Interview with Katie Elkins
1. What was your statement?
Katie believed this project was more of a goal then a statement. Her goal was to see how the materials of the wood would react to being drilled into repeatedly in a concentrated area.
2. What did you DO (materials, process, etc.)?
Materials used: pencil rod, plywood, screws.
Constructed the two boxes from project #1, Katie thought about how she could transform one into a stand for the other, and thought the most dynamic way to do so was to prop box #1 on the corner or box #2. Adding gradients of holes to box #1 and triangles to #2 to act as a puzzle piece for box #1 to slide into. For the stand, Katie wanted to create an illusion, as if the boxes were floating on their own.
3. What artist(s) are you most influenced by that we have seen in class and why?
We talked in class about how lifting up a piece by an inch could change the narrative and how the viewers read the artwork. Katie thought her piece could benefit from this idea, by adding an inch of space beneath her two boxes.
4. Why did you choose to focus on your Box project instead of our Statements project?
Katie thought that her statement project was presented in a very specific way, and to present it in any other way would take away from the meaning of the piece (SAFE ZONE). So in her mind it only made sense to work with the box project.
