I'm not an expert but my understanding is that "tomboy" describes GNC women in general while "butch" was a role in a lesbian subculture in the US with more of a "serious" vibe, and sometimes (not always) they go on testosterone. There seemed to be a bit of a blurry boundary between butch and "transmasc" sometimes.

So for example I am sometimes described as a tomboy because I find gender norms to be a pain and largely don't bother with them, but I'm not a lesbian, have a very different type of aesthetic, and also don't feel particularly attached to "masculinity" (or "femininity" for that matter).

So I get the impression that relative to "tomboy", the description of "butch" would give people a very inaccurate mental image of what I'm about.
