FULL BIOGRAPHY // WANTED CONNECTIONS
tw: car accident/injury
OVERVIEW
Ben grew up in the Mines and his way of getting out (of Iron River) was excelling at things; he became a swimming star, winning championships and joining the U.S. Team across the globe.
In his early twenties, he got into a nasty car accident and got a spinal cord injury, putting an end to his swimming career and granting him a one-way ticket to a wheelchair.
Still, he didn’t wanna go back home, so he put his big boy pants on and went to med school in California. He then got into a residency program in NYC and lived there for many years until now.
He’s back in Iron River to stay closer to his family now that his mom is sick, and he basically shares custody of his 6-year-old niece so he can give his sister a break.
HEADCANONS
Ben should definitely have a sensible car, but try telling him that; transferring into his big, high SUV is probably gonna bust his shoulders, but he’s not about to let it go.
His cat’s favorite place is his lap. As soon as he rolls inside his apartment, it’ll climb on top of his knees and stay there. Forever. And god help the poor soul who tries to have it any other way.
He’s had an opioid problem before, and now he’ll die before taking the pain meds he actually needs. He’ll always work through the pain like the machine (he thinks) he is, grunting and sulking, god forbid anyone mentions anything about it.
Blake’s new favorite hobby is photography, but he thinks he’s never been artistic or creative enough in his life, so the whole thing is like---a secret. But he actually has an authentic style, mostly perspective shots in his analog. He finds the entire experience of taking and developing pictures to be very therapeutic.
He can speak essentially any language if he’s drunk enough. No, seriously. He’ll make do with whatever basic knowledge (he’s a curious boy) he has of it, and that was a pretty badass ability back when he travelled a lot for competition. No can do if he’s sober, though.
His biggest pet peeves are being talked down to and being underestimated. Trust me, if you pull this shit on him, he will make you so uncomfortable you’ll wish you were being punched instead. Beware, he takes great pleasure in telling nosy strangers exactly how he got in a wheelchair, everything from “I just have a massive d*ck” to “I was in a safari once, and there was a drunk elephant inovlved.”
DEVELOPMENT POINTS
Ben wants to bond with his family again, but feels like everyone is still grieving him from before his accident. It’s like he’s a stranger in the house he grew up in, a place with no pictures of him to be found anywhere and a second floor he hasn’t seen in over ten years.
Also, for the first time he’s actually not firing up all engines to get out of Iron River; first with world-class-swimming, then with med school and being a doctor. He’s never before stopped to take a breath and balance actually enjoyable life and activities with whatever he’s doing to survive, he’s always been all in. Now that he has that luxury, he’s a little lost.
His last serious relationship in NYC ended in a sour note after his then girlfriend said he would never be a good dad. That has stuck with him since, so he tries to overcompensate with his niece and prove to himself that he can be a great dad.
