He wakes up in the middle of the night-- the kind of waking up where you don’t mean to, the kind where everything is soft and hazy and a little bit blurry, your eyes not quite focusing on the clock to really know what time it is. He shifts, his weight pressing into the mattress that groans beneath him.
It’s definitely too early for them to be awake-- he can’t find a clock to check, but it’s gotta be around three in the morning or so, because the bus is pitch black and silent. No one’s driving at this time of night.
But he’s awake now, if only slightly, so he blinks up at the ceiling that he can barely see.
The silence is comforting, like a heavy blanket wrapped around him.
No, wait. That’s Tyler.
Josh smiles to himself, the warmth of Tyler’s body on his lulling him back to sleep. An arm flung across his chest, their legs tangled together, Tyler’s breath soft and sweet against his ear.
He lets his head loll to the side and rest cheek-to-cheek with Tyler’s, sleep-sticky skin pressing together. When they wake up, they’ll be sweaty and gross, all knotted up with bodies and sheets, but for now... it’s nice.
Tyler makes a quiet sound in his sleep and presses closer to Josh, if that’s even possible.
Two bodies, intertwined like one. Two heartbeats, beating in perfect time.
He caresses Tyler’s back gently, his fingers careful and rhythmic against the bare skin. God, he wants nothing more than to stay like this forever, wrapped up against Tyler. And that’s what he does-- for now, at least, before the morning sun creeps in through the window and forces them apart again.
Carefully, he lifts his head to plant a kiss on Tyler’s cheek.
“Goodnight, love,” he murmurs, and lets their warm embrace lull him back to sleep.
