A quick guide for trans people who are using/ forced to use the disabled toilet due to transphobic bullshit in the UK when you wouldn’t otherwise need to do so. From a transgender wheelchair user who has given this topic a lot of thought.
Remember you are a guest in this space. I don’t know a single person who would rather you shit yourself or get assaulted than use the disabled toilet, but please remember that these toilets are built and designed for disabled people after a huge amount of campaigning and activism.
Don’t touch or move things you don’t need to. If you’re not familiar with how things work or why they are where they are just leave it be. The position of a bin might not mean anything to you but it could be really important to a wheelchair user who needs to change their tampon. Don’t touch things like grab rails either – while they’re fairly tough and you’re unlikely to cause any damage it’s not impossible and if you don’t touch it, you can’t break it.
Related, but important enough to have its own point: please don’t touch the red cord. Do not tie it up, do not wrap it around anything, don’t tuck it behind a bin. Don’t touch it (The only exception to this is to untie a cord that’s been tied up) If the cord doesn’t fall freely to the floor it could prevent a disabled person calling for help in an emergency. If you’re worried about accidentally pulling it there’s almost always at least one reset button in there with you. Press that and it cancels the alarm.
If possible allow other people waiting to go first. A lot of disabilities, both visible and less apparent, can cause problems with incontinence, urgency or pain that make it difficult for someone to wait to use the toilet. If there’s someone else in the queue and you are able to do so, offering to let them go first might really help them out.
If you want to get a radar key, get it from disability rights UK or give a small donation to a disability charity (again only if you’re able to). I’ve seen a couple of trans orgs giving away free radar keys and it’s unclear how they are being sourced. Knockoffs are common but only “real” RADAR keys are from Disability Rights UK and any profits help fund their charity work. Bear in mind that most disabled people also have to pay for these keys which are about £5. (Disability Rights UK say their keys are to be sold to disabled people or organisations only, this is a legal thing they have to say about VAT relief. There is no real way of following up how disabled someone who buys a radar key is because you don’t need to claim any benefits to be eligible for VAT relief and keys are a low value item that isn’t worth anyone looking into when things like adapted cars exist. Be gay, do crime, support disabled people having rights.)
Know the difference between a standard accessible toilet and a changing places toilet. Don’t use a changing places toilet if there is any other safe option. These have a different symbol and are bigger and fitted with extra equipment for severely disabled people and our carers. That equipment is more sensitive than anything you’ll find in a standard accessible toilet so if you do find yourself in one touch nothing. Especially don’t move the hoist (lifting equipment) as it can cause it to run out of power and make the whole space functionally useless if it’s not in the right space on the track. (To be fair this is an unlikely scenario as there aren’t that many of these toilets, but just in case)
Don’t suggest renaming accessible toilets. They’re primarily there for disabled people who can’t use an alternative, and disabled people will be looking for an accessible toilet. For most spaces you can look for an accessible toilet and have a good chance of finding a gender neutral space, but that doesn’t work the other way around. Calling it an “inclusive toilet” or “gender neutral toilet” tells me absolutely nothing about whether my wheelchair will fit.
^ great advice - especially getting to know the different kinds of access for changing places (which are rare and people plan their whole trip out round) and how we need them to stay called accessible or Disabled toilets to give anyone wanting to use the aids in them any chance of finding them or knowing what to expect.
I see so many ads for Radar keys saying they are special type or whatever on Instagram and always think jeez they must be making a large profit skimming money off disability rights uk to pay for those posts - like Echo says always buy from Disability Rights UK.
Disabled people and trans people have many struggles in common and this is great info if you only belong to the trans side.
So. For those of you who didn't pay attention to the details of the legal spat between Krafton and Unknown Worlds, allow me to give you some details of the finest legal comedy of a generation.
Krafton CEO looks at the hype surrounding Subnautica 2, goes over the contract between Krafton and Unknown Worlds, realizes he'll have to pay out bonuses and freaks out because shelling out those bonuses will make him look like a pushover.
CEO goes to his legal department, asks them to come up with a plan to weasel out of paying bonuses. Legal tells him the contract is iron-clad and to accept the loss.
CEO refuses to take the loss, asks ChatGPT for a plan. ChatGPT says the exact same thing the legal department did.
CEO demands a plan from ChatGPT, which dutifully spits out a plan at this point because clearly the CEO is a goddamn idiot.
