Thought experiment:
Let’s say in 20 years, medical science has reached a point where pregnancies can be transferred between people successfully and safely.
If someone cannot safely carry a pregnancy to term, an otherwise healthy fetus but the pregnant person’s life is in danger, should the government be able to “draft” another person to carry that pregnancy to term? Should it be mandated?
(We can even go a step further and say that in order to have sex, legally, you have to register with the government as “Sexually active.” And ONLY people who are “sexual active” registry can be selected to be surrogates. Then, you know, its a risk you signed up for.)
After birth, the child would be given back to the original biological parents, so there would be no expectation of parenting by the “surrogate.”
Think of all the lives you would save. Would it be ethical for the government to mandate a forced pregnancy in this way, why or why not?
