I think one of the mistakes with Kev was to make him Robert's husband. I think that seemed stupid. If he just came as Robert's cell mate for years, who was obsessed with him, almost everything that happened could still have happened. He could have lied to Robert about the money and dying to try to control him, Robert could have cared about him and been scared of what he'll do, felt like he owed him his life etc. There could even have been some kind sexual layer in their relationship. Aaron could still have been jealous and confused and obviously Kev would have hated Aaron.

Kev's character just would make more sense to me that way. Them being married kind of justified his actions in a way too easily, and it wasn't necessary.

Your last point I think is the reason. It was sort of the laziest way to do it. By making him his husband, it gave them a tie not easily broken. It allowed them to get away with not making the relationship as complex or giving a real reason why Robert couldn’t just walk away.

If he’d just been his cell mate or his cell mate he had a sexual relationship with or even just his boyfriend, they would have actually had to give that relationship more depth to explain why Robert had to stay, to explain why he was scared, to explain why he would lie to Aaron about it all.

And they clearly had no interest in doing that. So they went with husband and a legal tie. It meant they could write the rest of it super shallowly.

This is where I totally miss the show's perspective because could've very easily given robert his ptsd and had kev being like he never realised what he was doing to robert and also he's been in prison forever so he's not that good with people's feelings and all that stuff and could've made kev put some effort into redeeming himself despite it all, despite completely backtracking on robert's issues. Like sure you like chris and yeah he's the best thing that happened to ED but bro have some faith in you writers and your show. Even when people like to compare robert with kev but with robert they fucking went all out. They made him ruin million lives and made it so people knew he was horrible and villian before even attempting to redeem him. I'm sure even with robert there was similar case that robron went off and everybody loved ryan but even then they went all out until robert's shooting and after that they started probably what was never in plan and that's why it's such a great arc and robert's such a complex and great character. Atp I don't even know what they're trying to redeem kev for. It's like what they're doing with charity. They could've made her actually go through the baby reveal and everyone hating and then slowing and eventually her winning everyone back but now who knows.....

They just continue to undermine their own stories with terrible twists, an unwillingness to commit to the narrative they began with and really shallow writing that refuses to really utilize the characters, their relationships and their history.

It’s really infuriating.

And I get that coming up with 52 weeks a year of story must be very difficult but so much material is right there for the taking and they’re just like “what if we do this wild, probably mildly offensive, sharp left turn here instead!” And the audience is left hanging and never get proper resolution to anything.

It’s rough.

I got frustrated with people back then because I was like "he can have comedy moments and still be a dark character, look at Ray and Celia!" and then....I was proven very very wrong.

I was very much in the same boat as you at the time. I used to be like oh come on guys have some fun because when it'll turn dark it'll be very dark and I've been waiting for that dark since then........

It’s a weird place to be in because I didn’t hate the initial concept or what I perceived to be the initial concept of the story and so I don’t hate the whole thing or hate every aspect of Kev but I hate so much that it turned into a big nothing joke that I just cannot get behind his return because I expect more of the same and I’m just so preemptively annoyed at them killing of Jimmy and letting Kev of all people comfort Nicola.

There are just so many factors that go into my feelings about him and this whole thing.

The lemon drizzle stupidity happened almost right from the start so we should’ve guessed it was never going to be anything serious. They had all those silly comedy grimaces from Robert too yet in Kev’s first episode Robert looked very uncomfortable around him so they must have changed direction immediately.

I don't know what happened with it all. I would love to know though. I want to understand what goes on in Laura Shaw's head and PowerPoints and that storylining room.

But yeah...that early stuff, really right up until the heart attack and that whole episode, I was really genuinely interested in what they were doing. I still love that whole heart attack episode and those scenes with robron at the end of it.

And then it started getting wishy washy and I was still with it through the vow renewal episode and then less and less confident it was going somewhere and then we got to the prison episode and I was....not impressed. I still thought it could be salvaged with the self stabbing reveal but then they did a whole lot of nothing with that so...

here we are...

Dr. Todd gets run over by Leyla in her pram. There's a weeks long whodunnit as to who set the pram in motion. In the end, it's revealed to have been a particularly strong wind.

forgot to answer this one yesterday...

It could be the 50th Anniversary storm the sequel. Knocks down one tree and pushes a pram down the road at unprecedented speed allowing Leyla to get her first murder under her belt before she'd ever even wear a belt. Can you send a 3 month old to young offenders? Haha.

Originally when we first saw Kev, like his anger issues but also that he cared about Robert. I thought it was such an interesting story they could have told. Robert felt like he ‘owed’ and did enjoy his company him but was terrified. And as Aaron said, Robert isn’t scared of anyone.

But the bit which failed was essentially giving Chris free rein to add bits in. The original plan then went skewed from a control to this half hearted joke. It’s an insult to Roberts character and just shows abuse is not serious if it’s happening to Robert because apparently his lies were just as bad.

Yeah no that's my biggest issue with it too. I was frustrated initially because I wanted the straight ptsd story but I was willing to go with the Kev thing because I had misplaced faith in the show that they were going to do something with it that would still allow Robert to have a serious story and they just didn't do that.