CEO deletes the chat logs, failing to understand that 'delete' doesn't permanently remove things.
CEO follows plan, and is surprised when Unknown Worlds sues for breach of contract despite being told by both humans and an LLM that is exactly what would happen.
Court does not go well for Krafton's legal department. It comes out that after ignoring the sound legal advice of human beings, the CEO went to ChatGPT and asked for a plan. When asked for the logs by the court, Krafton's legal team states they were deleted, thus that it's simply herersay. Judge goes "Oh, that's okay, we'll have our IT folks recover them." Krafton's legal team is astounded that's even possible.
The chat logs are recovered. It comes out that even ChatGPT was in agreement with Krafton's legal department, and only spat out a plan after being asked a second time.
The judge, now thoroughly done with the stupidity of Krafton's CEO at this point, rules in favor of Unknown Worlds. Her ruling doesn't simply undo the scheme, but effectively leaves all control over Subnautica 2's development in the hands of Unknown Worlds, including the early access release date, reducing Krafton to just publishing out of contractual obligation. Krafton must also return all social media platforms for Unknown Worlds and Subnautica 2 to Unknown Worlds' control. Financial damages will be determined at a later date.
Krafton proceeds to violate the court order in less than 72 hours by trying to set an early access release date before returning Unknown Worlds' social media platforms.
Summary: In trying not to look like a pushover, Krafton's CEO now looks like a complete idiot who's going to have to fork over bonuses, plus court-mandated damages, plus whatever comes out of violating the court's orders. Krafton's legal department may as well come to court dressed as clowns after this. I suspect Unknown Worlds might buy the rights to Subnautica back after all this and either relegate Krafton to just publishing or find a different publisher for future games altogether.
btw, Steam is currently having an "ocean fest" where they showcase all the ocean themed games on the store
which they obviously decided to do by complete coincidence and didn't mean to say anything by this or anything 🙂
“bits to use in everyday conversations”
DO NOT DO THIS!!!
If a website has a paywall, like New York Times, DO NOT use the ctrl+A shortcut then the ctrl+c shortcut as fast as you can because then you may accidentally copy the entire article before the paywall comes up. And definitely don't do ctrl+v into the next google doc or whatever you open because then you will accidentally paste the entire article into a google doc or something!!!! I repeat DO NOT do this because it is piracy which is absolutely totally wrong!!!
Also do NOT append "12ft.io/" before a URL ! Typing an URL like this https://12ft.io/<URL> will redirect to a site that would break the display of the page by removing the paywall !
Honestly it's kind of prohibited to mash CTRL+P before some paywall windows can load in to get a PDF of the article. Really shouldn't be done tbh very dangerous🤷🏿♂️ ❌️
It's also really bad to disable JavaScript so it can't unload everything and pull up a blocker before you can read the article.
The other day I told a friend of mine that I never forget to take my ADHD meds because I fucking love my ADHD meds. I'm in my late 30s, I didn't finally get a diagnosis and meds until less than two years ago, and they have changed my entire life.
And he raised his eyebrow at me. We'd been discussing addictive medications a few minutes before, like the Tramadol I finally got from the pain specialist to take once a week or so to give me a break from my chronic pain, so I reassured him that methylpenidate (Ritalin/Concerta) is not addictive (at least not in people with ADHD).
His response? To raise his eyebrow even harder and say "Well it sure SOUNDS like it's addictive!"
And I had to explain to this man - who works in a healthcare related job by the way - that just because medication makes you feel good and helps you, just because you look forward to taking it, that doesn't make it addictive or dangerous. And he wasn't convinced.
The simple fact that I was excited to take a daily pill that has literally changed my life, after decades of fighting to get that medication, made him think I shouldn't be taking it so often. That it must inherently be dangerous.
I'm not even in America, but I'm pretty sure this attitude began there and then spread over here to Europe. This Puritan idea of "if something feels good, you must beware of it. Pleasure is dangerous, it is sinful, it is addiction, it is evil."
I know too many people who subconsciously believe that pleasure = addictive = dangerous = bad. Joy is a slippery slope to hell.
So here is your reminder for today that you don't need to be afraid of feeling good. If something improves your life, use it. Even if it is addictive - learn what that addiction means, whether the addiction is inherently dangerous or not, and whether the benefits outweigh the drawbacks and risks.
