From Star vs. the Forces of Evil - Fortune Cookies. Before I started scoring this episode, Daron gave me some idea of where Toffee’s story is heading and wanted me to create a theme that could evolve as we learn more about him – something slinky and elusive, with evil underneath. I’ll post that whole sketch once the season is over.

For the first time we meet Toffee, I played the theme very slowly and spaced out. We don’t know who Toffee is yet, and we wanted to tease out some mystery.

I love Ludo’s “wait a second” in this scene.

Hey Star vs. the Forces of Evil fans. How are you surviving the hiatus? You good? Good.

Here’s the first sketch I did of Toffee’s theme, back before he was introduced in Fortune Cookies. I wrote it before I scored the episode, based on some description from Daron. Turns out I wrote something that was way more EVIL than it needed to be (mostly at the end, where sounds like it should underscore a maniacal laugh, which isn’t really Toffee’s thing), so the iterations you hear on TV are more cerebral/sneaky than anything else. But the melody is the same.

Also, we pretty much never get past the first 20-ish seconds of the theme when it plays on TV, because this sketch I wrote is two minutes long, which is like 20% of a typical Star episode. I guess I expected there to be an episode that was 20% Toffee going bat-poop crazy? One can hope.

From Star vs. the Forces of Evil - The Battle for Mewni (Moon the Undaunted).

FINALLY Moon’s backstory. Toffee’s big entrance in his functionally useless but super sexy mesh top. And Moon diving into some dark magic, with Eclipsa’s help, thus making a deal that may come back to bite her decades later.

It was really important in this cue to make clear that this spell Moon is casting, even though it seems necessary and brave at the time, is probably a really bad idea. So the music isn’t particularly heroic or magical, like most magic cues in the show. Even when she succeeds (more or less?), it’s still kinda “oh sh-t.”
