2006 Rolf Binder Syrah & Shiraz Review

Just opened a bottle of this wonderful wine yesterday and immediately felt the need to share my thoughts...This wine is the best wine I have tried over the course of the last 2 years at least. Such a gem. This Shiraz is opaque dark purple and opens with a brilliantly perfumed and intense ripe blackberry bouquet with hints of pipe tobacco. On the palate, this wine is full bodied, impeccably balanced, and smooth. The flavor profile is a delicious blackberry. The finish is quite dry and its savory tannins sail on and on for several minutes. This is a wine that would go exceptionally well with a NY strip steak smothered with butter and sautéed mushrooms.

Dinner Horrors

Last night I had dinner at an old friends home. We had salmon and quinoa that I found delightful, except my friend decides to bring out a bottle of Chianti. I just about fell out of my chair. Red wine and fish?! Old friend? Not old enough.

Went to 3 pick-up parties today and came back with 20 bottles of wine.... damnit #FirstWorldProblems

You Down Wit OPP?

And by OPP I mean Other People's Pinot, of course. Had a 2010 Mouton Noir last night w/ some BBQ chicken and it was deeeelish!! From the Willamette Valley region in Oregon where I hope to visit with the wifey sometime soon.

Clear ruby purple in color. Strong rubbery Pinot must on the nose. Silky in the mouth, but not in that over-extracted California way. Dark black cherry, peat, and something almost tarry make up the palate. Finish is lengthy, tannins are (again) on the silky side.

This wine has a lot to offer now, hovering as it does between Burgundy and Sonoma. Old world ethics with new world ethos. It would be interesting to see what it might do after some time, but I'm not sure it has what's needed for the long or even medium haul (which, in all likelihood, is the intent). Fortunately, I have five more bottles and time to find out. Meanwhile, drink what you have within the next two years.

Now they just have to get people who have good taste in wine to shop there...
