Reward v/s Punishment System
Another method that i don't like in Universal Academy Charter School is their kids point system and how it is demotivating kids from being creative and interactive. UA (Universal Academy) uses a system that i call "Punishment System" where kids loose a point every time they do a bad job. on the other hand Valley Ranch uses a system that i call "Reward System" where kids gain a point every time they do a good job. Both sounds same right but here is the difference.
in Punishment Systems, Kids are more concerned about loosing a point which makes them less creative, less interactive and always worried about what actions will make them loose a point. This is stopping kids from being more creative. In a Reward System, Kids are more creative, interactive and always looking for ways to earn more points, their creativity and talent comes up. Here is our real experience. My kid has a science assignment to create a poster to safety in science lab. she chose to talk about safety glasses and her idea was to use picture of an "eye" instead of alphabet "I" but she was hesitant saying what if her teacher did not understand took away a point" but if only they had a Reward System, this is what my kid would have said, I may get an extra point for showing my creativity. The difference, in the Punishment System, kid is worried about loosing where as in Reward System kid is not worried about loosing but more interested in getting extra reward. Hope this gives all other parents an idea about which system to follow. My parents always followed "Punishment System" but I'm changing the system for my kids.

Free Picture and Video Backup
Here is a new year's present for you all. If you are looking for a simple free cloud backup for your pictures and videos then check out the latest version of Picasa from Google. The latest updates comes with a small utility called Auto Backup. once you set the folder or folders, it'll automatically backup all your pictures and videos. Google provided unlimited space as long as you accept their limit on the size. it also allows you to upload the largest size for a price. so just install/update your picasa and backup the data before its too late. Blocking site for kids safety and privacy
Here is a good service from OpenDNS.org that will automatically manage your internet access by blocking 'bad' sites. I am using this service from last 5 years and very happy. They can free and paid ($19.00/year) options, i am using free and it is more than enough for me. for free there are two options Classic : you manage the settings Family Shield : It comes pre-configured to block all the bad (adult) sites. give it a shot, its very simple to setup and use. I recommend you setup at the router level rather than for each device. This way not matter which device (IPad, Tablet, PC, MAC, Smart Phone, Kindle, SmartTV) you'll be protected. Automatically Logout of Gamil, Facebook when browser is closed
Gmail and Facebook has a feature that does not log you off when you close the browser. This is handy as long as you are not sharing the system with anyone. here is a tip to auto log you off when you close the browser. I'm using chrome as an example. 1. Click on the Menu (right top cornor ) and select settings.
2. Scroll to the bottom and click on Advance Settings
3. Click on Content Settings and change cookies to "Keep local data only until i quit my browser"
Note: This will clear all the cookies which mean it will not only log you off from gmail and facebook but all other web sites that store cookies will be removed. This is good for one reason that your privacy infomation is cleared.