But the initial dynamics were genuinely interesting to me. Not in a shipping way by any means, but I've always been totally fine watching a story of them with someone else play out in general, especially when you know it's going to lead back to robron anyway. But I thought the idea of Kev being this volatile guy with a short fuse that had been forged by the prison system but still had some genuine warmth and even the humor underneath was interesting. I thought the idea of Robert having to manage Kev's anger in prison and out of prison, of him feeling like he owed him for protecting him and was actually quite fond of him even if it wasn't anywhere close to what he felt for Aaron was interesting. The idea that Robert could be genuinely scared of him and his temper but also genuinely care for him was kind of fascinating to me. Also the idea that he might have been a little bit of a smaller, more inward version of himself to Kev's larger than life personality both because of that and because prison and Jez and what not made him want to shrink in on himself to protect himself and how that dynamic worked in prison in a way it didn't work in the outside world. And also how Kev's version of love wasn't really healthy and bordered on obsession but could have been partially caused by him being in prison so long and never having a real relationship or certainly not one with a man.

And then....they just didn't dig deeper into literally any of that and just wasted the prison flashback episode and turned Kev into a comedic character only and didn't pay off any of the above and undermined all of the talk of him being violent and a bomb waiting to go off and all of that. And they wasted the opportunity to give Robert a serious story and focused way too much on Kev and his antics.

And the thing is, if they'd explored all of the things they should have and let Robert have his serious story, let him have feelings about all the things he should have had feelings about, explored what it meant for him to be in prison and in that relationship, then I feel like Kev still could have been redeemable and when he returned, then his character could have gotten more focus because they already would have done the big Robert story. But that's not what happened at all and that sucks.

Also, I feel like Chris talks about his character having all these layers but I think the overuse of the comedic stuff really flattened him into nothing but a one note character and that was also bad.

Like, I am very anti Kev at this point for a lot of reasons, mostly due to an extreme lack of faith in the show writing him, but I was genuinely interested in the story at first when it still actually felt like a story and not like one big joke.

If they don’t even give Robert a chance to have feelings about the whole Kev debacle, what chances do you think someone like Lewis will get about finding out who his father is? 😂#KevdalePartDeux

Like you'd think that because they're going in this direction of Kev coming back for Lewis that Lewis would get to have some feelings about it all. And with Vinny getting to have some feelings apparently, you'd think that Lewis would get that too.

However, I can also very easily see Kev coming back and sucking out all the air in the room and taking over every scene or even Nicola getting more than Lewis if she's still trying to keep Kev from telling him.

I just really have zero faith in this show right now.

But also, as much as I did kind of enjoy the Kev and Lewis scenes the first time around, I have really less than zero interest in seeing this story at the moment after all the rest has happened, and Lewis and Vinny as a couple has just made me irritated by Lewis in general. Plus I'm mad about this Jimmy stuff and have no interest in seeing Kev comfort Nicola after they've unceremoniously killed Jimmy off, you know?

There was a way where Kev's character could have worked, where Robert still would have gotten a legitimate story about it and his time in prison and Kev could have been redeemed through owning his faults and a relationship with Lewis but....they really did not do any of that so I'm already done with it.

I think I can guess the answer but do you think Emmerdale will ever touch on Kev’s lies as abuse? Considering Kev deceived Robert in multiple ways as a means of entrapping him and having sex with him, is that not very dubious consent? I know that they tried to make out Robert’s lies were equal to his, but they really weren’t. If they’re having Vinny point out the similarities between Kev and Paul then surely they could? Or will it just be vague platitudes about temper and anger?

Considering they said that he'd have nothing to do with Robert, I'm pretty sure they're not going to even attempt to draw those parallels. It probably will just be vague things about him having a temper and trying to control it and Vinny seeing similarities to Paul.

I will honestly be shocked if they mention Robert at all in these scenes.

Which is honestly ridiculous. Haha. Like I don't particularly want them to interact at this point but it feels a bit insane to me that he comes back and just has literally nothing to do with Robert, the man he's technically still married to unless they've divorced off screen and just haven't told us because that would mean they'd have to acknowledge Robert and Aaron's engagement again perhaps. Like what?

And again, I don't really want them to interact because they clearly have zero interest in even remotely examining what that relationship was or wasn't outside of Robert chose Aaron and Kev was sad. So like...sure, stay away. But still...that's terrible writing for him to just not interact with him.

Then again, that would also mean Robert would have to leave the farm or something but just...

When they botch a story like they did with Kev, I just sort of wish they'd forget it ever happen and never mention him again, not bring him back and try and pretend it didn't happen.

Caleb's revenge on Joe just randomly happening a year later is so funny. I understand they rapidly finished the Anthony plot because Steph left but she wasn't needed for the Joe part of the story so there is no excuse (exept that Laura didn't care about that story and Sophie probably does)

Remains to be seen what revenge they actually manage to allow him to get. Haha.

God the end of the Anthony story, the end of John, the way the Joe kidney stuff just got largely forgotten about....

Apparently we can't trust Sophie Roper either and Laura Shaw clearly should never be left to her own PowerPoint devices but...

I miss the idea of having one producer, with one vision, and not having all of these weird fragmented stories that don't get any kind of good resolution.
