Golden tortoise beetle transforming from gold to red
@gayterenus
When your 24 hour premium skin wears off
Alright, y'all. Bug nerd here. Yes, this is real. This is Charidotella sexpunctata. It’s able change color like this by filling and emptying its elytra (the wing covers) with water. The mirror-like gold effect is caused by it forcing water into separate layers of its elytra, smoothing them out to the point where they actually reflect light. By drawing the water out, the red pigment beneath is exposed. They do this whenever they’re disturbed as a defense mechanism, likely to mimic foul tasting lady beetles.
So, there’s a fun fact.
A spy
They also won’t be targeted by most of the things that do target ladybugs most of the time. Win-win!
I’ve seen this species of tortoise beetle in both gold and red, but had no idea they could change their colors at will!
D&D monsters in wind waker style!
I loooooove that beholder kin!! And for the life of me I can’t remember the name of the last one, but I have a whole new appreciation for it.
some tweets re: chucklefish for those of you who have been out of the loop like i have. many, many artists were exploited and never paid a single cent for their work on starbound.
while stardew is 100% a creation by concernedape and he split with chucklefish last year (which was the game’s former publisher), i think it’s important to know since CF is currently in charge of the switch and mobile ports (though sickhead and secret police are the actual porting teams behind it).
and some stardew specific info from twitter user @magiclueless: “For a case like Stardew Valley's, if you don't want money to go to Chucklefish, buy the PC/PS4/XB1/Vita versions or directly support ConcernedApe by buying his music on Bandcamp.”

Okay, so I know there’s nothing I can do to convince the overall population of Tumblr to not reblog the full contents of picturebooks. But give me a minute to explain why I cringe every time I see them on here.
Picturebooks are usually 32 pages long. That means fair use, at its most generous definition, would allow for maybe four pages tops, and even that’s pushing it. And yet sometimes I see literally every page (except the copyright one- odd, that) in a single post.
I know that people share these books to show how great they are. I share your enthusiasm! But when people can read the entirety of the work while quickly scrolling through tumblr, they don’t value it as highly. They don’t buy the book or get it from their library, because they feel they’ve had the full experience. That means less money to the author and illustrator, as well as to everyone involved in its creation.
And while I recognize that none of us are particularly invested in corporations being successful, and maybe some of you even have the (false) belief that creators are wealthy and can afford to lose the income, there’s something else at stake here.
So often the books I see reproduced on Tumblr are ones that are important. That’s why people share them! They are often by and/or about marginalized people- stories that we really want to see more of. And those are the books that desperately need to make money, so that we get more of them. Because when a publisher is looking to whether they’ll publish more books like that, they don’t look at enthusiasm for the topic. They look at number of books sold. And a huge number of reblogs isn’t contributing to the bottom line of getting more books on the shelves.
So I know that I can’t convince anyone not to make or reblog those posts. But maybe I can convince you, at the very least, if you like those books and think they mean something- request them at your library.
You know what happens when you request a book at your library?
You still don’t have to pay a dime.
The book is purchased, and the author and illustrator and publisher earn money and know that there’s an audience for more books like this
You get to see the book the way it’s MEANT to be seen, with its correct dimensions and proper colorization. As a teen or adult (if you’re on Tumblr, you’re one of those), you are able to pick up on things the intended audience may totally miss, like the skill of the art or how the drama of the page turn propels the story forward.
Picturebooks are amazing for learning about both storytelling and illustrating. If you’re interested in art or writing at all, I highly recommend them.
Other people in your community will also get to enjoy the book, because it’s in your system now, and it’s being circulated.
Your library will know that books about this topic circulate, so will order more, and it will snowball.
Many library systems’ funding is dependent on how often patrons use their services, so you may actually be indirectly helping your library get more money.
You are not breaking my heart.
So I know I can’t convince you to not repost that picturebook (although I would really, really, really encourage you to post, like, three pages- PAGES, not spreads- and a link to its worldcat entry instead!). But I would really appreciate if you do this too.
It costs you nothing but time. It makes a huge difference. You’re helping the community in several different ways. And each successful important book has the chance to lead to many, many more.

Did u ever see that one CG animated show about evolution called The Future is Wild?
I haven’t seen the cartoon series but I feel nostalgia towards the documentary
Other than that I also visited an exhibition once featuring life-sized models created by Wolter Design

Despite having like 10 eyes, some of them fairly complex, they navigate like a roomba through trial and error.
Soft and precious little Undersea Roomba <3
Doing their best <3
He is just babey
just a little creacher <3
Oh the eyes aren’t even to see where they’re going anyway; that’s to tell whether it’s nighttime or daytime, and to tell if some other scary animal swims overhead. Anyway how rad is it that we finally proved these are full-blown arachnids??? It was thought they were “distant cousins” to arachnids in the chelicerata but thanks to modern gene sequencing it turns out they’re as much of an arachnid as a spider or scorpion!
Tuca and Bertie was funny and heartfelt and lovable as fuck, better than almost any other “adult cartoon” I’ve ever seen and yes it does feel suspect that it was canned by a streaming service that wouldn’t have really lost anything by giving it another season. I hope it can “find a new home” like Lisa said she hopes for.
