Low Back PAIN - 12 HOURS RELIEF ?

12 hours relief! Are you kidding me? I want to be pain free. I understand that if you're in severe pain 10 minutes of relief is like heaven. But I digress.

Last night I was watching TV (actually surfing with my trusty remote) when I saw a man who was obviously in a lot of pain. He was bent over, holding his lower back with his right hand, agony sketched onto his face , looking to the heavens for help. Low and behold relief came in the form of the pill that was being advertised. Who could have imagined that? Next we see this person swinging a golf club, chest puffed out, hand above his eyes (like a scout looking into the distance) to shield his eyes from the glare of the sun as he follows the flight of the furthest, truest golf shot he ever hit. No doubt the ball will hit the green and roll right into the cup. Next we find our pain free hero laughing as he's tumbling and rolling on his back, as he tosses little children (I'm assuming they're his) in the air.  Finally, he's riding on a horse into the sunset with a beautiful woman riding a horse at his side, both dressed in white, bare foot with pants slightly rolled up  as water from the seashore splashes up, sea gulls are heard as they look at each other longingly. Long shot from the camera as they ride into the sunset they're images become silhouttes against the pink sky. Where do you get a pill like that? I want one! Joking! there is enchanting low music and the sound of waves gently caressing the shore. As I drift away in the euphoric state created by these images I can only faintly hear in the far off distance; when using X you may encounter abnormal liver function, cellulitis, vomitting, nausea, abdominal distention, fainting . . long term effects may include Fibromyalgia, Hypertension, Type 2 Diabetis, and pain. Oh, I'm sorry, you wanted to use this why? Because you're in Pain. How much sense does this make? I have pain, I'm taking x to relieve the pain and a long term effect of X is Pain. Sonds logical to me. How about you? Now here's the kicker. After these beautiful images of a life free from pain they tell you that it only lasts for 12 hours, it's temporay relief. Does that mean to attain the pain free life of my dreams I have to take X every 12 hours? or you could try to see what's causing the pain and then have it corrected. Cause corrected = No Pain.

Low Back Pain is a pain in the neck

My goals for my patients are simple and to the point: immediate relief, a visit to visit approach with measureable improvement each visit, and a plan to prevent the next episode from occurring. These goals have been developed from over 35 years of listening to the patients tell me what they want from chiropractic care. That's what they want, so that's what I provide for them.

Low Back Pain - How do I find a Chirorpactor?

Today was an eye opening experience for me as a Chiropractor. My son needed a Chiropractor, he began having low back pain that was interefering with the quality of his life. He would get home from work and the pain in his back was so bad he couldn't exercise, play tennis . . . all he wanted to do was get off his feet. Oh, I forgot to tell you that the reason I couldn't help him is; he works in California and I'm in New Jersey! Small detail.

What's a parent to do? I know I'll go on the internet and google Chiropractors in his zip code. He had already done that but I wanted to see for myself the information that the local Chiropractors had posted. I was a little bit disappointed with what I had found. I was looking at this information from a different perspectice, not as the doctor but as the patient. I decided to check out what was going on in my zip code, then a few others in differnt states and to my surprise I continued to be disappointed.

I don't want to paint this with to broader stroke, but here's what I found from the majority of the postings i read. I'm sure these doctors are fine Chiropractors and very well meaning but let me ask you if you had neck or back pain would you go to them or keep looking.

Again this is what I found in the majority of postings I read googling Local Chiropractors, Zip code and State. The first box is usually about the services they provide it gives a laundry list of things they do: Chiropractic Herniation Treatment, Chiropractic Lazer Therapy, Chiropractic Traction Therapy, Chiropractic Treatment for Injuries, Chiropractic Decompression Treatment, Emergency Chiropractic Care, Flexion Distraction Therapy, Holistic Chiropractic Care, Massage Therapy, Mobile Chiropractic Care, Orthogonal Chiropractic, Pediatric Chiropractic. Auto Accidents, Personal Injuries, and Applied Kinesiology. There are 15 different services here from 1 posting. On average you'll get 10 more or less.

The second box is usually a description of the office where they will reiterate services provides and then make a goal or mission statement. It says things like; correct the cause of your pain, living pain free for life, rehab and then some statement about quality care.

Again I ask you if you were in pain and decided to see a Chiropractor would this be your choice? Remeber i started out by telling you I was looking for a Chiropractor for my son from the patients point of you. Here's what I want for my son; initially how about a list of the most frequent reasons patient come to this office. I'd like to know that he's in the right ball park. Most importantly I want him to get IMMEDIATE RELIEF! That's why we're calling this meeting. I don't want to see him suffer. Then I'd like him to be seen on a visit to visit basis with measurable improvement at each visit. Not a lifetime treatment plan. Last, a plan to prevent future episodes. These are the same criteria I have for my own patients'. If they're good enough for my son,   they' re good enough for you.

Low back pain - one of the most common reasons people come to a Chiropractor

Who said you can't teach old dogs new tricks? I'm blogging. What a concept. Welcome to my blog.

Nothing in life lasts forever, everything changes. The world as we know it today is far different than the world we new when I began practice in 1976. To grow and be productive we must embrace change and not resist it. The times they are a changing.

Why do people come to see a Chiropractor? Pick me, pick me I know! Of course I know I'm a Chiropractor. Been doing it for a long time. So here it is, drum roll please. People come in with:

Lower back pain

Leg pain

Numbness and tingling down the leg

Sciatica

Knee and foot pain

Neck pain

Shoulder pain

Elbow pain

Numbness and tingling in the arm and hands

Headaches

Carpel Tunnel Syndrome

Fibromyalgia . . .

These are the most common reasons people are referred to me for care. What do they have in common? PAIN! What do they want when they come in for care? In a nutshell; RELIEF! When do they want it? RIGHT NOW!

Sometimes people will call and ask to have osseous interferences to neurologic components corrected inorder to achieve a state of optimum physical, mental, and social well being and not merely the absence of disease and infirmity. Yup, you guessed it. I don't get thoses calls very often. In fact the last time I got a call like that the Chicago Cubs were in the World . . . oh but wait I digress. Back to the most common reasons people are refferred in. They are in pain and the want it relieved right now.

What am I going to do for them? Make an appointment for them 3 weeks from now. Then when they get here I'll make them fill out an 85 page Case History includingHIPPA form, Insurance form, hold harmless form, a form to authorize the signing of a form form, get the idea. Next they'll be put in an examination room and told that the doctor, me, will be in to see you in a moment, 4 1/2 hours later I appear. At which point I will spend oh I don't know, about 6 minutes with them, refer them out for 27 tests and tell them to make another appointment in a month and a half after I've received the results of their tests.

Actually, that's not what I'm going to do. In our office it is the policy to get you in the same day that you call. After a brief case history I will do a consultation with you and then get you examined. The purpose of the examination is to determine if I can help you or if you need to be referred to another doctor. If i can help you i will tell you that explain the treatment and with your consent get started right then. Our goal is to give you immediate pain relief, have significant improvements from visit to vist there after, and then provide you with a plan to prevent further episodes.
