global economy.
During the 2016 Presidential election, Alice Walton and her family supported Hillary Clinton. The Walton family actually donated $714,000 to Hillary Clinton. The donation to the Clinton’s Campaign shows the longstanding ties between the two families. The donations also show Alice Walton and her family’s political views/ relationship to politics.

Fieldwork Assignment on Lineages
My family tree can be interpreted in many different ways. As a result, I decided to break it down so that it can easily be understood. I broke my family tree/lineage into education, wealth, and upbringing.Â
In terms of education, when looking at my map, it can be broken down based on my family’s education level. My grandparents did not graduate high school because when the came to America, they had to work to make sure their family was fed and there was a roof over their heads. However, all of my aunts and uncles on both sides graduated high school. Of the four children on my father’s side, my aunt was the only one to attend college. On my mother’s side, my uncle was the only one to attend college. Neither of my parent’s attended college, but my sister and I both graduated high school and are currently enrolled in 4-year universities (UCONN and Morgan State)
The map can also be interpreted through wealth. On my father’s side, my grandparents were married. My grandfather worked for the State of Connecticut (now retired) and my grandmother had her own bridal store in our hometown. This relates to wealth because their hard work allowed them to purchase their own home in West Hartford, Connecticut. When my grandmother passed away this past August, her children inherited some of her wealth that she accumulated over her lifetime. However, if you look at my mother’s side, she grew up in a single-parent household. Her mother had to work multiple jobs to support her four children. In terms of inherited wealth, her children will probably not get much because there is not enough wealth to be distributed to them.
Lastly, my family lineage map can be interpreted based on upbringing. What I mean by this is the way they were raised. On my father’s side, my family was more privileged because of the resources that they had access to. They were able to attend better schools, had better connections, and were sometimes even spoiled by my grandparents. Whereas on my mother’s side, my mother and her siblings were taught to work for what they want and other was ever just handed to them.Â
All three ways have affected me because I have been given the opportunity to see what it is to be raised by both sides and I also see the way these things affected my parents. More specifically, my father is the parent who often spoils me and my mother is usually the one who encourages me to work for what I want. In addition, both my parents encouraged my sister and I to attend college.
