Happy Fatherās Day to the coolest dad ever. My dad did it all. My favorite memory is of him blasting classic rock in the first court of Hawaiian Gardens Apartments, drinking a beer in a plastic tumbler cup, and doing air guitar all day everyday in the late 1980ās. He wore Leviās and a Hawaiian shirt. He was scared of no one and nothing! I remember all these hoodlum guys telling him āHey, Tom, why donāt you turn that off?ā They wanted to blast rap music. My dad was not having it, he hated rap and country music with a passion, and when Tom Haas wanted to listen to Classic Rock, then he made the neighbors listen as well, like it or not! His reply was always āEff You, you want me to turn it off? Come up and try to turn it off, M Effer!ā And noone ever took Dad up on that offer the entire time we lived there! The apartment manager, Old Man Richard loved my dad and let him have free reign of that courtyard of our apartment complex because when dad blasted rock music outside, there was no trouble, gangsters or drug dealers around, he chased them all away! And people lived my dad, and all the kids could play outside undisturbed when he was outside. My dad had more friends then me or my sister ever had. All races, colors, and ages. He had biker friends, homeless friends, kids would swing by and ask for him, and he would fix their bikes free of charge. Dad liked everyone but the police and the creepy guys that hung out by the playground at Radio Park. Dad left this world 19 years ago at the age if 50, too young but forever missed. He was a true relic of the 1960ās and 1970ās. I know Dad is up in heaven, and probably jamming with Jimmy Hendrix, his favorite guitar player. Happy Fatherās Day, Dad!