My ADHD meds are, in fact, not addictive. But I will take them every day because they make my life orders of magnitude easier. I will enjoy them every time I take them.
My tramadol is addictive. I will still take it. I will keep it on a schedule to avoid becoming addicted, primarily because addiction in this case would mean reduced effectiveness. But I am not afraid of my painkillers. They are life changing.
Take your meds, everyone. Don't let anyone scare you away from doing something that improves your life.
There is something so sinister about the idea that a medication made to improve your life cannot be trusted if it improves your life so much that you like taking it. Bleh.
It puts this weird moral obligation on suffering. Like if you’re actually comfortable with yourself and your treatment you’re somehow failing. That you need to be ashamed somehow that the medication helps you and need to be looking for alternatives.
But you don’t. You found a solution that worked great and then you moved on to something else.
This, btw? THIS is why I'm so vehemently against calling everything an addiction just because it makes you happy, so you do it once a day.
I literally once had someone call me ableist because I said let's not fucking call literally everything an addiction, as if watering down the term to apply to anything that makes you happy isn't a horrific insult to people who really do struggle with addiction or substance abuse disorder. Like, it really makes addiction sound trivial, doesn't it? Addiction is when happy chemical in your brain. Don't look any closer. Don't do any research. Just believe me. This is true because I said so and I'm definitely not manipulating your emotions for any nefarious purposes.
(Sorry for hijacking this post and going on kind of a diatribe, but here we are.)
It is really annoying (and yes, ultimately ableist) that people trivialize addiction down to "you just keep doing it because it makes you happy," because there's one key thing they're either forgetting or intentionally ignoring:
Addiction escalates.
Like, there are a lot of things you can say about addiction, about the harm it causes to the individual and those around them, about the chronic nature, about the cycle of withdrawal and relapse, even about the chemical/psychological/physiological nature of it, but if you need a simple, concrete point, it's the escalation.
If you were truly addicted to your medication, you would be taking it more often than you should and seeking more than you need. (This, btw, is what "drug-seeking behavior" actually means - it's not "people seeking medication to alleviate issues," it's "people seeking medication beyond what is necessary or even healthy." The medical industry, unfortunately, often has a problem with mistaking the former for the latter.)
Taking a medication as prescribed is not addiction, it's treatment compliance. (And as far as I can tell from the ones in medical studies I've transcribed, doctors LOVE when patients are compliant with their treatment.)
Feeling positive about your medication/looking forward to taking your medication is not addictive behavior, it just means that your medication is doing what you want/need it to do. It is, in fact, a GOOD thing to like taking your medication, because it means that you'll keep doing it. It only turns into a bad thing when you take more than you actually need.
Asking your doctor about a dosage increase is also not indicative of addiction, and is also not what I'm talking about when I say "escalation." Many drugs lose efficacy over time, even when taken as prescribed. Sometimes this is just how the drug is, but sometimes it's because something in your life changed - for instance, as you get older, your metabolism slows down, which can change how the drug affects you. Also, some conditions worsen over time or in response to certain events, requiring a higher dose to achieve desirable results - this is called "progression," not "escalation," and is completely expected in many cases.
Lastly, "dependency" is not the same as "addiction." Yes, a chemical dependency can lead to an addiction, but in and of itself, it just describes something that you rely on in order to function in your desired capacity. Somebody who is dependent on dialysis for their health is not addicted to dialysis. Likewise, somebody who is dependent on a medication for their ability to function well is not addicted to said medication. (If you wish for a non-medical comparison, consider this: humans can literally go insane and die from lack of sleep. We are dependent on sleep in order to not just function, but live. We are not addicted to sleep.)
"Oh but when you miss a dose and feel shitty, isn't that a withdrawal symptom? Doesn't that mean you're addicted?" No. See, when people with ADHD are untreated/unmedicated, we have to learn to get used to it and find ways around it. When we are finally treated properly for it, our previous coping mechanisms are no longer necessary, and our tolerance for the negative effects goes down. If we miss a dose, we're not going through a withdrawal, we're experiencing the symptoms of our disorder, only now without the tolerance and coping mechanisms we'd built up during the time when we weren't being treated.
