Hogwarts prom, 2021, the worst thing that you’d expect to happen would be some unexpected pregnancies or teenagers with magical hangovers that last a week long. Not the start of the Apocalypse.
Roxanne and Dominic had mutually decided to go together, although Roxanne had a undisputable objection to slow dancing and the handholding and cute gestures lasted approximately twenty seconds before the both of them got sick of it. But there was booze, and they liked each other’s company, especially in dimly lit corners of the Great Hall where the supervising teachers couldn’t see them. So at least there was that.
It happened about two hours into the party, just when Roxanne was commenting to Dom that surely this whole ordeal couldn’t get much worse than this, the screaming started somewhere on the dancefloor and was immediately drowned out by the heavy bassline of the music. No-one thought much of it, it was prom after all, just people getting overly excited. But Roxanne was about as paranoid as they came, and so to Dom’s embarrassment she clambered onto their table, peering over the heads of hundred of loved up and drunk teenagers to see what the commotion was about.
“Dom..” She started, looking down at him with wide eyes. “We need to get the fuck out of here, now.” The boy looked up at her tiredly, there had been too many instances when Roxanne had freaked out over nothing for him to really take her seriously. “What happened? Oh no wait, let me guess, Voldemort staged his return to coincide with the Hogwarts prom.” She glared and hopped down from the table, grabbing him by the arm and pulling him to the exit, already reaching into her bag to hoist out her trusty beaters bat. “Don’t be such a fuckhead, just listen to me for once alright? We need to alert everyone to get out right now.” Dominic eyed the bat with some suspicion as he was pulled along, and dug his heels into the floor to bring them to a stop. “What the hell, Rox? Why the fuck did you bring a bat to prom? What’s going on?” As he spoke there were more screams, and this time the crowd started moving in a way that wasn’t natural, the dancers at the edges backing away and running for the nearest exits. Dominic turned around to gape at the sight, peering through the neon lights until he finally saw it, a girl covered in blood and yanking at the body of her date, tearing him apart and stuffing his flesh into her mouth. “Now if you don’t want me to do that to you, and believe me I’m tempted,” Roxanne hissed, giving Dominic a firm tug. “You’ll fucking move.”
They had to fight their way out of the door, Roxanne barking orders at curious ghosts who loitered overhead, telling them to wake up the teachers that weren’t here, telling them they needed to make sure that the school was secure. The two of them got together with four others to throw together a makeshift barricade down the hall, helping the last of the prom kings and queens to scale it before letting loose with all the weapons they had at their disposal. It soon became apparent that magic was doing absolutely nothing, and so with a beaters bat and a sword stolen from one of the suits of armour the two of them ran at the oncoming storm of the dead, to protect Maria, to protect the Weasleys and the Potters, and to protect each other.