This isn't even touching on medications that inherently come with withdrawal risks regardless of addiction potential (e.g. most classes of anti-depressants, for one). True withdrawal symptoms are a result of a physical/chemical dependency at the biologic level, and again, dependency is not addiction.
tl;dr: loving your medication for doing what it's supposed to do, and being happy to take said medication as prescribed is nowhere near addictive behavior, and anybody who tries to argue otherwise doesn't truly understand what addiction actually is.
you have this superpower! BUT you have this side-effect
is it worth it?
yes!!
the side effect is bad but ITS WORTH IT
meh it's okay
the side effect makes it unusable/not worth it

Listen, fellow trans women, I love you all, but if you think that trans men or transmascs are an oppressor class you need to log the fuck off because you are being brainpoisoned by discourse-mongers. That is a legitimately rocks for brains take
There is a HUUUUUGE gap between "transfems experience a unique intersection of oppressions which are not experienced by transmascs", which is true, "some passing trans men benefit from male privilege", which is true, "trans people are not immune to transphobic rhetoric and this can sometimes take the form of transmascs engaging in transmisogyny", which is true, and "transmascs should be treated as equivalent to cis men because trans men are men and therefore as men they are a danger to trans women" like do you see where the gigantic leap of logic comes in here?
There is something personally offensive to me about accounts that go out of their way to post about transmascs being dangerous or untrustworthy or transmisogynistic when the primary danger to trans women right now is the goddamn United States government. Like we've got people in the white house who would outlaw all HRT if given the opportunity and you're gonna post about trans men?? I don't even mean this in a "we have bigger fish to fry" sort of way I mean this is the sense that building solidarity is one of the most important things you can do when faced with a hostile government and society. It's not just that the claims being made are bullshit and transphobic it's that the whole thing feels actively self-destructive toward creating any kind of community that's of any use to anyone

I appreciate this
useful info, although the tone of this page isss....... kinda eyerolly. "your browser tells everyone WHAT LANGUAGE YOU SPEAK” doesn't hit hard after it already reported my city, and the thing about fingerprinting with my font selection while showing the standard set of windows default fonts is lmao.
in general it really sets off my natural antibodies against spin, the slant is just so thick and heavy. they're using every trick in the book to try and get me feeling some kind of way instead of respecting my ability to form my own opinion based on the facts given.
That's because it's probably made by an AI company gearing up to advertise their shitty new service.
Kinda surreal to see people explain WHY Tumblr is implementing age verification in the UK and Brazil just to see responders argue that it's still all Tumblr's fault for complying. They don't want to imagine that this is anything but a bad UI choice that can be turned around by yelling at social media employees. "What's the government got to do with fascism?", or something like that
Tumblr putting in age verification in places where age verification is now legally required: not much they can do to avoid this. Like, Meta could probably fight it with some chance of success if they wanted to, but Tumblr doesn't have anything like the clout required.
Tumblr moderation aggressively and disproportionately flagging posts by or depicting trans people and people of color as "mature" no matter what the content is? Very much their fault and they should yelled at about it until they are finally browbeaten into fixing it, or the end of time, whichever comes first.

I want you guys to all start making a bigger stink about Tumblr's Age Verification Horseshit.
Like they tried to change Reblogs and people rightfully got up in arms, this is a LOT worse. In order to have access to any sort of thing dubbed mature, and We haveALL seen what they think is mature, Everything from a black and white photo of a black woman's arm, to posts about IUD recalls, to a nude painted by a 17th century artist, to anything involving the word Trans; you have to send your personal information to a third party site that WILL get hacked, and you will be doxxed. And they can say "Oh shit, well it wasn't us who sent your name address and gender identity to Moldovan teenagers, here's a couple extra minutes in the ball pit.
That's bad enough!!!!!!!! But the entire idea of needing permission from state authorities to access anything labeled mature by our friendly AI overlords is some fucking Boll shit. Die Gedenken Sind Frie baby. This is all a reaction to people getting uppity about their lowly lowly rights and is being propped up by the same bad actors tht have made life unlivable. Fuck that shit.
"Well it's only being rolled out in Brazil and UK" Yeah, to start. "Well they're being forced to do this by laws." YOu know it's always really funny when these tech giants (Or whatever you call owning tumblr dot com) get really antsy about laws considering they pick and choose which ones they abide by.
This is a breaking point and it's going to be very interesting to see how we proceed from here.
